I recently bought Baldur's gate 1 and 2 and am playing through them as a mage. So far I have gotten to level 2 and have had a lot of fun with some of the side quests. The quest about returning a chicken to human form was especially amusing. I have a few questions that I haven't been able to find by searching. I'm level 2 but I can't memorize level 2 spells yet. I have a few but there is no slot. Also what factors determine how many spells you can memorize. I know rings of wizardry and increasing in level does, but does anything else affect the amount you can cast in a day? Any help in clearing these questions up would be great. :wizard:

You have to be a 3rd level mage to cast a 2nd level spell. I know, it's confusing. When you went to 2nd level mage, you got a second 1st level spell slot.

Most casters gain access to a new spell level every two levels after level 1.

2nd level spells at 3rd level, 3rd level spells at 5th level, 4th level spells at 7th level, etc.

It goes by numerical tables; take a look at this:

A mage's intelligence determine how many spells you can memorize in total. It also determines how succesfull you will be when you scribe your spells (from scrolls) to your spellbok. Right-click the spells and select - scribe to spellbook - and wait for the pling sound. However, please press the Q(quicksave) before doing this, then you'll always can reload and try again. Later on, or perhaps also earlier, there's will be potion of genius etc. that'll allow you (or rather your mage) to gain +4 or +3 intelligence. And the effect of these potions stack e.g. if you have an intelligence of 16 and drink two potions + 4, you'll end up having an intelligence of 24.

I'm not familiar with any rules that determines how many spells you can cast pr. day -
however, I do think that for some high levels spells you're only allowed to cast them one pr. day...
A ring of wizardry will help you gain +1 or +2 more spells slots in your spellbook for say level 1 or level 2 spells.

There are no spells with a one-per-day limit. A 20th level wizard can cast two 9th level spells per day. A 22nd level wizard can cast three 9th level spells per day.

There are two wizard "spells" that are actually "High Level Abilities (HLA's)". Those are governed by the rules for HLA's.

Intelligence has nothing to do with how many spell slots you get, and will not influence that number one way or the other. It governs your percent chance to scribe a scroll, and the maximum number of spells per spell level that you can scribe into your spell book.

To clarify further, this is only true for 2nd edition of D&D and below.

In 3rd edition and 3.5 edition, higher Intelligence gives bonus spells.

Yes, but just mentioning it in case OP went to Baldur's Gate after already having played NWN 1/2.
