Is it just me, or was the quest line involving Hawke's mother an epic fail?

I did get very mad about this quest, and there's a couple GIANT plot holes in the quest.

1) Aveline can be with the PC. If she is, she sees a man run off. She sees the ring, as well as the bones. She KNOWS there was a murder when she talks to Emerick about it after the fact if she's with you.

That and the fact that I'm sure the Aveline I got to know in my game would NEVER have let this go...

Well seeing how Kirkwall doesn't seem to have night patrols to deal with gang infested streets, I would not put that much faith in Aveline's competence (and yea I know, it's gameplay / story segregation).

In DAO the Human Noble origins is much better about the death of your family. You can talk to everyone and get a feel for the world. The very first time I started it I knew I was going to love DAO and the HN origin proved that feeling right. Your mother is acualy a competent fight and I found myself wanting to stay behind and fight to the death against howe's men. By contrast I never felt sad see the ogre kill my sibling and didn't care about your mothers death( althouth the opening when you found out she was missing and there were white lilies made my stomach turn to stone).
Also did anyone else think the amount of blood quentin spilled going back to his hideout was ridiculuse?

I've seen complaints of the Human Noble Origin that it was too talky, required too much just running around from place to place, and that the action took much too long to get rolling.

But I think learning, in great detail, about Cousland's family, seeing the relationships with mother and father, trading banter with brother and sister-in-law and cook and even old tudor really gave you a sense of what Cousland's life was. These people were his/her people. Cousland's life felt real and complete.

All this payed off when, in one night, the whole world explodes.

We needed as much patience shown to Leandra and Bethany, heck all the inter-character relationships in DA2. I feel like we got the Cliff-Notes version of the game: we get the idea but all the meat has been left out..

The dwarf noble was my favorite. The way her father doted on her, the people adored her, fainted even. Older brother is jerk, but you read his journal and find out he's not so bad. You're becoming a great leader, you learn how important your family is outside of royalty when you go recover the Aeducan shield. I was thinking, "my life is great!" Then the family dynamics go sour and you take a plunge from grace. I actually FELT that.

I REALLY liked Bethany though, the few times I got to talk to her. I did wish there was more with her in the game. Whenever she comes back to help you as a warden was the best part of the game for me. The only other character I liked was Anders, and he all but devestated me, so I was like really? This is what happens? What is even the POINT of getting attached to people in this game.
