I really enjoyed the suicide mission on the first playthrough. I lost a couple of squadmates because I sent Zaeed with the Normandy crew, and seeing Grunt be taken by the seeker swarm was oddly impactful. I thought it was slightly better than ME1's finale, even though the Reaper construct did have me letting out an audible guffaw. The music, the pacing, the speeches, everything felt very well done.

The ending could be Shepard, in a chemical toilet (Think port-a-john) reading the newspaper with a cigar in his teeth - then just fade to black.... and it would STILL be better than fighting a stupid terminator knockoff. If boss fights in ME3 are like that terminator thingy, I am boycotting Bioware and EA forever. There is no excuse for a writer/developer above the mental age of 2 to come up with this trash. Enough ranting - sorry.

I think it will be greatly satisfying to watch the 'omnipitent' machines beg for their lives as we whip them one by one. It might even be fun to re-purpose some of the Reapers to murder Harbinger in a last stand type of deal. After all - they were made of components of races long past extinct - it would be really fun to awaken that part of their souls and have them destroy the old original reapers. Then we program them to self destruct or live out the rest of their existence as protectors and/or holographic entities only.

You know there is going to be that moment in the game where you are staring at your screen, wide-eyed and mouth hanging open, where you are either physically screaming or thinking really hard: "WHAT THE ****?!"

That's how ME3 is going to have a better climax than ME2. They are going to throw Shep and all of his/her friends under the bus and you'll think to yourself: "Now that's what I'm talking about!"

I did that in ME2 with the human reaper, except it was more of a disappointing WTF. I had to hit ESC and take a 20 minute breather.

I hope they turn it around and have an ending more like ME1, which was far less cheesy and way more emotional.

But I would be happy with an ending that didn't have every Reaper killed. That way if they make an MMO, we can still be chasing them down (from the hunters to the hunted).

Mass Effect 2, imo, had the best climax ever in a video game. How can Mass Effect 3 possibly better it?

I thought the ME2 ending was about the worst you can get so anything ME3 does will be better by far.

I think that the ME2 ending would've felt better if the Suicide Mission were far more perilous. Three short sections where you really have to go out of your way for squadmate casualties doesn't cut it.

I wasn't the biggest fan of robo-saren or reapernator, but I felt the last missions in both games were truly epic.

The suicide mission in ME2 is a blast. I especially like the part where you have to stay in the biotic bubble. Plus the feeling of not knowing for sure who will live or die the first time you play it is very visceral.

However, scaling the side of the citadel tower while working my way closer and closer to HUGE Sovereign has to be one of my favorite missions in the franchise so far.

For ME3, I'm rather hoping that the "multiple endings" we're being promised will lead to very different conclusions, which could be possible since they don't need to set anything up for another game. Perhaps one Shepards story ends after a huge fleet battle with Harbinger, whereas a different Shepards story might end with a small squad blowing up Harbinger from inside, etc. etc.

Terminator boss fight was pretty weak sauce, but the whole suicide mission was awesome. Plus the last 30 seconds of ME2 are epic.

I can't wait to see what in store for ME3.

Yeah, ME1's final mission is great. Watching Geth run down those "hallways" after you is so badass. 2nd only to Noveria out of the ME1 missions imo.

Should be quite easy to top ME2s ending. The scope in ME3 will be huge, the whole galaxy is at stake, or maybe it's the whole universe but I suspect that tagline is just hyperbole and a disregard for scientific terminology.

ME1 ending better. It felt like it was meant to be.
Chasing Saren through all those worlds then fight in the end(better if no saren-husk).
ME2 no weight he could have just hailed a cab to collector base in the beginning and be done with it..

It seems like Biowware is sticking with the genetic goo repoduction method. In which case the ending of ME2 was a prettty big reveal into the reapers and their motives. I think the opinion that ME2 was more of a side mission than a conitinuation of the story is due to the ambiguity of the human-reapers purpose but several statements from bioware afterwards seem to confirm it's part of their reproduction method which for me still has a few logic holes in it.

Why must we always compare enemies, visuals, and plots to things outside of the series?  Why can't we just like or dislike it based on its own merits?  I swear, "I don't like it because it looks like X" or "It's a total ripoff of Y's story" are the stupidest reasons to hate on something.  Originality is rarer than diamonds nowadays, and people should realize that when they judge something.  Jesus.

Furthermore, I think both endings thus far have their own pros and cons.  ME1 had a larger scale, but the actual ending post-boss-fight was rather anti-climactic.  ME2 had awesome music and everything up to the boss fight was awesome (like ME1), and everything after the boss fight was chilling.  I think the edge goes to ME1 for buildup (since the entire premise of the setting was buildup for that ending), but I think ME2's ending was better in every other way.  And comparing the human reaper to undead saren is like apples to oranges really.  They're both pretty ridiculous.

Sorry to revive an old post (because it looks like 12 hours is old on this forum), but I just finished ME2 for the first time--and I'm incredibly disappointed by the ending. I found this post by googling "ME2 disappointing ending". As someone quoted above, the entire game sported phenomenal story telling, albeit the main plotline was very short. But ME2 lacked the ultimate aha moment, the true climax if you will. You think the climax of ME1 was the fight with saren? Gameplay-wise, yes.

To me, the climax of ME1 was when you realize that all these things you've become familiar with.. mass relays, the citadel, the keepers--all the interesting but mostly disconnected technologies of the game that you were amazed by initially, but eventually became commonplace (in the same way that they are taken for granted by all the species of the galaxy!)--are integrally related in this grand, recurrent scheme by the reapers. They designed the mass relays for whole civilizations to build along predictable paths? THEY built the citadel?? Brilliant, and chilling. It was like.. HOLY ****! I've been played! Used! And that pissed me off, leading to an emotional, powerful ending. The battle of the citadel was pretty awesome CGI, and very exciting as well. The boss fight? meh. Every game ends in a boss fight, I'm OK with that. Overall though, from beginning to end, ME1 was a masterpiece of a story.

Now back to ME2. What are the key plot developments?
1. Collectors are kidnapping people by the thousands (first mission). OK, why?
2. Collectors are actually protheans (interesting, but poor delivery.. I think it's like a conversation with EDI that you find this out. They really could have made this twist interesting/exciting IMO).
3. They're harvesting humans to build a giant reaper.

There was nothing in the storyline to suggest what they were doing with the humans; so this ending just comes from left-field. Unlike the ME1 ending, where the final minutes of the game unite many mass effect world elements in an interesting, creative, and terrifying way. The ME2 ending is a classic type of storytelling twist reserved for the inane and uncreative. If you've seen 24 (24 season 1 spoiler coming here), the twist that Nina was a bad guy in the 2nd to last episode? Ridiculous, made no sense, and nothing in the show suggested / hinted she could be bad. No motivation, just.. empty surprise. That's what I felt like the ending was. A huge surprise where my aha moment consisted entirely of thinking.. oh. That was what they were doing. A terrible ending to an otherwise extremely impressive game.

I wasn't around here back in ME2 day, but I had the same sentiment. After ME and ME2, what could possibly go so wrong with ME3?

Little did I know...

Let's see if BioWare did the unlikely and does the game justice.
