In my game, there was only one crew member, the female Doctor.
Sent her off on her own and she didnt make it.

Did anyone else get any other crew member?
Is it always only the doctor?

Depends on how many missions you do in between the attack of your ship and the final mission. If you immediately go through the relay the whole crew is saved. If you do 1-3 missions then half the crew dies, and if you do 4 or more only the doctor survives. And if you don't send an escort to the Normandy when you save the crew they all die.
