I am 27 years old and my brother is 14. I am trying to see how Mature is this game and to see if he will be able to play it. My parents and I started letting my brother play a few mature games but it strongly depends on how mature is it. For example we let him play Assassin's Creed (no swearing, no over-the-top gore, no strong sexual content). He also could play Metal Gear Solid 4 and he plays a bit of Call of Duty. We also let him play Fable but I told him he can't get married haha. On the other hand, we do NOT let him play Grand Theft Auto, Killzone, the WItcher or similar games. (Swearing every other word, and very strong sexual content in The Witcher especially).

Therefore, I am trying to see how bad is this game? I know there is lots of blood and it stays on the armor but it doesn't seem from the trailers that there is any over-the-top gore especially against humans. Also, the graphics are not as realistic as other games so it makes it better. Also, killing darkspaws is not as bad I guess. How about swearing? I haven't seen anything in the trailers. There is talk of ale and drinking but that's fine. And finally, how nude and sexual are the romance scenes? Does the game show a lot of it or is implied and then the screen just fades or camera is obscured?

Also, are there any settings that can tone down blood?

Keep in mind that if we let him play this game he will be supervised. So he will not be just sitting at home alone playing this thing. I will also be playing the game so if I see something I will make him skip it or not let him play.

He is really into fantasy games and RPGs and he reads a lot of fantasy novels so I really want him to play this game. Looks like the story is top notch.

Thanks for all the input.

Maybe someone from Bioware can comment on this as they know the game in and out.

As you know there is a lot of blood, fountains of it spurting out of every cut you make. There might be decapitations and such but I'm not sure. From what I've seen, there's no swearing. The sexual content also only seems to be in underwear, there is also homosexuality involved.

I think you should wait a few days after the game comes back and ask this question again to get a better answer.

Alot of people are mentioning there is alot of blood and gore in this game, an example would be the finishing moves where you use a sword or whatever to chop the enemies head off.

There is blood against humans aswell, atleast what i could see. I heard the only way to tone down blood is the amount that gets on your armor, not the amount that comes out of enemies as you kill them.

Personally, I'd in the very least try the game out extensively before even considering letting a 14 year old kid even near the pc with Dragon Age on it. And then only under supervision.

Nope. You can only choose if you want the blood to stick on your armour, but you can't tone down the amount of blood that'll come out of a tiny rat (which has the same amount of blood as a dragon it seems). And as you might have seen already, there's alot of blood.

Probably not very mature, there might be some light probing on the subject of the nature of evil and the position of faith in everyday lives of ordinary people and the consequences of bigotry/extremism.

But mostly it'll be some light nudity, senseless violence, pointless juvenile humor and swearing that would fail to shock my grandmother.

Yeah, i don't think this is the game for him. How mature is he? i dont think theres anything particulary disturbing in this game, the gores the real issue, and if your supervising then the sex scenes are optional and can easily be skipped or avoided, there also tastefully done theres no full frontal nudity or anything.

Until some kid goes bananas and Fox News picks up on the fact that the kid had played DA, and start anew their anti bioware crusade.

And then I have to start going around on various forums, blogs news sites etc and LOL at Fox News and make fun of their pathetic attempts at trying to hard to look like they give a hoot.

Well, I don't have any first hand experience with the game yet but the rating is mature for a reason, I checked the games rating and it says

Blood

Intense violence

Language

Partial Nudity

Sexual Content

so I'd say No.

Thanks for this link. That's a really good explanation of what's inside the game. I am glad sexuality goes to black screen and there is no nudity. Kissing and hugging is fine.

I am a little worried about slashing a throat of a merchant....

I might have to finish this game and then decide if he can play.

I've wondered what exactly Partial Nudity actually means.  Sounds like a marketing gimmick to me.

Partial nudity could mean ANYTHING honestly, you could call being in your underwear "partial nudity"

We also think that kids in this country are a bit too sheltered and the parents do not talk and supervise them. Is the kid supposed to play E and T games until he turns 17 or 18 and then all these M games are unleashed on him? Or not play outside without supervision because he might hurt himself? Common, that's part of growing up.

I played Mortal Kombat, Diablo etc. when I was a kid and my parents always knew what I was doing and they talked and educated me so that I was not oblivious to the outside world but knew what was right and wrong.

That is why we are trying to slowly let him play a bit more mature games as he is not interested Jak & Dexter anymore and he is starting to look for new games.

Well I wouldn't say the "partial nudity" would be the worst thing. Likely the fountains of blood and violence would be the thing I'd say was too much. At 13 kids are pretty impressionable, not that I'd expect your little brother to strap on a sword and start whacking people in the head after playing DA:O. But if I had any say in such a situation I would tell him to wait at least a couple of years.

Even wearing a t-shirt could be I guess...
But I've seen screenshots of a full-naked (well, I couldn't see her bottom half) woman, with just her hair covering her breasts. I think that (+ the underwear shots) are meant by the 'partial nudity'.

My dad didn't mind too much what i did, i was never childish enougth to ever think any of it was real.

By the age of 14 i think i could watch and play what i wanted, i don't ever remember being particulary shocked or having any desire to do any of the things i saw. I suppose it's just left me being a bit surprised when someone has these concerns for their kid, or brother ect.

I said I am concrned about over-the-top gore and extensive sexual content.

So he can watch Lord of the Rings but not Saw or Halloween.

He can watch PG-13 chick flicks with kissing and "sexual content" but not porn.

Get it ?

I say let the kid play it, people coddle children too much these days, trying to protect them from the scareh blood, long as he isn't Schizophrenic or something it shouldn't turn him into an axe wielding psycho.

Plus it's a fantasy game, it's unrealistic in every possible way.

COD is much more realistic and depicts actual events.

Leave the guy for deciding which is good for this brother and what's not. All he asked was how mature the game really was. Just answer that, or say nothing.

Judging from trailers and previous game, the sexual content in the game is probably going to be pretty tasteful, if that's the right word for it. Sensual, and only hints that there's sex going on. You ever played Mass Effect? The sex scene in that game was really well made, and I don't think Dragon Age will do a whole lot more- I just think the whole SEXXX AND VIOOLLENCEEEE MARRILLYN MANSSOONN thing they had going for quite some time was to attract a different audience.

I'd let him play it, since there's not a whole lot violence for the sake of violence going on. It's a bloody world for sure, but it's not gory and super over the top. If you let him play Assassins Creed, I don't think Dragon Age should be any problems either. And man! Aren't you a mean person to maybe keep your brother from playing the sweetest RPG in a long time, eh? ;)

Interesting topic though. I mean, why are you so afraid of ****** when there's heads chopped off, blood all over the place and things that are a lot more unpleasant around?
