Awhile back (on XP) I got to the underdark and one character I needed to talk
to just never showed up. I upgraded to Windows 7 and installed again,
and I couldnt initiate dialogue with the sewage golem (very first lvl).
I reinstalled again and this time when I hit tab the chests, doors,
items on the ground, and hidden compartments dont glow like they are
supposed to.
Ive already tried downloading and installing the latest patch but it said it was already installed, tried again and this time went through with no improvment. I was told to try running it as Admin or with Windows XP SP3 Compatibility turned on but when I did that my save games arent there for me to load. I was also told to try and assign tab to another key but it wouldnt let me unselect the tab key and when I selected another key it didnt let me choose what that key would even do.
Can someone please help me?
Everytime I install baldurs gate 2 I run into problems

First thing that's essential when installing Baldur's Gate on Windows 7 is install it outside of the Program Files folder. Choose something like C:\\Games\\Baldur's Gate II.
Secondly, if you have the 4-in-1 box set, you need the patch and make sure you have the proper language version. But if you downloaded Gog.com, it's already patch and patching it again would mess things up.
Installing should be done as an admin, with UAC (User Account Control - or whatever it's called in Windows 7, can't check now, I'm writing from my XP computer) turned OFF.
That's the steps you'll need to take to have succes installing under Windows 7. If you're still running into problems, post again and tell if your game is modded or unmodded. And check if there's any other active programs while you're playing that make use of the TAB key. AFAIK, you can't assign another key to TAB-highlighting in BG.

Also, which version of BG2 do you have? Do you have Throne of Bhaal?
I've done a little digging and fount the patches for BG1 and BG2 here:
http://www.blackwyrm...net/patches.php
Be careful as SOI said to download the correct patch for your game. If you game has M on T on it, then you'll need to download the US patch, I think? If you game has an ELSPA and 15+ on it, then you'll need to download the international patch, if it is a BBFC mark, then you'll need the UK patch.
The save games in Windows 7 for older games like BG2 will appear in some virtuall folders, I think? As I don't have Windows 7, I've read this somewhere on the net, I think. There should be a tab or folder called x86? or something like that...

It seems to be working pretty decently right now (doing so much I cant remember what I did)
1. If it starts messing up again Ill make sure to move my save files, uninstall and install again in a folder like you7 mentioned. One thing to bring up, and Idk if this means anything or not, its not in the Program Files folder anyway, its in Program Files (x86) if that makes any kind of difference.
2. Its not the 4 in 1, its the original 4 disc SoA and 5th disc ToB
3. For the TAB key I did some more searching and found out its something for ToB, not SoA so I installed ToB and thats working fine now
As for mods, it currently is modded but I had these issues before and after installing any mods but Ive played this game for a VERY long time so I cant just keep going through it in stock mode ya know?
aries, like I said for SOI, if it starts screwing up again Ill install again in a better place and try it and use the patches you gave me if needed.
Thanks for the responses guys

Ok It immediately started screwing up so Im putting in the folder you suggested.
Question, where can I get my save files from so I can transfer them to the new location and where would I put them at?

Nevermind, I found my way around everything. So far so good on everything, took everyones advice from here and VF and as of this point the game is running perfectly even with some mods installed, Im hoping to add more mods without messing something up, anyway, thanks a lot

To view virtual files you'll have to turn ON the 'show hidden files and features option.'
Glad you got it working
Happy gaming

I'd suggest installing the expansion, Throne of Bhaal, if you haven't done so already.
There are some mods out there which I haven't tried myself, I'm sad to say. But many people seem to like the BG fix pack (or tweak pack), there also an unofficial patch if I'm not mistaken. There's also a fix pack that restores some content and dialogues cut from the original game. Then there's Big World, or something like that. Many people, I've noticed also like easytutu...

As I never have played BG1 or BG2 with mods other than the tweak packs, I'm sorry I can't help you with this. Sorry again
- However, there are websites for mods out there like sorcerers.net or spellhold studios where you can learn more
