I would say there is a lot of untapped potential in Kaidens story. There are a number of things he talks about that could be further explored.

I never got attached to Kaiden in ME1. Hardly talked to him. But I'm happy to have him back, maybe I'll like him this time. I was afraid Bioware might introduce an entirely new team, yet again. But they're bringing back our former companions. A great move.

Kaidan: I have headaches and I was abused by Turians as a kiddo.

Thats about it.

Kaidan is a decent character. He's kind of like Jacob, only he talks more personally to Shep about his experiences, whereas Jacob just makes small talk. And is slightly anti-social for a while. I've saved him in a few playthroughs, though I prefer Ash.

I liked his story about his time on Gagarin Station. Whether or not you consider him a great character would be a matter of opinion, but I do. I personally found his dialogue to be one among the most mature & level headed in Mass Effect.

Of course he is. Though maybe not as 'unusual' or 'unique' in some ways than other characters in the series, he has a deep sense of loyalty and maturity that I love very much. With his words and actions, he shows that he has much depth. He's sure of who he is, he has integrity...He is without a doubt one of my top favourite Mass Effect characters, and my favourite Mass Effect romance *swoons* :-D.

Deep? He certainly has some insightful comments to make. That's undeniable. Other than that, he felt rather lifeless to me, compared to characters like Wrex or Mordin.

Somehow Kaidan managed to make a story about how he killed his teacher really boring. Even though it sounds mundane in comparison chatting to Ashley about her sisters was more interesting to me.

Yep he tells you quite a deep backstory. I wasn't Kaidan's biggest fan, but after ME2 I realised how good he really is. You learn about his upbringing and his time as a biotic as well as several other personal feelings and experiences he shares

Then you have ME2 characters that are lacklustre in comparison. Like Jacob, any explanation into his biotic background? Nope, all the explanation we get is "I will hit 'em with the good stuff!". Thats one example of course.

Anyway I digress. My point being is that Kaidan is quite a deep character certainly! One the most Bioware have written in the series so far.

I agree with most. Too bad Kaidan didn't have his own mission. The feeling I have of ME1 is that it acted like an introduction to the characters. It was done rather well. I was a bit disappointed when all of a sudden most of the main characters were replaced by another bunch.

I like Kaidan, he doesn't question my orders in front of the rest of the crew, unlike Ashley :\\

Although none of the ME1 characters have the same level of personal conversation as the likes of Alistair or Morrigan from DA:O, Kaidan is a nicely complex character for the Mass Effect series. He had some problems in his past, but as an adult he's grown and learned from them rather than becoming a trauma bunny.  Although marked by his past, he has moved on, allowing his experiences to give him extra perspective rather than jumping to the worst possible conclusions (regardless of how entitled he might have been in said jumping). In fact, it's this holding back, this cool detachment, that characterizes him a lot of the time - he doesn't lose control or become overwrought very easily (though some of the dramatic developments in the game's plot do get to him at times). It's nice to have a squadmate one doesn't have to babysit. Shepard knows s/he can rely on Kaidan to get the job done.

As a male Shep I somehow missed how he BROKE HIS INSTRUCTORS SPINE WITH A BIOTIC PUNCH.

After I heard that story, I liked him a lot more. That's my boy. :D

You see, Ashley has a poetic soul and is relatively good with words. Kaidan is more down to earth and not really imaginitive. Part of his appeal that he can't express himself very well as his Horizon letter shows.

I believe it was a biotic kick - but yes, very badass (albeit uncontrolled, which I think is why the story still haunts Kaidan to some degree years later, even when he's got most of his issues squared away).

Kaidan is a very deep character who I get along with well in my playthroughs. He reminds me a lot of myself with his personality traits. Another plus is that he's possibly the most reasonable and level-headed member of the ME1 squad.

I also loved Carth when playing KOTOR. Very well-developed character.

A large part of both characters and their development is their shared VO. Raphael Sbarge does great work.

I like Kaiden. I didn't use him much to start with, but after a few playthroughs I started to like him. He's good ingame as a squad member, but he's also interesting. His lack of gung-ho attitude is actually a nice change of pace. I kept him alive on my "canon" run, and I think he'll make an interesting Spectre. I'm still interested Ashley too though.

For my Shep he made a damn good second in command, he's got all his emotional baggage battened down and stowed away, he's damned useful as a strong biotic and engineer and doesn't question orders, complain or gob****e too much. Good marine.

Kaidan's one of the few reasonable characters in both games. He's the quiet deep thinker type of character.

Other Bioware characters base their personality on their backstory. Kaidan was a little different. He actually had an opinion on current events. Yeah Kaidan told a few stories but he also had other things to talk about.

What I dislike is that people think "interesting backstory" is synonymous with interesting character. A lot of the dialogue in Bioware games tend to just be me listening to their life stories. Dragon Age was a little different with Wynne and Sten, but in Mass Effect all we really have is Kaidan.

One of the most memorable conversations with Kaidan was when he asked us about the Reapers. He wondered if they look down upon us they same way we look down upon ants. He's a deep thinker, a keen eye for the pretty ladies, and makes reasonable observations to what is happening.

I'm one of the people that actually had a tough time on Virmire. Both Ash and Kaidan were cool. They were really fleshed out and organic as opposed to the ME2 squad (3 talks, loyalty, and sex/bro fist). I originally chose Kaidan out of pragmatism. I was a Solider, he's a Sentinel and an officer. But I liked Ash so much that a made Sentinel playthrough and kept her as the LI.

TL; DR Both Ash and Kaidan are deep and well written.
