I've downloaded two kinds of 1.69 patches, and I get that same message with the boh of them. I have the gold edition. What patch version do I need for the gold edition?

EDIT: I also have another question. Is it possible to play this game in window mode?

Hey sogar
I have just reinstalled NWN1 Gold Edition, and i ran into a similar problem.
I run Windows 7, and when i tried to download the patch, i received the same message.
What i did is right clicked on the file, then ran as admin. And it worked perfectly.

Hope this helps.

Window mode - NWNWiki

Link to patches from the wikia.

Critical rebuild downloads for the final patch (1.69). These are for the English game running under Windows.

Currently running the Platinum edition. After my install from the disk it worked just fine, no crashes and no errors on windows 7. Took me a while to find the patches but I finally found them here. (God I love the Bioware forum community!) I'll let you guys know if it still runs fine after the patch.

Did have one odd issue though...when I started a new game Pavel (that first NPC you meet) called me slow and I realized that my PC was speaking like a cavewoman..."Me not know this" and the like. I don't recall that from the last time I played this game some years ago...I'm not playing as a barbarian either...

This caught me off-guard the first time it happened to me as well, but the "cavespeak" is the result of having an Intelligence score lower than 9.

Yup, realized that when I started my new game and had my intelligence higher. It'd been so long since I played that I forgot to put up the intelligence. When I remembered to do so and started over it was normal again.

Three things;

1)  Diamond is not ready to accept 1.69 until AFTER you run the patch located on the cd/dvd.  There is a separate exe located somewhere on the disk that you must run after installation of the main package.  That will patch Diamond up to a point that the 1.69 critical rebuild will recognize it properly and allow the 1.69 patch to run.

2)  You need to check/follow all the instructions of Win7 to turn off UAC (User Access Control) and run the installation(s) in Administrator mode.

3)  You should specify the installation folder and not allow Win7 to place it in any location other than c:\\Neverwinternights\\NWN.  Otherwise, the rest won't matter.

What Bannor says is true, only thing I would do different is turn off UAC before you even install the game. Also make sure you are using the critical rebuild to patch the game to 1.69 and not one of the patch files that you can download from various sources.

I don't get why all of you always point that one out. On my son's laptop and my Desktop, each with Windows 7 Home premium, I installed NWN in c:\\Program Files (x86)\\NeverwinterNights\\NWN and it works without any hassle.

Just curious.

Primarily because many of the tools for NWN, in your nwn\\utils folder, and just about any plugin type tool as well as 90% or more of the "self-installers" of mods/haks etc on the vault, are looking for that specific folder location.  The nwnupdater no longer really matters if you already have the 1.69 critical rebuild, but the nwnupdater looks for nwn in that location as well.

NWN itself will read the registry to find the location of all the files, but most of the plugins/tools do not and assume c:\\neverwinternights\\nwn as the priimary location for nwn and all of the sub-folders.

So, if you have a successful install in other folders, the game will work, and the toolset might also work from other locations, but if you restore from a backup hd or ramdisk etc, the game will only run if you place it into that original location.  Meaning, not re-instaleld restoration, but from a backup.  As in you lose your computer, and just want to restore nwn without having to go through all the steps to install and patch, you can only do that if the folder structure is based on c:\\neverwinternights\\nwn.  With that type of restoration, the game will work, as patched, without having anything at all in the registry.

In other words, it just makes life much easier, as you don't have to reisntall, then re-patch, and your tools/editors etc for cc don't have to try to figure out where things are located.

I am on my 3rd computer (actually 4th now that I think about it) since I originally installed nwn.  2nd since patch to 1.69 was released.  I have installed nwn exactly twice, the other times it was restored from backup copies of folders.  MUCH faster, and I don't have to worry about patching etc.  I have 3 backups now, 2 on hd's and one on a dvd, So, worst case, I can restore from one of those 3 backups without having to hassle with things.

Anyway, many folks have had various issues with nwn when installed in different locations that seem to get solved by just installing to the location that the original NWN wanted in the first place.

Thank you, Bannor, for your thorough explanation. I think the updater works with the registry entries, too, because on my old PC I had NWN in c:\\programme\\NeverwinterNights\\NWN (German Windows XP, location proposed by installer) and the updater worked - as long as there was something to work with, of course. For third party tools, as I've been on a Linux box for years now, I have to install any add ons manually anyway, so I never realized that installers expect NWN in c:\\NeverwinterNights\\NWN.

Yes, I use the toolset on my Linux box, though it only works through wine, of course. But you have to pay attention on graphics drivers. I have an ATi HD4350 (rather low end, but suits my needs), and the latest driver that gives usable output with the toolset is 11-4 (8.84.1). All newer drivers have a screwed up 3d display in the toolset.
