If we buy the retail of Mass Effect 3 do we get signed up for Origins? If so I'm going to pass on Mass Effect 3. Can anyone let me know, this is pretty important in my decision to buy the game.

What do you mean "signed up" for Origins?

If you have an EA account, you are already "signed up" for Origin, as you can log into the server with it. But no one is making you download the client, so. No?

I mean is it boxed into the origins client. For example if I buy a retail copy of Shogun 2 it needs a Steam account and thus the client. Now if I buy ME3 will I be forced to use the origins client?

Buy the Steam version then. I'm sure it'll be "Origin-proof". Though, I cannot guarantee anything beyond the basic edition if it's not on Origin.

I've read ME3 will only be avaialble digitally on Origin, so no Steam version.

I don't think we know yet if EA will force a Steam-like program on us. We'll see from BF 3 I suppose.

edit : I know what you mean OP, like some games that require Steam to be installed, even to play a SP game. And I stand by the "We don't know yet".

My understanding is this is true for the deluxe mega whatever edition. Nothing has been confirmed for the regular edition yet.

EA is pushing their own digital distribution system/DRM with Origin; logically that means they wouldn't put their new games on Steam - the main competition for Origin.
If ME2 will be available on steam, then it's likely that will happen until way after it's release date.

To the OP: we simply don't know yet what the DRM scheme for the retail version of ME3 is going to be.

I agree it is unlikely. What I speculate is irrelevant to what is actually confirmed, though.

That makes sense. Steam is still a huge source of income and it's not as if Origin is new, it just recently got a name change.

Oh well if it does come with forced Origins client I'm gone. Guess I'll have to wait and see, personally I'm expecting to be disappointing. It doesn't make sense for them to put it on Steam. Hell I would settle for retail not being on either platform if it meant I didn't have to use Origins.

Thanks for the help guys.

If ME3 is not included/sold through Steam, then E/A can blow it out their backsides.

I'll not be buying the last version, if they force peeps to only buy through their online system.

Not to mention STEAL the name for their own gains!!!! I will not utter the name, in this context!!

What'd be so bad in installing a 30mb program on your computer?

The usual complaints against any online based DRM and a DRM that requires an additional program can be levied against Origin.
But personally I'd primarily go with that you have to activate the game online, with no guarantee that the server for it will still be there in a couple of years. That and the fact that you have to be connected to the internet, everytime you want to access your singleplayer game (note that I've searched around to see if Origin has something resembling steam's offline mode and I could not find any evidence to suggest it does)..

Oh and the kicker is offcourse that this is something only paying customers have to suffer through. Someone that pirates the game will not have this DRM, nor will he or she have to worry about whether or not the activation server is still around and/or available. And for emphasis in case anyone from EA/BioWare is reading this: deliberately ensuring that the pirated version is superior to the legit version is lunacy and an affront to common sense.

I bought all their games, I bought all their DLC, I bought all their novels, I bought all their comics, but I think I'll pass up on buying mass effect 3 since it origin exclusive, I find steam more easy to use and generally better, and you know, there are other way of obtaining games on PC.

On my last post, I mean all mass effect related things, I don't like bioware other games.

There's an article on the PC Gamer website saying that "Mass Effect 3 Deluxe Edition" is exclusive to Origin www.pcgamer.com/2011/07/08/mass-effect-3-deluxe-edition-exclusive-to-origin-adds-guns-outfits-and-a-robot-dog/

I'm confused, what if I buy the retail, *not digital* version? Do I still have to use Origin to get all the extra stuff??

I've pre-ordered the N7 edition at gamestop. I'd better not have to be connected to the internet to access content I frakkin paid for. I'm ordinarily signed in to XBL when playing, but if my internet connection goes down and I want to play ME3 I should be able to use what I've paid for.

It seems that some of the individuals posting on that page have reading comprehension problems. They think that the digital deluxe version contains items that are not available in the retail boxed collector's edition which is not the case.

Reading really is fundamental.

My question is: assuming the bonus weapons and so on are not on the game disk but must be downloaded, can I download them from the Bioware Social Network (like for Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age 1 & 2 DLC) or do I have to download it from Origins. I apologize for having reading comprehension problems :-)

I'm assuming the standard edition will still be released on steam, and will hopefully not require me to have origin installed to play. Otherwise ME3 went from "PC preorder immediately" to "maybe rent on the xbox" for me

It's hard to imagine anyone in Europe, North America or Australia may still experience problems with permanent internet connection.

Hard to imagine, but it happens. Sudden connection interruptions are quite annoying.

Since this has been bumped I thought I would post this.  It seems EA has released a list of digital retailers where you can buy Battlefield 3.  I think you can guess what I am about to say next, yep Steam is not on this list so it looks like Battlefield 3 will not be available via steam.  I also find it curious WHY EA has released this list, to my knowledge we have never had a situation where a publisher releases info on where you can buy a game digitally.

Now if they are treating steam this way with  Battlefield I find it hard to believe they are going to release Mass Effect 3 on steam either.  In short PC gamers should be prepared to either buy it retail or from another DD source because it is pretty clear EA are trying to sink steam.
