So... Kaidan outranks Shepard

(Now if Kaidan becomes a Spectre, they'd technically be equals, but he'd still take all orders from Shepard because of 1. Shepard's natural authority, 2. Shepard's greater experience overall and 3. cause only Shepard is a match for the Reapers.)

I always felt a little bad for Kaidan, having a girlfriend who was not only higher ranked, but infinitely more badass than he. I always felt that he must feel a little emasculated by that. So if having a higher rank makes him feel better, than by all means, let him have a higher rank.

Hmm, well there's a very easy way to solve this power struggle. Who can hold their breath the longest in space, you first Kaidan.
Naked Wrestling ???
Plus I think it will be slightly how Shepards relationship is with Anderson and how he advises him but doesn't explicitly tell him what to do.

plus even in mass effect the name commander is just a place holder as shepard himself says technically he is not even in the alliance anymore

End of story. Kaidan is free to leave Normandy at any time, or be relocated to the brig, if he has issues. The universe has been invaded, and Shep will not waste time on insubordinate crew.

If you were smart enough to reinstate his/her status, that is.

They may outrank Shepard, but it's still Shepard's ship.

in the comic I am guessing it was a no on that as the council was saying it had nothing to do with them it will be interesting in the game how they play the trail seeing as spectres are meant to be able to have a free hand on missions which would have given the alliance an easy out on this

If he lives:
If Kaidan is Staff Commander, he already outranks Shepard (Lieutenant Commander).
Too bad he lacks the backbone to actually give Shepard an order.

"You may no longer be Alliance, Shepard, but you are still human." ... Admiral Hackett to Shepard in ME1. The implication here is that a Spectre cannot be beholden to any government. So this would apply to Kaiden or Ashley as well. Shepard human? Not as much since Lazarus.

It's
Ensign
Lieutenant jr
Lieutenant
Lt-Commander
Commander
Captain
Rear Admiral
Vice Admiral
Admiral
Fleet Admiral
Lt Commander is the equivalent of major.
Edit .. Although major is a senior officer rank.
Ah forget about it(Go hide in a corner)
I`m a bit confused right now.
I tough that Admiral was the equivalent of General and Captain the equivalent of Colonel etc. So that would make Commander the equivalent of Major. But in the grand scheme of thing it's inferior?
Who care anyway ... THey're all Chimp.
Or maybe there's no equivalent of Colonel in the navy? That would actually make sense.

There's no Major rank in the navy
Codex:
Systems Alliance: Military Ranks
The Alliance uses a modified version of the ranking system that has been used for hundreds of years. Soldiers are classified into rank-and-file enlisted personal, experienced non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and specially trained officers.
The divide between naval personnel and ground forces ("marines") is small. Ground units are a specialized branch of the fleet, just as fighter squadrons are. This unity of command is imposed by the futility of fighting without control of orbit; without the navy, any army is pointless. The marines, as a matter of pride, maintain some of their traditional rank titles; for example, marines have Privates and Corporals instead of Servicemen.
In ascending order of responsibility, the ranks of the Alliance are:
ENLISTED
Serviceman 3rd class/Private 2nd class
Serviceman 2nd class/Private 1st class
Serviceman 1st class/Corporal
NCOs
Service Chief
Gunnery Chief
Operations Chief
OFFICERS
2nd Lieutenant
1st Lieutenant
Staff Lieutenant
Lieutenant Commander
Staff Commander
Captain/Major
Rear Admiral/General
Admiral
Fleet Admiral
ETA: I see my reply is redundant.
