What it is:
BioWare’s first ever costume contest showcasing costumes based off of any BioWare game. It is free for all who wish to participate in the contest or be in the audience and watch. Some entries will be individuals; others will be groups with a shared theme. The large stage in the BioWare Base in the Hilton Gaslamp hotel will feature excellent viewing for all in the audience as well as the focal point for costumed entries to show off their costumes.

When & Where:

5:00p.m. Friday, July 22 at the BioWare Base in the atrium of the Hilton Gaslamp hotel. People in costume are advised to arrive before 5:00 pm to allow video recording, photography and setting up of the contest. Any photos or video taken must be for personal, non-profit use only! You are welcome to visit the BioWare base in costume any day during the convention, but the costume contest will only take place Friday Night July 22.

How To Enter:
Anyone is welcome to enter and the contest is open to all who wish to attend. You must be present to take part and present to win any awards or prizes.

Judging:
A panel of guest judges, assembled from BioWare staff and/or special guests will select the costume or costumes they think are best.

BioWare Costume Contest Rules:
1) Costumes must be of original construction, or show significant modification of pre-existing materials. No
costumes are allowed that are purchased or otherwise obtained from a commercial source. It is expected that some
costumes may include as minor elements some purchased items.. This is a show of creativity and craftsmanship, not shopping ability.
2) All costumes must be based on characters from BioWare games or interpretations of costumes from BioWare games. BioWare games include: Shattered Steel, Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights and expansion packs, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: Origins Awakening, Dragon Age II, Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
3) You are welcome (and encouraged) to wear your costume around the Convention center, the BioWare Base or streets of San Diego if you so choose.
4) No liquids, messy substances, or anything that may pose a danger is allowed on stage. No pyrotechnics allowed. Unsheathing of bladed weapons is not allowed without clearance from BioWare Base staff  prior to the costume contest.
5) All costumes must be tasteful and follow all local and state laws.
6) For safety reasons, children under age 13 are not allowed. A Young Fan must have a parent or guardian present with them during the event.
7) Contestants agree to show up to the BioWare Base no later than 5:000pm to allow staff to plan the show, determine entrants, display order and so forth.
8) All entrants allow BioWare/EA to video record and photograph their costumes for non-profit purposes.
9) The BioWare Base staff may reject an entry on the basis of inappropriate or unsafe behavior or content, because the event has reached its limit for entries, or for other reasons. Please keep all costumes based on BioWare games and/or characters.

We will be filming the event and possibly showing it live. So show up in costume, and be prepared to have fun showing off your creativity. :)

I was gonna say just give it to Holly now and save everyone else the trouble, but then I remember that Garrus bloke from a coupla weeks back on youtube.  Can't remember the thread title, but there's definitely competition.

I am not trying to sound smarmy or condescending but I always seriously wondered what drives some adults to dress up as imaginary characters that they a) didn't create, or, B) aren't being monetarily compensated for??

Is it fullfilling some need? Just letting yourself totally geek out? I am a Star Wars/video game fan as much as the next guy and don't feel that compulsion. Just curious... :)

I'm ready to go. Got my Cerberus uniform all dressed and pressed, my weapon is all detailed out, and now I just have to wait.

@Hammer - I do it because it's fun. It could also be that since I couldn't go trick or treating for Halloween (lived out in the boonies) that I never really got to dress up. Either way, I just enjoy doing it. Especially when I get into character. Two years ago I did Sniper from TF2 and had a ton of fun chasing the other TF2 cosplayers, saying, "Boom! Headshot!"

nb4 they turn away a cosplayer for dressing up like Jack because its "inappropriate" even though that's exactly how bioware designed her. =P

Isn't Rana, Samara's face-model supposed to be at this year's SDCC, as Samara?

Ahh the age old question of 'Why do you do it?' the amount of times I've heard that question thrown at me and various other members of the 501st Legion.

Why do I do it?

So many reasons to mention with the obvious main one being for the fun of it, getting to be an iconic character we like, getting to put smiles on peoples faces (specially those whom are having a bad time due to illness or whatever), there are some things money can't buy, a lot of the time, it's that feeling gained from doing events like previously mentioned where if anything I end up being humbled and thankful that I am in good health and any 'worries' I have are insignificant in comparison to what some people are going through and yet I can make them smile just for being dressed up as an 'imaginary character'.

Trust me, money don't mean nothing when it comes to things like that.

There's something wonderfully fulfilling about how people stop saying "She's a girl, she doesn't actually play video games" and start saying, "HOLY CRAP!  COMMANDER SHEPARD!"

It's a ... pride thing.  You build something and people a) recognise it and B) share it with their friends.

I think thats a good point.  I think a lot of 'nerdy' people are shy, and if some one recognizes your costume, its a way of finding some one that you have something in common with, without having to ask.

This Garrus outfit from YouTube?  Guy has some dedication, that's for sure.
