I'm going to start an Insanity run as Engineer in as soon as I finish up on my Soldier, and I was wondering whether the combat or explosive drone is more useful. I've always liked combat on Legion and Tali on the lower difficulties, but does it just die too quickly on Insanity?
Thanks in advance for the advice!
Combat or Explosive Drone

The only real appeal of explosive drone is the AOE damage. Trouble is, any drone will lock down a single enemy until the drone is killed. So, you've got 4-5 guys coming at you and you cast explosive drone on one. He is locked down, but his buddies keep moving. By the time the drone explodes, there is only one guy in the AOE, therefore the AOE is pointless.
Attack drone only damages a single target, but if he zaps 4 times, he's done more single target damage (120 points) than explosive drone (100 points). The drone fires every 3 seconds, with the first zap being the moment it's cast. That means attack drone only has to stay alive 9 seconds to out-damage explosive drone.

Explosive if you play on higher difficulty, since with the power duration reduced AND bad guys killing it faster, it won't get out it's full quota of shots.

Insanity=explosive drone. For the other difficulties you can try the combat drone, but I still prefer the explosive drone.

Actually, my Engineer had good times on Insanity using the Combat Drone. Especially remarkable during the Arrival DLC, which rules out Squadmembers, my Combat Drone did some nasty damage on its own.
Please keep in mind that the Zap also stuns the target. I had on numerous occasions my Combat drone thin out ranks from behind as it eleminated one mook after another (only works on the weaker enemies obviously). I'll say it once more, the Combat Drone chews through low-level mooks! On Insanity!
Especially if you help it a bit ... then it's going through enemies like a hot knife through butter!

I've only ever played Engineer on Insanity. I did numerous tests on various missions just casting out my drone and staying in cover to see how long it lasts. Either fully upgraded drone will almost always last 4 or more shots, which means Attack Drone wins over Explosive Drone in most situations.
Granted, any enemy armed with the Revenant (Ymir mechs, the turian prison commander, and the Shadow Broker) will kill either drone in a couple of seconds. I've still used Attack Drone to lock down Ymir mechs because the cooldown is so low. All the love for Explosive Drone comes from its AOE, which is irrelevant because the stun zap causes the enemy you targeted to become isolated from his allies. When it explodes, only the original target is in the radius 90% of the time.

Personally, I prefer the Attack Drone, because I don't find the Explosive version to be any more useful on Insanity. However, this is one of those powers where personal preference will prevail over a clear winner in terms of utility, so my suggestion is to try both and see which works better for you.

Depends on how you'd like to cast it.
If you cast it like a Vanguard's Charge (i.e. at the rear/side of enemy positions to flank them) then Attack Drone is better. It can live a very long time if you don't thrust it in the middle of a crowd of 8 enemies, and with 6 Tech Upgrades it does nasty amounts of damage. Killed Scions all by itself for me.
