Did you have any problems canceling from D2D and did they give you a refund?nisallik wrote...
Should be some time this week, I canceled my D2D pre-order in hoping Steam has preload options. ;p
I would like to cancel mine as well.

I'm big into having nice shiny hard copies so I'll be getting the collector's edition myself...

Oh, so does Warden's Keep come free with the game when you get it through Steam?relentlessimp wrote...
I'd rather get the Steam copy (if they allow pre-loading) so I don't have to buy Warden's Keep separately. But if there's issues with modding, I'll probably wind up grabbing a hard copy and shelling out some additional for Warden's Keep.

warden's keep comes free with the Digital version of the Collector's Edition, or the Digital Deluxe edition as they're calling it. You get warden's keep free with it to compensate for the lack of the physical benefits of a CE.

Oh ok, cool. I would still rather have a physical copy, but I guess if the map/case isn't important to you this is a better deal

No shipping, no tax, and not having to deal with places like Gamestop.QuanziZ wrote...
Out of curiosity, why would you rather get it through Steam then a hard copy? Are there advantages to Steam other then the social network?

I also don't need anymore boxes, they just end up on the floor all over the room anyway.
Hoping pre-loading will be available too.

Hmmm, but I preordered a physical copy straight through EA's website, and the shipping was free... don't remember if there were taxes, but probably...
What is pre-loading?

Pre-loading means you download the vast majority of the data before release so you only have to download a small portion to unlock the whole thing on release day. It cuts down on release day server load and prevents nerdrage from waiting for multiple gigs to download.
EA and amzaon are tax-free; any retailers that have physical stores in your jurisdiction must add sales tax, even if you order online.
I like steam because I dislike dealing with physical media since I tend to travel and move a lot. You can dowload your game and burn it yourself with Steam if you wish to as well. I also have an intense dislike for games retailers and their shenanigans, and it's just easier to download than go out of my way to deal with a physical pre-order.

Ah ok, that makes sense.

Well, in addition to liking a physical copy, I also tend to change computers frequently or use more then one. Does Steam let you install on multiple computers like a disc does?

Yes it does. You can log into the steam app on any computer, sign in, download/install from disc and play away. Save games don't transfer, though.

I think the primary attraction of steam for me are these.
1) No disk that can crack when putting it in or out of the case.
2) No arguements with companies like take 2 over whether disks can break that way or not.
3) No need to put the disk in the drive to play the game.
4) DRM tends to be more flexible via steam and lets face it DRM is here to stay.
5) The internet linkage side of things makes accessing information about a game dead easy. Steam even has its own forums for each game and they are busy too.
6) 24/7 service, need to wait for the shops to open.
7) I can see new releases easily, watch videos, get reviews all via steam.
8) Can download the game multiple times if need be, no need to keep it stored locally.
Steam is not a windows games live affair, it delivers what gamers want to see and allows us to make decisions about games we buy. Its a cool system and has come a long way since the halflife 2 days.
The way the stores/shops are today with their love for consoles, it will not be long before PC games are all sold this way.
Also I prefer steam over Direct to drive, its a cleaner or complete system and tempts me to buy more games all the time. I rather enjoy the steam experience to be honest. Direct to drive always feels like a pirate site to me and trying to find out if it will allow me to download a game more than once should i do a reinstall has proven impossible, the information is hard to find so I am assuming they expect the customer to make a backup on to DVD or something.
So im back to square 1 with corrupt or broken dvds with direct to drive.
I see the day fast approaching when a decision to buy a game or not will be dependant on whether its available by steam or not. Which may upset the regional publishers who refuse to allow steam to sell the games in specific regions as EA once did until recently.
This is a growing storm thats going to hit publishers as hard when it hits because regional middlemen will not be needed.

Usuauly they impliment some sort of DRM system with a 3 install limit, sometimes thats per month, sometimes not. It usually says in the games info window when you buy it what sort of system in used. So far all protection has been complete transparant for me, no problems at all.QuanziZ wrote...
One thing I wonder about is how they prevent pirating with a system where you can download onto any machine. I mean, couldn't I technically buy the game once, then install it on as many friend's computers as I want using my login info? They could have a system that doesn't let anyone play as long as someone else is logged into that same account, but even that is more convenient then if you're trying to share a CD of a game (unless you download a no-CD crack).
And definitely no problems with my DVD player not reading the disk because their isnt one hehe.

I am going to stick with my physical copy that I have on pre-order with Amazon for this game rather than make a Steam purchase. 20 gb is just too much of a download for me.
