Mass Effect 3 Engineer going to feel more like, well, an engineer?

Hello everyone! :)

Like most people in here I*m a huge Mass Effect fan and I can barely contain my excitement for Mass Effect 3. One thing that have been on my mind as of late though is how the Engineer has been portraid. In Mass Effect 1 I felt more like an Enginner; I could use my electronics and decryption skills to open locks, bypass terminals, increase my shields and repair things. In Mass Effect 2 I felt that the Engineering part of the engineer kinda vanished. Now we fire bolts of plasma and cryo things, which feels more like Boba Fett (which is awesome in itself, don't get me wrong! :)).

Shepard is a combat engineer, that is true, and it's in combat where he shines, but I would like to get a little bit more out of my Engineer than just more attacks. What do you guys think?

One game that got the Engineer right was Dead Space 2, then again, in Dead Space 2 you have to be an engineer, so they could tailor the experience around that. Still, I would love to see the Mass Effect 3 Engineer take a few hints from Isaac Clarke!

So far I know that the Engineer is supposed to have a turret? Kinda neat. Do we know anything else?

Sincerely,

David

.....Like? What are the examples from Dead space that made it more engineer like?

The most interesting thing was "hacking" doors and the like. It looked totally awesome! www.youtube.com/watch

The real combat engineer. Would be hard to make something playable out of that in ME, although the implementation of turrets is a step in the right direction. If we can at least get supreme mastery in demolitions and sabotage it's close enough for me to imagine being the real thing. And one last thing, I want a fearsome beard and an axe too.

Clarke did improvise that plasma cutter at the beginning of Dead Space 2, among other neat feats throughout both games.

Yes. Sabotage and demolitions might help Shepard feel more like an Engineer as well!

Yes, combat engineers do demolitions and field fortifications etc. in modern times, but that's because we haven't access to mini-fabricators with omni-tools and such. Combat engineers in the Mass Effect future should have all kinds tools at their disposal for all kinds of engineering tasks, whether its fabricating parts to repair a vehicle (unlikely in ME3 probably) to field modifications of weapons, hacking or simply bypassing electronic security, and using mass effect technology to improvise strategic fortification on the battlefield, on the fly. Like placing a barrier in a doorway to block access and force enemies into a bottleneck littered with mines and in the line of fire from turrets and such. But yeah, this is probably asking too much...

As long sabotage is NOT about remote disable enemy hand weapons, but actually sabotage something like doors, communication, computers or vehicles or something like that. I just could not stand it, because it's so idiotic. Not gameplay wise, but no enemy would EVER bring weapons in to WAR for they soldier, what enemy can remote make them useless. One of important element of weapons is how reliable they are in real combat situation.

How ever, it would be nice to see more techno-tool based gameplay. Not just everyting so much about combat. I think hacking and bypass was nice, but it was just pure player skill, no any techno tool gameplay was connected to them.

I'm fine with some exclusive hacking that's just for the engineer (a few lockers or containers, or turrets). But demolitions, turrets, sabotage and skills to do with ones own equipment (shield strength, more melee damage perhaps (exoskeleton)). Just give us something to make us engineers! =)

I agree.the Engineer wasnt really one in ME2 the only thing that was close to him was controllign the drone.Things that could rever the Engineer to is original role:
-The ability to place automated defences like drones and turrets(Already done)
-The ability to place area denial mechanisms like mines ranging from anti personell to EMP or barricades
-The ability to hack doors unhacjable to any other class( maybe the Infiltrator as well) but the hacking should be hard and challenging soemthing like the puzzles in Assassins Creed 2 which will require logical thinking and not jsut connecting dots thats too easy
-The ability to interfere with tech. This could range from enhancing(temporarily)an ally's shields to being abel to use unique weapon mods(that require engineering knowledge to use)to re programming enemy automated defences to electronically disabling entire mech squads

Also BTW a good name for the Engineer skill tree upgrade would be Sapper :D

Well I shared base with a battalion of combat engineers and if anything they had more heavy weapons (http://en.wikipedia....ecoilless_rifle) and MGs than us regular grunts. But they were more dig in guys I guess.

they also had mines bridgelayers and tanks converted to bulldozers though, wish the ME3 engineers had those.

Hmmm. I never gave Engineer a chance. I like killing things with big guns and making them float and fly with my mind so I play Vanguard.

Bah I can do that with an Infiltrator and then Snipe them in the face :)

Honestly though i've gotten at least 3 playthroughs with all classes (except soldier... only have 2 with a soldier.... just dont enjoy that class... probably due to the lack of neat powers...)

I hope all the classes get a nifty upgrade come ME3.  Turrets for engineers does sound good, but anything else they'd like to throw the engineers way i'm all for it.  New tech powers would be nice as well.

I think an engineer felt like an engineer in ME2. They got a discount on upgrades which was outside of combat and reduced the amount of planet scanning needed. Possibly in ME3 they could get a bonus on weapon or armour mods. Not just a discount but something along the lines of the Witcher talent "Impregnation" that actually increased the effectiveness of mutagens. Being able to bypass hacking minigames would be a nice difference, doesn't unbalance the class at all but just a conveniance bonus. Or get more credits while hacking certain terminals.

Edit : It would also be pretty cool to have a quest or quests that could be resolved differently for every class out of combat. I'm not sure exactly how this should be done, but maybe in one quest an infiltrator could don a disguise, in another quest an engineer could macgyver up a bomb from some raw materials, an adept could open a door remotely that couldn't be reached etc

not just the engineer... all the classes need to be more unique, pretty much every class had the same ability but a different name in ME2

I have at least one of every class, so I have an Engineer.  None of the classes are bad to play, but it is one of my least favorites.  I wouldn't mind if they spruced it up a little for ME3.

Actually, didn't one of the ME3 guys tweet something about the Engineer being more awesome in ME3?

Personally, I find the engineer class to be one of the most enjoyable to play. I think it is also one of the most overlooked. I just hope they give the class some really unique abilities because the combat drone, while very cool, was also available through Tali or Legion. Conversely, most of the other classes had primary abilities that no other companion character was was capable of using. I, for one, think there is enormous potential for BioWare to create an amazing combat engineer class for ME3.

An AOE power called Tech Mines would be cool. Basically do it like an AOE spell in DA. You toss out a mine laying drone and it seperates into a number of mines that stick to floors and walls. Power evolution could be more mines(larger radius), more power(more damage), and maybe once the drone finishes deploying mines it becomes a combat drone or a kamikaze drone(final power evolution).

Being able to erect shieldwalls would also help. You could evolve health, size, final evolution could be permanent(until another is placed) or one-way shielding(you can fire through it).

Being able to deploy sentry turrets and the stuff the above user posted would be nice. It would make the engineer more engineerish.
