They're focusing on Shepard but it's a completely new story? Huh? I don't know if like where this is going. Could it be a prequel of some sort, or are they 're-envisioning' Mass Effect's story already?

It's probably a side mission like, Shepard vs. the insane Turian general or Reaper 666.

I'm disappointed. I wanted an adaptation of ME1.

I had thought of that possiblity as well. That just doesn't make any sense to me. How are they going to introduce Mass Effect's story in the movie format with a 'side story'? I really want to see the Mass Effect universe expand, but 'side stories' aren't what I want to see from movies.

Something important could have happened with Shepard, say, before Mass Effect, or in between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (Wasn't the prologue three months after ME?) or even after Mass Effect 3. But how could they insert this event into the canon, and how could they appropriately introduce the universe through those stories?

It would be pretty cool to see a prequel movie that helped give more info on Shepard's background. However, given the origin choices in the game when you create your version of Shepard such a movie might not be the best way to go. A one-off adventure would probably be the best option as it would allow the writing staff the greatest amount of freedom in crafting the plot. Either way this is definitely a movie that I want to see.

Nooo, don't cast Michelle as Ashley! Then I'll have to drop my immature, semi-serious hatred for her character Image IPB

For some reason I keep picturing the plot of the "GI Joe" movie set in the ME universe.

But who knows.  Maybe it will be the next "Blade Runner" only w/ lots of explosions.

First Contact War...meh. Make it about another group of characters during or after the events of the Mass Effect trilogy.

I hear what you are saying, but fans are a fickle bunch anyway. I believe if it is Shepard and a well made film people will get behind it in droves. Get JJ Abrams for this! The New Star Trek was bad ass and I'd love to see that same energy brought to bare on Shepard's story.

I totally agree with JJ Abrams. Star Trek definitely surprised me. It was amazing.

Unlikely studios don't put much cash behind original IP anymore because it's not safe, the overwhelming majority of studio movies (90%+) are remakes of IP from before the era of the internet. It's kinda ironic but movies have become the real bottom dumpster of entertainment, with television shows like Dexter and Mad Men really surpassing most releases in virtually every aspect. Whereas prior to the internet is was very much the opposite, movies were always the upper echelon and TV was just candy coated escapist trash. A television show has an vested interested in maintaining a certain level of quality, it wants people to keep tuning in and looking at the ads thus generating money. A movie has about a week to make it's money back before it's forgotten by the public and just vanishes.

I can say one thing about a Mass Effect movie: It will be another mindless, drool enducing, emotionless, consequence free, visually exhasting, CG bloated movie that you watch and walk out of not able to really remember ever watching it. Like most movies that come out now.

That's exactly right, adneate. Movies play it safe these days.  And that's why Shepard can't be female in the movie, because it would be a ... "heavy risk."  :P

"That was a joke."

Making a Shepard centric ME film without the main Reaper story is like making Fight Club without Tyler Durden. Boo to this.

If this is a new unique story and not based on the story of the game, it's a BIG mistake to include Shepard as a protagonist.

Yes, it is. It should be the same setting, but a different story with different characters, maybe some limited cameos with Anderson or Hackett but nothing more. The point of the character Cmd. Shepard is that he/she is undefined, he/she is what we want him/her to be. It wouldn't work in a movie - at least not for the hardcore fans of the ME trilogy.

Gratz on either chickening out or kowtowing to gutless movie execs, bravo. This sounds seriously lame now, you know why side missions are side missions? Because they aren't interesting enough to be core missions.

No thanks BW, I'll stick with the games now.

EDIT: Well, unless the trailer makes it look shizz hot, but my default setting is now avoid.

I'd rather have this than ANYTHING revolving around Shepard. Shepard is an undefined, ambiguous character that should be left to the imagination of the gamers, not the pocket of some Hollywood producer. I hate the idea of there being a canon Shepard with canon backstory and a canon personality. Way to drop the ball Bioware, the movie hasn't even gotten casted and I'm already dissapointed with it.:crying:

Just hope its animted or CGI. I'ld shudder to think what horrors Hollywood would creat given a free hand and live action.

Agreed, though the original TMNT did it pretty well for it's time.

As for the movie, I would REALLY like it to NOT have SHEPARD in it.  What I would immensily enjoy is a movie adaptation of the FIRST CONTACT WAR with a new person of interest that the movie series on ride on for a few movies, or focusing on the Illusive Man, and his transition from good-to-evil, a bit like Anakein Skywalker in SW:Ep I-III, but done much better.

Or, I could also dig a motion picture based on the events of the first ME book between Saren and Anderson.  That would be a great introduction into the universe and the beginning of the Reaper threat.  I envision Will Smith to play Anderson and Jennifer Aniston to play Kahlee Sanders :D

Regardless of the movie though, if it's a prequel, it must include NIHLUS!

When I was reading "A completely new story..." I was happy as can be - but than "Male Shepard as protagonist..." ... REALLY? I thought the player is Shepard and the decisions matter. How can I make decisions during the movie? Do I bring my save game and change rooms inbetween reflection decisions I would make? Like movie pause and suddenly "Everyone who would kill him go to the next room - everyone else stay"... WTF?

I wanted a new lead character and they could have talked about Shepard just like in the comics. Why do that? Why?

Will watch it but sure as hell am not pleased!

I have one and only one condition for the movie, a condition which I am confident is shared by the fan base: DO NOT F-ING INCLUDE SHEPARD

Legendary has updated their movie Q&A panel with more accurate answers, apparently.

http://www.legendary...tions-answered/

MASS EFFECT
Q:  Will it just be an adaptation of the first game, second game, or a completely new story?
A:  It will focus on Commander Shepard's journey, centering around the story of the original Mass Effect game.
Q:  How are you going to address the element of 'choice' that the players have in the game?
A:  The writer is weaving a path through Shepard's decisions
that best supports the narrative of the movie and the motivations of its
characters.
Q:  Will it be a trilogy?
A:  We are really focused on making this a great movie, so we'll see
where it takes us.  We have to get the first one right to know whether
there will be more.
Q:  Will Seth Green portray Joker, the character he voiced in the game?
A:  No casting decisions have been made yet.
Q:  Will the movie be focused on Shepard?
A:  Yes.
Q:  If the movie is focused on Shepard, will it be the male Shepard or the female Shepard?
A:  Male.
Q:  Can you give any hints to potential casting?
A:  No.  Stay tuned.
Q:  Will BioWare allow plot / character changes?
A:  Yes, we are working closely with BioWare on the development of this project.
Q:  Would you consider Daft Punk to do the soundtrack?
A:  We love Daft Punk, but it's too early to say who will produce the soundtrack.

Many are the same answers as before but a few are different. The first in particular is vastly different.
