Well, according to this thread, the official word on preload is that there is not yet an official word.

Personally, I'm not going to buy my steam copy until they confirm preload.. my connection being what it is, I'd be waiting to play an extra week if I started downloading on Nov 3.  As much as I loathe the thought of elbowing through the crowds at the mall, it's preferable to having to wait even longer than I already have.

Steam preload usually starts off 3-4 days before the release. However, it is possible that Valve may make an exception since DAO weighs 20gb.

20 GB!
****, I guess it makes sense, but for some reason I didn't even think about it. I almost used up my monthly bandwidth, now do I wait for Novemeber 6th, or do I download it anyway and pay extra fees...:? [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/pinched.png[/smilie]

Hell, I'm just happy that we GET a pre-load!  Now when I get home from work on the 3rd, I can jump right into the game.  Now, I just wish that I had gotten the e-mails that were sent out regarding characters uploaded to the character creation thing...

I started nabbing it on pre-load before coming to work and it was moving at a pretty brisk pace, considering. At the rate it was going, it should be done by morning.

so when can we start playing the preload? 12:00 in the morning eastern time, or mountain time, or pacific?
cause if it is set to release eastern time, thats really 9:00 pm for me ... so i might just play from then till midnight vs. staying up really late to just get that little taste.

There is the issue of the missing manual that always comes up with digital releases via the net.

They tend to release PDF files instead but PDF is a format designed for printing not reading and those who download are more likely to prefer an online manual than a manual that has to printed out or zoomed in to in order to be read.

I think companies are missing an opportunity by not providing online manuals on their website along side the usual game support these days. Websites are alive, they grow, they reflect the readers, manuals are static and unchangable.

An online manual could include forum tips as they appear, a paper manual cannot, an online manual can include work around between patches, a paper manual might not and the owner of the copyright can always use the manual page to make sure its customer is aware of what ever information that want them to know about be it a new patch or a up and coming game.

I think online manuals will appear sooner or later when the companies realize what they are missing but until then we at stuck with a highly unsuitable PDF file format for things like steam.

I think it's a bad idea. You assume that everyone has access to the internet full time. That's not always the case. Having a PDF as a local copy is a great alternative. An off-line HTML solution is possible too, but that's hard to print.

I can see where your coming from and it is true PDF files where designed for printing and thus best for that, but it is terrible for reading if you do not intend to print it out (enter eco argument here) and we should not assume everybody has an internet link full time YET, I agree.

But nor should we assume everybody wants to see oil used up making disks or trees cut down to print manuals on or be forced to take a trip in to town on some dirty old bus just ask if a game has been released and found out they do not stock it because theres not enough room on the selves (GAME UK) for PC games became their shop prioritizes console games.

So just as you say we should not assume everybody has a full time internet connect, neither should we assume every big city has a computer game store that sells a wide selection of PC games because in my city, that stopped being true 10 years ago. More and more I have found my self forced to turn to the net to download or order games because consoles have taken over the high street.

I first noticed this happening when I asked for Mechwarrior 4 Black Knight and they said they did not have it only to find it was hidden under the counter. It was never put on the shelf, it remained under the counter for years.

Its not that the PC games do not sell or that they are not being made, its just companies like game see consoles are more saleable than pc games for some reason. Even though theres zillion consoles out now it seems and all of them demand their games get sold.

I'll probably never buy another game on Steam. I've been checking constantly with no luck, and Steam telling me the game won't even unlock until 14 hours after I could have picked the game up locally. After reading this, I found out I had to restart Steam to get the preload option. I did that, the option is now available, but it told me their servers are too busy, and I have to wait a few hours.

Had I preordered from WallMart, I could be picking the game up in 11 hours. Now I might not even be able to begin the download before then. Even if I get it downloaded, Steams says it won't unlock for another 26 hours. I used Steam because I assumed I'd have it quicker. I am not a happy customer.

US customers (Im from the UK btw) will be getting it unlocked tonight, probably in 10 hours actually. Which happens to the amount of time it took me to download it from steam. So its still possible for you to download the game and unlock it in time. Assuming your in the US and have a good download speed.

Unless something has changed recently Steam and D2D will not unlock there games until 1PM EST, Impulse and Gamersgate a little earlier due to their locations.

I managed to get the download to start, and despite Steam saying their servers were busy, I got a pretty steady 600-700kbps and am now done downloading. I'm still quite annoyed at the unlock time considering I could have just picked it up from Wallmart 13 hours earlier than I'll be able to have it now, even though it's already installed on my computer. I can't even listen to the sound track or look at the wallpapers that came with the deluxe edition until then.

I've learned my lesson though, and will now just use Steam for what I had used it for in the past. Buying old games and games from smaller developers for cheap. I'll never pre-order a game I am excited about from them. I made the same mistake with Amazon's "release day delivery" with WotLK, and had to just listen to all my friends tell me how awesome the game was while I waited a very long ~16 hours for mine to show up.

All this new technology and new services to distribute software, and it seems the fastest, and arguably best, way is still to just go down to the store and buy it.

I am kind of old as far as the general video game community is concerned :/

From what I have seen though, the RPG comunity tends to be older, and we've been playing them many years before anyone could have dreamed of something like Steam.
