I am pretty sure if Kaiden tried telling Shep what to do, Shepard would laugh at him and tell him to go clean the toilets on the Normandy.

Latrine Detail is.... not fun. Ask anyone who went through basic.

Shepard has no true rank anymore, Shepard is still called Commander for three reasons.

1:That was the title they had before he/she died
2: Shepard is known across the galaxy as Commander and never changed rank before death.
3: Walters was too lazy to touch this in the game and did not get rid of the Commander title.

And because the name is iconic.

Imagine if everybody started calling you "captain" in ME3 - it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue like commander does does it?

Captain Shepard has more power in it's name.

I'd like it if he got promoted. However, a lot of people have an attachment to 'Commander' and will scream if it is changed.

The Normandy is Shepard's ship though so if you think about it, also if Shepard is being re-instated in the Alliance, no doubt they will give her/him a rank promotion. Also there is the fact that if you didn't reject spectre reinstatement then that also puts you above Kaiden if he lived in your playthrough.

he is a spectre as well, I dont think they will promote shepard after just being court marshalled though. The guy is lucky to be back in the alliance at all really.. Probably the work of admiral hackett there. But he only commands the 5th fleet.. not the alliance, then again most of the alliance politicians and navy for that matter are probably dead since arcturus station is most likely destroyed by me3 considering you have to go by it to get to earth

I've argued that they should have been calling him/her that since Mass Effect 1.

Sort of pointless, since we were given the canon explanation for the Commander title in ME2. Also, Spectre.

Yeah...it pretty much doesn't matter if Kaidan tells my Shep what to do he's gonna get a mocking laugh and a possible mutiny. The ship itself is on Shep's side.

Shepard gets called Captain by the quarians on Tali's loyalty mission and she has an interesting comment on it, but yes, they're the quarians.

It's a stupid canon explanation.  Commander is a rank.  Captain is a title (as well as a rank), a title he earned the second he relieved Anderson of command of the Normandy SR-1.

There's a reason I called the thread "Silly demands and nitpicking" though.

Admiral Hackett undoubtedly outranks Shepard...yet I've never heard him give Shepard one order. Not only that, but he was present during the battle of the citadel, and yet deferred decisions to Shepard.

Shepard supercedes military rank at this point.

Because Shepard is a Spectre, Hackett can only ask not order and the only reason why the fleet listens to Shepard at the battle was because Shepard could let them enter.

Even when/if you arent a Spectre anymore, Hackett still doesnt issue orders to Shepard, he asks.

That...doesnt make sense. Hundreds of human lives are at stake, as well as the entire fleet. Hackett's fleet. Shepard was a Spectre and thus his authority derived from the Citadel Council, which has no direct authority over the Systems Alliance military. If chain of command still applied, with Shepard as Commander...there would have been absolutely no way he could have made the call to sacrifice human lives/ships.

As I said. Shepard supercedes military rank.

Only Kaidan would outrank Shepard, There are still 2 ranks between Shepard and Ashley by ME3

Technically it's Lieutenant Commander Shepard, since as far as we know Shepard was never actually promoted to a full Commander. Thus Kaidan has outranked Shepard since ME2.

Yeah, in the end, Shepard's Spectre status basically supersedes his Alliance rank out of necessity. Spectres answer to the Council, and even then, they have free-reign. Militaries having the ability to order around agents with free reign to do as they please would be a mess. If someone were to pull rank on Shepard, reason would mean that he would have to follow Alliance protocol and essentially forget Spectre protocol. In the end, it would be more advantageous to let him have the freedom granted with being a Spectre and have someone else do the "grunt" work.

Besides, he's a Commander. Sure, he'd be outranked, but it's not like anyone would boss him around and have him get coffee.

Perhaps the game will be all about the wonderful Kaidan's plan to stop the reapers with his trusty lacky, Commander Shepard.

Ok I've gotten the official Game Informer Magazine and it did not state anywhere that Shepard was being Court Martialed for anything. Yes Shepard destroyed that section of the galaxy to stop the Reapers but it does not state anywhere that he/she was being court martialed. In fact it only states that the story picks up where Shepard is in front of a tribunal to answer for that incident alone. No mention of a court martial.

We also do not have any information on what Kaiden's military rank is either. I would like to know where you all are getting this information from.

Sure he is a spectre and doesn't really have to listen to the alliance.. but he is on an alliance ship filled with alliance crew.. So if he ignores them they can just take away his ship and crew and he can be publiclly know as the hitch-hiking loner Spectre lol. Lucky for him the Alliance has bigger concerns right now though.. plus most of them are most likely dead

Practically an unshackled EDI (if she's still around) would be in effective command of the Normandy anyway since she now IS the Normandy for all intents and purposes, also if both Kaidan and Shepard are Spectres the council could place Shepard in command of the council mission to save Earth/Unite the galaxy so at most we might possibly end up with Kaidan formally in command of the Normandy according to Alliance protocol and Shepard commanding the mission and everything else.
It might depending on circumstances be possible that Kaidan would technically be in command until you reach the Citadel and the council just like Captain Anderson was in the first game.
Also if I remember correctly isn't admiral Hackett stationed on the Citadel, if so it's possible that he might also reinstate Shepard or field promote him to captain after the tutorial.

Shepard is a Lieutenant Commander.

Kaidan is identified as a Staff Commander by Captain Anderson during a chat on the Citadel in ME2.

As was said earlier, Kaidan has "outranked" Shepard since then.

Not that it matters, because Spectres are outside the Systems Alliance chain of command.

If you ask Anderson about him in ME2, he says he's now a Staff Commander.

My bad. I sort of assumed that that tribunal equals court martial, for Shep having committed a treason for joining Cerberus.
