I personally think showing the First Contact War would be the best bet, but meh.

Spacer or earther, or spacer who lived on earth for a while, and on a colony, with the admiral mom would be good, officer school, etc.
Liara love interest, would preserve the throughline of the trilogy, introduce and explain the asari strongly and effectively, and make a clear point to the viewer that this isn't just another Earth vs. Aliens cliche. Also it pushes the alien cast into an equal footing.
Save the rachni, because it's again, more interesting, less cliched..
And I'm not sure on the Virmire Survivor, thinking Kaidan should live right now. As it stands, Shepard's the only really strong male human character in the Mass Effect stable. Kaidan's history with biotics, etc., gives him more narrative ground to work with, and Ashley's sacrifice would dovetail nicely with her family history. It would also provide a serious blow to general preconceptions of what the likely story would be with the lone female human lead of the first film going down like that. Miranda and Jack are so strong, I think the trilogy of films would benefit. Also, not every human lead character Shepard plays off should be exclusively female throughout the series. Keeping Kaidan alive gives Shepard a bit of a male spoil through all three films.
Save the council, of course.
Make sure to hit the colonies, possibly combine the three starting mission worlds and storylines, add Liara into the main cast as early as possible, probably on the Citadel along with Garrus, Tali, and Wrex. Make sure to get Liara's confrontation with her indoctrinated mother in there, Virmire, and the VI.
Obviously, give Shep some pop, don't play him straight stoic/appreciative or aggressive against aliens. Get some back and forth in there.
Make sure Saren does shoot himself in the head. Make sure we get the weightless combat on the Citadel.
Make sure the movie actually starts during the mission leading to Shepard's nomination to Spectre status, the origin mission, which nobody has seen in game.
Sounds like a winner to me. ;-) Make the right decisions, Legendary/Bioware.
disclaimer: I did not actually take the above exact path straight through with any of my personal playthroughs. I just think it makes the best movie, and the best trilogy possible, as long as the films stay based on the games.

You did read the answers to the questions as well, right? The movie will have a completely new plot. So no Virmire, no saving the council, and maybe no rachni or Liara.
I myself am actually happy with this decision. The plot of ME1 is just too short for a movie, and the three games combined would be too long. If they can think of a good main plot, something which introduces all the species, all the complexity of the ME universe, but has some closure, then it could be interesting to people who didn't play the games as well. The ME ecosystem is interesting enough to make a good movie, let's hope they can do it.

Whatever... Even though I am a big Mass Effect fan I will not support this movie and watch it. If I want to see the events of Mass Effect 1 without being able to make decisions I let a friend of mine play and watch him.

For hell's sake. I have a low tolerance for this incessant whine because this is a religious argument for too many (and I am totally areligious and cannot tolerate it): 1st contact war is so very colloqial and narrow-beam that no one will give a crap for it outside of the miniscule ME gaming audience. General audiences would be scratching their heads thinking, "much ado about nothin'". A "war" that lasts all of a few days for all intents and purposes, has no connection to anything they give a crap about...what a waste.
2nd, depicting a Shep means nothing. You will already have played even the 3rd and last game a bazillion times before there is even a preview for general audiences! You will ALL be playing something else and will rarely, if ever, be back playing an old game like ME1, 2, 3. You game experience will remain whatever it was REGARDLESS of how they depict the movie Shepard.
3rd, only the actual game and books that tie them together make any sense, have any coherence, creates a full narrative arc, has a clear plot, a clear beginning, middle, end. A movie based on nothing that no one cares about (1st Contact War?! WTFC?) It is fitting that it is simply a background minor statement in the game series as that is all it requires. The only way it even would make sense to make an expensive movie out of it would be if it were a tie-in or filler between the Main Attraction: the Shepard story with the ONLY story that matters one iota, that being the Reapers. Period. End of story. You CANNOT tell the story of the Reapers (the ENTIRE basis of the ME universe, Mass Relays, the entire false history of the Citadel, Relays, etc, that the Citadel space races believe) without having Shepard front-and-center. Impossible. He is the only person of any consequence that is fighting to expose them, let alone defeat them. ANY other story is a sidecar and minor and a waste of money and effort. Fit only to be filler between main events depicting Shepard in the fight against the Reapers.
I have said my piece and will say no more. I can say that the more this crap argument goes on and the whining about "don't ruin my personal Shepard by creating one of your own!" the less interested in the movie I become. Especially if the movie developers cater to the whining and pander to some ridiculous few who can't see a future for themselves (gaming or otherwise) without the ME games in it.
Take a rest. Try playing something else until 3 comes out. Try Deus Ex, for instance. Try the original if you can get it and go from there. Collapse into Dragon Age and become wedded to your particular DA character as THE sacrosanct version that Must Not Be Officially Depicted (lest it ruin your life). By "you" I mean the collective 'you' made up of those with a deep emotional/religious need to sanctify your own personal Shepard forever more, amen.
Sheesh.

Turns out... it is about ME1.
This came out before and I was relieved that the producers/director/writers saw reason from the first. Then I saw more of the same old tired emotional arguments about "NOES! DON'T DEPICT SHEPARD PLEEEEEZE!" and dreams that the movie would be about nonsense outside the actual coherent game story got me confused again that the writers were getting all flipfloppy and spinless.
Movies about minor details of the ME universe WILL NOT WORK. They do not hold their own and ONLY work when framed against the ME trilogy of games with Shepard in them. They are supporting characters to the ME game's main character (Shepard, Reapers). They are not the things from which strong movies are made.
Everyone knows you don't go full retard. Going with First Contact War or some other peripheral nonevent would be going full retard. Never go full retard.

Legendary has updated their movie Q&A panel with more accurate answers, apparently.
http://www.legendary...tions-answered/
MASS EFFECT
Q: Will it just be an adaptation of the first game, second game, or a completely new story?
A: It will focus on Commander Shepard's journey, centering around the story of the original Mass Effect game.
Q: How are you going to address the element of 'choice' that the players have in the game?
A: The writer is weaving a path through Shepard's decisions
that best supports the narrative of the movie and the motivations of its
characters.
Q: Will it be a trilogy?
A: We are really focused on making this a great movie, so we'll see
where it takes us. We have to get the first one right to know whether
there will be more.
Q: Will Seth Green portray Joker, the character he voiced in the game?
A: No casting decisions have been made yet.
Q: Will the movie be focused on Shepard?
A: Yes.
Q: If the movie is focused on Shepard, will it be the male Shepard or the female Shepard?
A: Male.
Q: Can you give any hints to potential casting?
A: No. Stay tuned.
Q: Will BioWare allow plot / character changes?
A: Yes, we are working closely with BioWare on the development of this project.
Q: Would you consider Daft Punk to do the soundtrack?
A: We love Daft Punk, but it's too early to say who will produce the soundtrack.
Many are the same answers as before but a few are different. The first in particular is vastly different.
It's still going to suck

I do support idea of the this movie but they will need to put some serious brain thinking into it, and if they don't screw:( it up it will be:O better than Avatar which had good efects butmainly plot killed the film.
