No, he's not deep.

Just incredibly whiny.

He'll always be Carth 2.0 to me. Maybe it's a little unfair, because they both have the same voice actor, but a lot of personality traits seemed to cross over as well.

See.....I didn't see any personality traits cross over between the two.  Carth I actually liked and found to be very interesting.  I was feeling for him and felt bad when events unfolded the way they did in KotOR.  Kaidan just came off as flat and unappealing and I found myself not caring at all about him.  So...when it came time to leave someone on Virmire, as much as I didn't like Kaidan, I actually DID like Ash.

Still....all mean jokes and put-downs aside, it still wasn't a choice I liked making.

Kaiden seems to have potential to me. I feel Jacob could take lessions from Kaiden on how to play the "normal" guy on the Normandy but still seem to have personality.

Kaidan's got a great backstory... unfortunately, his main issue is that his presence around Shepard and helping Shep stop the Reapers is unexplained. Wrex, Tali and Garrus signed on because Shep helped them out, Ashley lost her whole unit and wants payback, and Liara's mother is a huge plot-point to explain her presence. But Kaidan? He just happened to be another biotic soldier on board the Normandy. If he and Shepard had been established as good friends with some history, that would have made his loyalty to Shepard much more believe-able. Instead, he just kind of ended up as the fellow soldier who tags along.

I still keep him alive in most playthroughs, but I'm thinking that maybe since he IS the only one without a plot-central reason for being there... -shrug- I like him as the "good friend" personally. Someone trustworthy and reliable and relatable, him being human and all.

Kaidan was handpicked by Anderson, just like Shepard, Pressly, Joker, and the rest of the original crew were.  It would have been interesting to make his backstory somehow connected to the main plot, but why is it *needed*, especially if it strains believability to make everyone have a soap opera-esque connection to the main villain?

Any good soldier who wants to help people would have enough reason to want to take down Saren and the Reapers.

Well, sure it makes sense, but I just felt that Tali and Garrus always fit really well into the plot (and Wrex, almost as much). Kaidan just happens to be the odd one out. I think that's why he kinda gets stuck with the "generic uninteresting human" tag. I don't mind him the way he is; I simply think he and Shepard should've been more familiar with each other than they first appeared.

Mind you, he did deal with Ashley's death not too badly, but from the looks of things ME3 is going to have a lot of loss as a key part of the story.

He didn't have any romantic feelings for Ash though like he obviously has for Shep, whether romanced or not.

Ashley and Kaidan seemed to have gotten close by time of Virmire though. And it's implied that two get together if Shepard don't romance either of them.

I like Kaidan, he seems to try and learn about aliens and thinks a way of trying to make bonds with them.

Unlike Ash. But I like how ash is kinda racist, more conflict.

Not as much as others but he's up there. most of the aliens have a better story in my opinion but he's still cool in his own way

I think he's quite complex. His inner turmoil, his calm demeanor belying an explosive temper we glimpse occasionally. He has the best assessment of other species than any other character: they are all jerks and saints, which is reflected in his own character. I thought it was interesting when he's with femshep he never mentions his chronic ailment, but with manshep he readily admits to having a severe migraine.

Plus he didn't bore me to death reciting poetry.

Nothing better on the romance? I had my doubts on that. Then I can still have no doubts about leaving always Ash alive and more respect for Jacob than him. I don't get why Jacob receives so much hate and Kaidan so much fanboys/girls. Is the romance in comparison? Well at least Jacob little by little develops a will to have an actual friendship with male Shep. I'd like my Shep to spill some drinks with him, Garrus and Wrex on the Citadel. Imagine how awesome would that be. Kaidan...I only remember his story on the academy and the turian instructor and the girl he was supposed to protect. Was there something else?
