Maybe Malcolm was a blood mage? A really bad one? It would explain why he fled so far, which it implied from the Mage Item Pack, to the Free Marches in Ferelden. No idea how the Grey Wardens are involved though. Having three kids makes it extremely unlikely he was a Warden himself.
