Thanks

I have had very good luck with Steam. It is nice to know it is coming, but the wait always makes me nervous.

Steam and Valve are slow moving... I imagine it will pop up this week sometime.

I have a preorder in on amazon.com, but I might switch to Steam for day one enjoyment. Not sure. Isn't this game like 20GB?

It is. Normally I have have good speed from Staem and they also sometimes allow a predownload before release. We will not know until it happens though.

Depends on the developer/ publisher there was a debacle with Empire total war where they did not allow preload at the last minute.

20gb is the installed footprint, I would expect the download to be more perhaps 30-40 depending on compression of install, textures etc.

Give me good old retail any day, nothing like the solid feel of a disc in your hand once you have it no download limits or line speed issues, just plug and play Image IPB

Couldn't agree more! While I do use Steam for various games I find having a physical copy an awful lot more convenient.

I've ordered different games through Steam, Impulse and Direct2Drive and never had any problems with any of them. Steam annoys me because they make you have steam running to play any game, but its a pretty small annoyance.

Steam downloads are usually roughly the same size as whatever's on the retail DVD - the 20 GB requirement include a lot of space for saved games, DLC stuff and swapfiles - it's not all data pulled from the disc or digital download install.

Yeah, I'd consider canceling my hardcopy for a Steam version. I'm not down with the D2D, though, or the EA downloads. Steam has earned my loyalty, as they've been very good about listening to their customers on a variety of issues in the past.

I don't know about downloading 20 gigs tho. That'd be a long wait in itself. Still, I'd like to see a Steam version if possible, and would probably buy it above all other versions.

There is a Steam version, it's been confirmed by the devs the deal was finalized last week. It should be available sometime this week. I canceled my D2D preorder for it.

Should be good. If you want a physical copy there are ways to make backup copies in steam. I have had to restore after a system crash. It was very handy, install steam abd restore no long download.

I doubt that, most modable games work perfectly with Steam.  The only thing hard to do with Steam is a mod the effects the exe directly.

This will be available on steam but i dont need a crystal ball to know that it will be insanly overpriced and they will ****up every patch and DLC like they do with almost every game on there.

This is exactly what i meant. ;P
After some years there will be some good mods that changes too much for the steam validation check.
Normaly i also prefer steam games, its a easy way to manage your games and you got access to the latest patches even for old games.

Well, Steam will be fine with official DLC and anything made with the toolset. I guess if it's important to you that anything way radical that requires an exe modification, flame away at Steam. I doubt it's very important to more than a relative handful of gamers, though.

I just preordered through D2D, not familiar with direct downloading games. Whats the advantage of going through Steam?

I use steam a lot too but I have yet to mod a game I have purchased over steam. Not sure its a good idea yet so I'll probably be buying it from the shops. But given that most stores keep PC games under the counter these days and NOT on the shelves, I am moving more and more towards giving my money to companies like steam who at least let me see what they are selling. So far the service has been excellent with the 10 steam games I currently own.

Based on the Character Creator it seems that Dragon Age: Origins uses a launcher. And based on my experience with Fallout 3 (which also uses a launcher) the requirement to have Steam running is likely on the launcher executable. So you can bypass that need by callign the game executable directly.

For instance, take the Character Creator. When you start it up you get this launcher with the mage character, the elvish song background music, and four buttons, right? Now instead of running that go into your "Dragon Age Origins Character Creator\\bin_ship" directory and run "DAOCharacterCreator.exe", which starts up the 'game' directly without launcher. It seems exceedingly likely that the full game has a similar executable to launch the game.

Of course there are no guarantees at this point. It might be that you have to start the game through the launcher and can't start it directly. Or it could be that Steam puts the requirement on both executables (which they didn't for Fallout 3, but you never know). But it looks quite possible that you might be able to run a Steam-bought Dragon Age: Origins without having Steam running this way.

I guess we'll see in time. ^_^

I think I will get the CE Hard Copy of the game over Steam. Mainly because I can get a metal case, leather map, and other things.

The biggest download I've done from Steam was The Last Remnant, coming in at about 15 gigs. I started it in midafternoon and it was ready to run when I woke up the next morning. As long as Steam's servers don't get bogged down, I don't think it'll be too bad.

I haven't decided whether to get the Steam version or a hard copy...it depends on if I decide I want extra collector's edition stuff or not.
