On a tangent, am I the only person who still plays (on occasion) Mass Effect 1? My father, sister, each have played ME2 multiple times and are even still playing it. I find that going back to ME1 now and again to be quite excellent - and wishing they (Bioware/EA) would re-do the game with the ME2/ME3 engine and re-release it in a final "ME Collector's Edition". I would hate to see the first game that started the entire thing fade away because of software obsolescence. You can already sense ME1's "age" and it is, in my absolutely CORRECT opinion, the best of the two ME games thus far.
I still play ME1 occasionally, though I'm relatively new to gaming in general - I only got a decent laptop a year and a half ago, and got into the Mass Effect universe last spring and summer. I agree that a remake of that sort would be nice, but I don't find the style of play inhibiting or detracting from the experience. (By contrast, I also like Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and I tried playing the original Fallout and found the graphical style and turn-based play completely off-putting.) ME2's gameplay style may be better, but IMO it's not *that* much better, and all the Mass Effect games will probably seem relatively "obsolete" five years from now.
Anyway, I think focusing on ME1 for the movie makes sense. They can't really hope to squeeze all three games into a two-hour movie - hell, just squeezing the main missions of ME1 into a two-hour movie is going to be difficult enough. Plus, ME1 has a good stopping point - Shepard and company sort of defeat the Reapers, but they're going to attack again soon. If the movie doesn't turn out well critically or commercially and they don't do any more movies, then the story can end there (just as the game franchise could have if ME1 hadn't been well-received or made much money).
