If you don't trust the developers when they are so clear in their public announcements, then you won't trust them when they show screenshots or video either.

I don't know which public announcements you could be talking about. Maybe it's the ones where they say things like "it will have some form of tactical overhead camera." And then it doesn't.

Now, I noticed a few times that EPIC GAMES' character Anya have been posted on these forums as a "why-couldn't-Ash-be-more-like-this" template.

First off, let me say that I am VERY impressed with how Epic handles the personal appearance of their female characters. Like many of the Ash doubters, I was convinced that Gears 3's women would be highly sexualized. I was wrong.

It is, however, very important to note the difference between the kind of games we're talking about here.

Gears of War has the very audience that Bioware is interested in grabbing. Shooter fans. I do NOT have any problem with this, but it is the truth.

Part of this is because Gears of War is strictly a shooter. Its great for casual play. However, the other big part of this is multiplayer, which is more of a social gathering. ME doesn't have this. It is an RPG without MP (thank god), and as such, like most SP only games, will suffer from it (necessary evil). Couple this with LIVE's vast popularity --bolstered by the 360s price, and Halo&CODs popularizing of the "social shooter" genre-- and you have a recipe for success.

Bioware doesn't get this luxury. Now, I think that both teams make stellar games, but BW's games appeal to a more refined (if that's the right word) audience. Wanna spend 40 hours crafting your own story? Play a BW game. Wanna spend 10 hours playing a more casual and violent shooter? Play an Epic game.

The point is, this only solidifies why BW has to some times make what I call "mask character models". Miranda's big breasts, Shepard's gravelly face, and an alien on the cover of ME2 are there not to wink knowingly at fans, but to attract the most valuable and risky audience of all: new consumers with no idea of what ME is.

If Ash is in a silly pose on the ME3 cover in tight armor, it's not because the developers and marketers particularly idealize women. It's because they fully recognize the harsh reality that boys love video games. And no matter how mature one guy can be, there always be an urge to take a second glance at the cover with boobs than the cover with just a hero and a planet.

Now, a girl walking into the video game section at Target might buy a game. But, as a producer, you have to accept that the boy absolutely will.

Gears has their audience, and come September, that audience will come flooding in, brining not only fans, but millions of eager newcomers. They can make Anya look practical on the box art, posters, hell even a damn porno if they wanted. They don't need to worry about scraping up anyone. That's the power of casual games, when you can have guns without boobs, and estimate no valuable fluctuations in sales.

It is also important to note that Halo, Gears, and Metroid are iconic, and have reached a level of public popularity that ME simply hasn't--being an RPG. Don't get me wrong, ME is a huge franchise with a huge amount of popularity. But it is a strictly SP experience, compared to Halo and Gears, which are both giants in the "Social Shooter" genre. This means that it can't quite create the circulating popularity that LIVE's two biggest hitters can. As such, no matter what the femNPC's model, Gears and Halo (and Metroid) can get away with overdressing any character they want. They have their audience!

ME doesn't get that luxury. If they use a female character on the cover, its not because they don't like women, but because they need the sex appeal that Gears/Halo/etc doesn't need!

Because Gears of War is a vapid generic action fest that is insanely popular specifically because it appeals to the lowest common denominator?

I don't mean to imply that people shouldn't enjoy Gears of War. But I had sincerely hoped that we were shooting for something with  a little more depth than that in ME.

The comments I'm talking about seemed to have a tone of irony. Everyone assumed that the women in Gears to appeal to the "lowest common denominator", would be clothed in chainmail bikinis, and high whale tail thongs. Instead, the women are very well proportioned and heavily armored. People feel that Bioware took the opposite route, and are still convinced that Casey's comment "Ash in ARMOR" = "Ash in a thong". I literally do not see any connection between armor and thong. I just don't see it, and I am starting to think that anyone who thinks that femArmor = thong is a troll.

That's fantastic,  could use some arm and head protection, but it looks great.

I think her waist could use a little more armor as well. Real armor should prioritize protection of the entire torso, especially the chest and abdomen, as well as the head and neck. The arms and legs should be the most lightly armored areas.

Well, I will say again as I said in the last thread that anyone that thinks the armor in the game exists for any reason other than to look cool is only fooling themselves. Even the lore and execution within the game does very very little to suggest that armor actually acomplishes anything at all.

Which is why, for the most part, I don't really care what the characters wear or don't wear so long as it maintains some for of consistency with the way the ME universe is supposed to work.

I think it's more that the somewhat hilarious outfit Ash was wearing in the picture evoked similar issues people have with the way that Bioware represents women in general. The Malibu Boomstick Barbie look is by far not the worst thing Bioware has done outfit-wise, but it's certainly an example of prioritizing sexualization over what someone going into combat in general and Ash in particular would actually wear.

Her waist looks fine to me,  looks like it's covered with about as much as the rest but I could be misinterpeting what is and isn't armor.

Women have a different skeletal system, so it makes sense that the waste would be tighter.

I'm not sure why some of you are making a big deal out of this while on the other hand demainding that bioware provide s/s romances...

If Ashley's a Spectre now, then there's nothing wrong with her adopting a look that commands more attention than a soldier. Plus, if Shepard romanced her, she likely feels more like a woman than she did before and also would not be wearing armor during the hearing.

It's like people forgot that Shepard and Anderson weren't wearing armor in the demo either...

I'm not bothered by Ash's appearance - she's definitely tough, but she's always worn a mountain of makeup on her face, so I can't say I'm surprised.

Personally, I think it might be a good idea to sort out Vega's Jersey Shore do and his trash-can-with-limbs physique...

I think they should make him even more douchie,  give him some "Cool guy tips" a nice spray tan and have him walk around on the normandy shirtless with his lips constantly puckered.

Uh, I'm pretty sure women don't have to wear tight leather to look like women. And I'm not entirely sure that that particular outfit would be the best bet for "courtroom hearing" attire.

Can't understand all the whining about Ashleys' look, it is obviously just a jacket. And for a jacket it is kind of bulky. Fits her like a glove IMO.

infact in the demo anderson and shepards do not even have shields since, you know, had no time to gear up

You know,  this is when that Ero guy was around...

Seriously,  do you actually think Shepard's "Heat sink" is so glorious that he's going to screw Ashley back into being a little girl looking to please her new surrogate father.  Women don't work that way.  I fear for any woman who ever ends up dating you.

If I can't see the indentation of her nipples on the front of her uniform, she is not really a woman. :P

Wait, people on BSN are praising Gears of War for something?

I agree, GoW3 looks like it will portray female combatants in a convincing way, its just that many on this forum used to use GoW almost as an insult.
