So wait the Protheans did not leave "timecapsules" behind for us to find.

They did and look at the good it has done so far. The Council does not believe Shepard. There ere artifacts found on Eden Prime, Virmire, a VI on Ilos, the Rachni Queen on Virmire knew of the Reapers, the Thorian on Feros knew about them, a random artifact on a random world that also had an artifact...

In ME2 there was an artifact at the arecheological dig the Blue Suns took over, EDI has DNA scans that prove Protheans were repurposed and changed into the Collectors.... and still no one believes us. Thats enough evidence to choke an Elcor with.

Also remember that we cant directly communicate with future species.... the translators only work for currently known laguages in the galaxy. So we would also have to leave behind Video montages. Unless somehow we could leave EDI behind... I am sure she would be able to learn new languages quickly like the Vi on Ilos.

I agree that the possible ending being discussed should be implemented.... but its not the one I am shooting for on either Paragon or Renegade Shep. I just find it depressing that you would be able to replay ME1, ME2, and ME3 and basically pretend it is ME4, ME5, and ME6.... just substitute your own races in for all the already extinct ones.

@Marstor5 - What is a B5? =]

@Omega4RelayResident: Perhaps you missed my last post on the previous page.We can communicate directly with a future species. Here's how:

Side Quest : Time Capsule - Part 3

There is a Cerberus Daily News Report that speaks of an unknown alien race that has managed to find a way to become virtually ageless and retain their personalities:

08/11/2010 - Alien AI-Controlled Ship Makes Contact in Salarian Space

“Alarms rang throughout the salarian system of Antilin yesterday when an alien ship bearing a strong AI signature triggered fears of a geth attack. Renko Turwin, Director of Near-Orbital Security, explained:

"When evidence of powerful AI heuristics was detected onboard, our security forces thought it was the vanguard of a geth invasion. However,we consulted quarian scientific advisors who assured us that the signals
failed to match any known geth signature." According to Turwin, the biggest surprise came next: "The ship's intelligence then communicated with us. It asked us to calculate the value of Pi to the first quadrillion digits. Some 20 questions followed after that, all of them beyond our realm of expertise. We're currently awaiting advice from
outside consultants before proceeding. As yet, the ship matches no known alien species."”

It is later discovered that it houses an entire community of a sentient alien species.Who has managed to find a way to cheat death, retain their personalities - mind will and emotions:

08/19/2010 - MIT Exo-Biologist Claims Astonishing Antilin "Ghost Ship" Discovery

“The scientific community is abuzz today after the latest report from MIT exo-biologist Jordan Detweiler was filed last night from the Antilin System, where he's currently investigating a mysterious "ghost ship."
Claiming a breakthrough, Detweiler writes, "What I've discovered is nothing short of astonishing: This so-called derelict ship isn't derelict at all. It appears that an alien race has downloaded its consciousness to a massive array of quantum computers on board the vessel. It's my belief these aliens now reside entirely in a virtual
world and have been there for at least 8,000 years." Detweiler estimates the population of the virtual world numbers close to one billion individuals.

He explains: "The ship's AI is something of a caretaker to these people, or even a god depending on how you look at it. More importantly, the AI is now requesting our help. It says a power failure is imminent and threatens the entire virtual civilization."

The Reaction:

08/21/2010 - Opinions Mixed After Discovery of "Ghost Ship" Virtual Civilization

“Opinions were plentiful this week after MIT's Jordan Detweiler stunned the scientific world when he revealed the existence of a virtual alien civilization residing in a derelict "ghost ship". Niran Patalung, a Buddhist scholar at the Center for Religious Studies in Bangkok, said, "I'm struck by the parallels to ancient human beliefs in
reincarnation.Clearly, life does not end for these aliens when they 'die.' Their souls, if you will, simply re-inhabit other virtual personalities and continue living." Thomas Copeland, spokesman for an Earth-based atheist
group, disagreed: "That's true until you pull the plug. Then what? All these 'souls' just wink out, that's what. Those who would latch onto this incident as proof of some higher level of existence are simply projecting their own wishful thinking onto digital noise." Mr. Patalung replied: "One man's noise is another man's music. Perhaps in his next life, Mr. Copeland will be less tone-deaf."

The Decision:

08/27/2010 - Alien "Ghost Ship" Saga Ends Under Veil of Secrecy

“The saga of the alien "ghost ship" has come to a surprising end. Earlier today, reports surfaced that the Citadel Council was prepared to rule against saving the ship, fearing its AI system was sophisticated enough
to pose a "security threat of unknown dimensions." In response, chief scientist Jordan Detweiler inserted himself into the virtual alien world to warn its citizens of their civilization's imminent end. He returned one minute later -- apparently equal to half a year within the accelerated timeline of the alien world -- bringing a treaty offer from
its inhabitants. At that point, details turn sketchy. One inside source claims the virtual aliens offered scientific advancements "far beyond anything we have" in return for assistance. A veil of secrecy was immediately erected, with Citadel intelligence agencies classifying the matter as top-secret. Rumors now have Jordan Detweiler embarking on a Council-sanctioned mission into the virtual world to make diplomatic contact.”

So we know that the Citadel Council has some radical technology that has nothing to do with the Reapers planned design. And this is the conclusion:

09/26/2010 - Volunteers Step Forward to Swap Places with Virtual Aliens

“Deadlocked Council deliberations over the fate of Ambassador Sygan ended today with a surprising twist: the Council will grant asylum to the virtual alien emissary in the body of a volunteer, allowing famed MIT
exobiologist Dr. Jordan Detweiler to return to his own body. Ambassador Sygan will transfer her consciousness into the volunteer's body, while the volunteer's consciousness is downloaded into a computer.Upon hearing
this decision, some 400 individuals from various races have volunteered to "swap places" with aliens inside the virtual world who wish to re-join the physical universe. One asari volunteer regarded this as "an
amazing opportunity to explore a new realm of existence," while a salarian volunteer said, "I'm doing it because I'm tired of our universe. It's a mess."

And here in lies a way for Commander Shepard and Co. to survive the Reaper War.If worse comes to worse... There is a text from the video game Out-lander that is appropriate here:

30,000 Years Ago

Fall back through time

Become the ancient hero

Let his spirits, dark and light

Arm you in this final battle

Imprisoned by a hero, a soul waiting through the ages.

His time has come again -- and so has theirs...

Commander Shepard in the distant future uses this technology as it was used in his time. The future alien races recognises how much of an assest he can be to them, but he tells them what Bruce Willis says
to Billy Bob Thortons character in Armageddon:

"You brought me here b/c somebody told you that I was the best Spectre. But i'm only the best because I work with the best."

His teammates who survived join him in this New Galaxy, to do all within their power to defeat the Reapers for good...Posted Image

I wouldn't mind this as a potential ending. But I don't plan on ever seeing it.

Make it happen Bioware. this way people who don't like it have to actually work for their "sunshine and rainbows" ending. I personally would still try to get that ending anyway, lol. also when the alien race activates the Shepard VI it would also cut to other VI's being shown with different squad members.

@ubermensch007: B5 is shorthand for Babylon 5. In case you don't know, it was a sci-fi TV show made in the 90s, and one of the first sci-fi shows to have an overarching storyline. Check it out if you haven't seen it. It has something like this in the season 4 finale, where the actions of the main characters are projected hundreds of years in the future.

I really want this to be a potential ending - Shepard realises he has failed and has to find ways of warning the next civilization. Perhaps the final scenes of this ending involve some new species interacting with a Vigil-like version of Shepard, 50,000 years after ME3, and then showing that species going on to finally defeat the Reapers. If done right it would be the ultimate bittersweet ending.

This would be so cool.

Technology? They have the balls to fling poo at a Krogan warlord's face, they don't need no Technology.

Other bittersweet ending could be when reapers die, the mass relays and Citadel stop working. Thus all the worlds are alive, but separated, maybe not forever but for a long time.

@wizardryforever - Thanks for answering that. I've only ever saw a portion of an episode of Babylon 5. But it seemed like a really interesting thought provoking series. In the bit I saw a fellow was having severe headaches do to something or other. And he ended up transmogrifying into a being of pure energy, as Eienstein speculated about... It was pretty cool.So I'll see if B5 is on Netflix or Hulu...

@armass: That would be pretty harsh, and messed up.But worth BioWare considering having as one eventuality...

That is a thought provoking OP. I've never seen that CDN article. Maybe it's an unofficial CDN article?

Anyway. I think... hinting at some legacy of the fight against the Reapers would be good enough. This could be done in numerous interesting, satisfying ways.

That would be so sad. Although I suppose that the species are spread out enough to avoid total seperation.

I love the thought of failing. honestly it should be 80% of endings IMO. otherwise the reapers seem kind of lame

I think failing is gonna be the same same dying on accident in the suicicde mission, that is to say that you have to be a dumb ass in order to get it.

It better not or I will be so mad I could kick something.

*tink*

Seriously, we need to give the Reapers some weight, at least in the end if not in the first games.

Recently, I've been replaying Mass Effect 1.And the other day I discovered this extrodinary dialog betwixt Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko and Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams - while on an elevator at the Citadel:

Kaidan:Hearing about the Protheans, makes me wonder if some distant civilization is going to find our artifacts someday, and study us...

Ashley:No sir. When some distant civilization finds our artifacts. We'll be right there to explain what they are...

Kaidan:I hope so Williams. But I'll bet the Protheans thought the same thing...

That just seems a reference to the reapers looming over the galaxy, not a potential ending of me3

Damn. I had a really long reply already written. Then I hit the wrong key, now it´s gone.

Ah, well. Here´s the short version:

ME3 would be awesome if it didn´t adhere to the classic hero story-formula and I wouldn´t consider the OP´s proposition an "failure"-ending. In fact, ME3 would skyrocket to the top of my "best games of all time"-list (unless the gameplay was really bad, but even then it would earn an honorable mention), would this be the default ending. An ending that makes one think is better than all the most awesome endings where the baddies get kicked and the hero rides off into the sunset combined. That said, the "we saved the galaxy" ending should also be in the game. It would be nice, if a little work/a chain of correct decisions was required for that.

A fairy-tale ending should not be possible though (meaning: losses and required sacrifices should always be high, unlike on the suicide mission).

But this discussion is in vain anyhow. Bioware won´t change the entire narrative so relatively close to release.

People keep saying that there is no way to beat the reapers but frankly i say that the fact that they have gone way past there time table and the fact that they had to fly all the way from dark space is going to play a big part in there eventual defeat.

@psiasterisk, I believe BioWare has already confirmed that Mass Effect 3, will have a Reapers are victorious ending. The question is: Will it be as difficult to see as getting Commander Shepard and everyone else killed during the Suicide Mission?

I never did that myself. But you sort of have to forcibly make Commander Shepard incompetent for that eventuality to play out.And for me, that just breaks my "suspension of disbelief" and enters 'meta gaming' territory that I don't care for. I prefer to role play not throw the fight...

I believe that what I speak of in my OP should be - as you say,"The Default Ending of Mass Effect 3.After all, isn't that exactly the worse case scenario that Shepard and company are fighting against? To many ME players of late, strike me as to over-confident about Shepard being victorious, and the Reapers defeated.I'm not saying that it can't happen. But it shouldn't be easy.

On a side note.If J.K.Rowling would have ended Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with Chapter 34 "The Forest Again" I would consider that novel to be a masterpiece! Ending the story with none of us knowing what happened after Harry Potter sacrifices himself.Would have been a vey bold daring and balsy move on her part.
