If you're a S&S you want nature damage (desdemona) and items that boost your nature damage. Otherwise give it to Aveline.

But if you don't have them already and don't want to go to an older save to buy them, I suppose you just need to consider setting up Merrill to use cold spells. Since you're playing on casual I think your electricity spells should work still but focus more on cold.

Anyway, here's a strategy:
1. Run straight up the stairs dodging the Arishok etc
2. Kill the saarebas before they can start their electricity balls of death

Now there's two ways to do it:
3. Focus on the arishok with all party members (varric- brand, merrill- hex, aveline - assault etc)
4. Or kill off all the enemies then focus on the arishok

If you detail where exactly you're having problems we can probably provide more specific advice :)

Thankyou for the help its much appreciated
i must admit although I am an experienced gamer i am very new to these type of games
im afraid i do not know what S&S means
I do not want to go to an older save realy
i have tried your tactics several times but my party is just dying very quickly
i only have three health potions
but even if i had a lot of health potions i dont think it would help due to the speed at which hawke and the partys are dying
again your help is appreciated as this has been driving me mad, iv been trying it about 50 times
and never get close.

I believe S&S mean Sword and Sheild Warrior. Or S&B Sword and Board Warrior.

I have trouble with that fight myself so I don't have any advice. Except I would have 25 elfroot health potions there. Well what I do is attack one of the warriors on the bottom and then pick off warriors until a Sarabas comes down the ramp then I try to kill it but this isn't a very successful strategy.

You could honestly kill him easily with just Merrill or Varric. All his attacks are dodgeable. Dodge, shoot, shoot, dodge, shoot, shoot, etc.

Level 14 is really, really low for the end of Act 2. Most people *enter* act 2 at 14.

As mentioned above you'd almost have to TRY to be that low of level at this point. Its kinda hard to give advice without things like what is killing you, or what the biggest problem is.

One issue is you don't have a single mage with healing spells.
What spells does Merrill have. She has access to the 2 best CC spells (Crowd Control spells) in Horror and Petrify. These would help immensely with keeping hard enemies off of your squishy companions.

Too bad you didn't choose to duel him. He gets stuck in the door and the pillar a lot, and you can just keep shooting him until he dies....Last three times we fought he got stuck. Horns can be a big issue.

I have actually defeated the group battle without a Mage with heal. The last time I made sure my party had good electrical resistance, used dog to off-tank, and killed the Sarabases ASAP.

Resistance is key if you don't have huge DPS (damage per second), and doesn't appear that your party does.

In the group I always find it best to strip away the mobs and then hammer away at the Arishok. The main thing is to stop him (petrify being the best) and unloading on him. You want to to work him over with your ranged characters and try and stay away with your warrior because of the damage he does. The only other key to to move anyone out of the way when he charges.

One trouble is you don't have a dual wield rogue to go around picking people off while the warriors hack at the big bads. I'd use Merrill for that, then, trying to do away with Saarebas first and then the others. And if you're having a really hard time, keep pausing to flip through your party and make sure nobody's standing next to the Arishok (who doesn't want to be) or next to a ball of lightning. It makes for an irritating battle to be pausing all the time, but it could keep you alive.

If you have a mage with you take control of them and hammer the area with AOE spells. I find this rips through groups of pretty much anything other than shades. If you dont have a mage, Bianca might do the job you.

To defeat the Arishok, hit and move, I found getting behind him very effective, and if your health gets low and your potions are on cool down, run around one of the pillars. He'll chase you round and round and round.

I found that battle nearly impossible, till I learned a really good hint.  Set your ranged Rogues (ie Varric, Sabastian) in front of the doors and tell them to hold position.  If you are playing a Mage (which I was with my first playthrough) you can also stay by the door and just 'bring the rain'.....rain of fire from the heavens that is!  Use ALL your AoE attacks in as many different places as possible to make sure you're just littering the battle field with all kinds uh heck.  If you're playing a Warrior.... I like to use Attacks like "Assault" and the like... something that packs alotta punch and clears several targets at once.  (Not sure about the Rogue, have yet to play a Rogue myself).

I found at times it was very hand to 'pause n' play' so I could issue orders to other characters scattered around the room, or take control of one in particular if they were getting mauled.   But keeping your 'Rangers" at the door is the BIGGEST help!     There's a video on youtube that depicts exactly this, if you want to have a visual reference.... I found that really helpful, after getting my tail kicked the first 5x

Anyways, hope that helps!
