Alright people, come on. Seriously now. Ashley is not that bad.

Nobody complained like this when they revealed Jacob. He didn't wear a full suit of armor.
Nobody's complaining about Liara. She doesn't have on any more armor than Ashley.
Nobody complained about Thane either. Where was his armor at?

So why Ashley? Her outfit isn't even that bad. It's not like she's dressed like Miranda. She has Mordin-esque shoulder pads on, and it's not like she's wearing a miniskirt. It's part of the top. And people complaining about the thigh-highs? Come on. Would you rather see her wearing regular shoes and having nothing but tight black latex between her heels and her skirt? I doubt that would help preserve her image as a female soldier any more than what she has on now.

And on top of all of that, Casey confirmed that she has an alternate outfit that's a suit of armor and a helmet. If you don't like the "catsuit" then put something else on her. Problem solved.

I'd just like to note that judging a woman's personality purely based on the way she looks would be considered by many to be quite sexist.

This isn't how women in games are dressing up and making themselves look. That's just impossible because they're fictional - they can't develop sentience and choose their clothes and looks.
It's how the people who design them are dressing them up. The decisions are theirs, and all too often sexist views of women can sway them to create rediculous outfits, such as those in ME2.
Boobie belt, ultra V-neck, and a wedgie-catsuit that also emphasizes a cameltoe.
Jacob's lack of crotch plate and ultramanspandex seems like a weak attempt at the illusion of equal sexual misrepresentation. But even if that were the case... do you imagine that would make it any better to treat both men and women as nothing but ****** material?

I keep thinking Vega's arms are short like a t-rex everytime I see that image but he's really just balling them up. Gives me a giggle everytime.

Ashley's armor? I see skirt, leggings and long stripper boots. Me no likey.

Vega's posture cracks me up. He looks he's saying "I'm so mad! Dang you!!!" You just know he's about to stamp his foot.

I did draw it, but for something else. I just thought it be funny to post in here as a "new Ashley outfit design".

I disagree with you. First, on your assessment that Liara's outfit is excessively sexual - I don't think the color contrast really made me think that. Maybe it did for you, but I, and I am sure many other guys, would just see it as a purple/red outfit and nothing more.

More importantly, I disagree with your assessment that male combat outfits don't emphasize their physical/sexual masculinity. Ways of expressing sexual attraction in male characters are not nearly as obvious as for women but they are almost certainly present in so many games. The reason men don't complain about their consistent depiction in media as hypermasculine, handsome heroes with epic shoulders is that they generally enjoy being able to take on such roles. Guys don't want to play as 45 year old Joe with graying hair and a slight beer belly.

I must establish that what is physically attractive for women cannot just be assumed as the same for men. Just making a man really scantily clad isn't necessarily going to make him more attractive because for the average woman, intangible factors such as prestige, personality, and power matter a lot more than just raw physical appearance.

For one, practically every male character has an ideal figure - narrow waist, broad shoulders, and often, their armor emphasizes or exaggerates the size of their shoulders while minimizing the waist to give a "V-shaped" appearance. This is why Jacob has "armor" on his shoulders and Shepard's ME3 armor is like this:

Image IPB

There is no good reason for his shoulderplates to be bulging out like that and plated up so much, if not to emphasize his masculinity. Compare that to the armor on his waist/torso, which is rather minimized, yet far more important. In the military you are taught to aim at center of mass, and issued body armor places the most protection on the torso. It's where your vital organs are - not your shoulders, and is thus far more deserving of heavy protection.

Heck, a lot of infantry aren't even issued shoulder armor.

Realistically, shoulder armor like that would impair movement significantly, not to mention to extra weight added. There is a video of Holly Conrad testing out her Shepard outfit and she comments about how she cannot move her arms that easily.

Ashley is a pre-established character who has actually expressed ridicule over the idea of wearing light armor.

Check iakus' signature if you see them posting... it's got the full quote about how she'd take "nice solid armor and a big gun" over anything any day.

Besides, Jacob's catsuit has plenty of complaints. His lack of crotch plate is just godawful, for one thing.
At least Thane's DLC converts his catsuit in to a suit of light armor. Still waiting on Jacob...

You know, it's funny - I could have sworn there were other things about Mass Effect 3 besides Ashely's outfit. I mean, really now - debate about defeating the Reapers, RPG vs. Shooters, choice outcomes...all the stuff we could be talking about, and this is the #1 topic on the forum?

All those threads get shutdown or runned  into the ground..ive seen alot of those threads get turned into a huge who can shi7 bigger match...likly theres no smell factor for the internet

This topic is such a fireball because in truth, it's a political question in disguise. The debate going on here is really a proxy battle in the larger context of feminism, its evolution, and how it addresses women in media.

Feminism I must add, has many variants, and not all feminists are on the same page when it comes to things like Ashley's outfit.

I'd just like to note that judging a woman's personality purely based on the way she looks would be considered by many to be quite sexist.

You know mate, thats what makes me laugh the most!
People who think they know what they're talking about, yet are totally missing the point and cause more offence in the process.

ON TOPIC: They are Ash's casual clothes, NOT HER ARMOUR!

Oh , like them all except Vega, he looks like a tw@

I do not think Jack's lack of clothing was meant to emphasize her sex appeal. Her tattoos, lack of hair, and lack of clothing highlight her anti-social and rebellious nature more than anything else. She defies social norms and takes on a decidedly anti-feminine appearance with her shaved head, baggy pants, and tattoos-for-clothes.

It seems to me that we're going back to the ME1 style of having casual cloths on the Normandy and Armour when out and about.

I think Bioware are starting to head in the right direction. Especially with removable helmets (specifically the ability to toggle them off only during conversation scenes. I always found it a bit rude that Shepard wouldn't remove a face obscuring helmet during conversations). It seems Bioware is addressing just about every grievance I had with appearance in Mass Effect.

In saying that the only thing that really bugged me was Miranda's catsuit. If it was only for use on the Normandy then I could have lived with that, considering Mass Effects tendancy toward the figure hugging outfit, but they released dlc that put her in armour so if they stick with that its all good.

I think the appreances in the OP's origonal post are good. The only thing I would change are Vega's eye patch and Liara's head thing. Unless she's became a justicar, which would be a bit random. I don't think that Ash's will be what she'll wear in battle. Her armour is as distinctive and recodnisable as Shepards N7 armour, so I don't see them making any daft decisions in regard to that.

As for the weapons my only greivance is the lack of N7 assault rifle, but just because that isn't included in the CE doesnt mean it won't be in the game, so again I'm not that worried about them leaving it out of the game.

Anyway this post is getting a bit on the long side so i'll leave it there.
