Overall I though Hale was better than Meer, because I though Hale portrayed Shepard with a more composure and was compassionate without sounding like a lame during emotional moments (e.g. consoling Tali on the Alarei & Liara after killing the Shadow Broker) like Meer portrayed Shep. As a mostly paragon player, there were times I chose neutral or renegade options just to avoid listening to some of those goody-two-shoes reads.

Mark Meer's renegade performance is perfect. Hale is inconsistent. If you go from a paragon to a renegade line it's as if you're listening to a completely different person. That's why Meer went for a neutral performance.

I actually prefer it to sound different. The difference between Paragon and Renegade is primarily about attitude and attitude is all in the voice. I want her to sound compassionate as a Paragon and hard-ass as a Renegade. It makes sense.

Of course, if you make a habit of switching between the two mid-conversation then it's going to jar but that just encourages you to be consistent which, in my opinion, is a good thing :D

Too bad that the dialogue choices aren't always as consistent.

People who complain about Meer's voice being to monotone probably haven't heard people like traffic controllers, ambulance nurses or officers speak, their voices certainly  doesnt turn thick with emotions when there is blood everywhere, monotone, sounds bussiness like and comforting in those cases. Hales voice always have some inflection of emotion even though it gravitates towards bored/horny and she just doesn't do it for me, it becomes even more accentuated when Meer's Shepard does the rousing speech thing emotions surfacing, why in Hale's case it's just more of the same.
Like what kind of voice would you like to guide you through a minefield blindfolded, Meers or Hales?
I would have prefered femshep sounding more like Ashley Williams.

The other option would be to go for grit, like the starcraft marines but that very easily comes across as trying to hard to be badass, like Zaed.

What does a soldier sound like?
What does a lesbian sound like?

Everyone seems to have these definitions of what a certain type of person should sound like.  It confuses me...

Listen,  I've met my share of soldiers and none of them sound a like.  They may think a like on a certain level (I'm sure that has something to do with basic training) but,  you can't seriously believe that soldiers are all stoic badasses.  They're humans,  with human feelings...  sure,  they know how to keep their head clear under fire but this really has nothing to do with inflection/emotions/ or tone of voice.

I think we can pin unhappiness of VA performances on BW.  Posted Image  After all, they have their own ideas how each Shep should sound like in various situations. No flowers for them for making VAs sound loony, off-coolured in badly written dialogues.  Posted Image

I Didnt Say Stoic Ether Now did i,You can have Master on your emotions without being deadpan,Soldiers Just no when to hold  back and  control them selves in times of crisis

These soldiers youve met have u ever talked to them while they were "on the job" as it were [i.e could be shot at any moment?]

For me Mark Meer plays the perfect Military Officer. I've never played FemShep (mostly because I find it awkward to play a female character when I am male, but that's just me). But I've seen enough videos of Jennifer's performance, shes a great VA don't get me wrong, but she doesn't fit that "Military Officer" type that she should be playing. Again, she's very talented and good at what she does but she needs to work on how a military commander should sound like.

Tbh, the only real problem I have with Male Shep is his facial expressions which needs some major work.

Never had the chance unfortunatly,  I was against the idea of don't ask don't tell.

I just think your generalizing way to much,  I don't see how Meer sounds like more of a soldier than Hale or vice versa.   I'm sure you perceive it as such,  but,  really it's all in your head.

I like Mark Meer's stoic/monotonous attitude. Hale does a bit better Paragon emotional scenes, but Hale shows more emotion in general, but I prefer less emotion others prefer more emotion. Both do great jobs. I think Meer did better overall in ME2, and owned LotSB waaaay more than Hale did. ME1 I would give the edge to Hale.

It comes down to preference. They're both great IMO.

I'd imagine the only way either Shepard could sound better is if they resembled John Marston and his "Howdy Mister."

But why the silly arguments? They both sound better than just about anything out there.

That's what you are suggesting though "She doesn't sound like a soldier."  Which, means that a soldier MUST sound a one typical way.

This is starting to look suspiciously like a woman can't "Sound like a soldier."

What a good point....I am prone to panic, so definitley Meer guiding me please, he stays calm...Hale would hit my panic button.

Not at All [please stop putting words in my mouth], Ashley and Mirianda sound like soldiers

Iam tempted to say Samara too

And you know what Tali Has Very Perfesional and Soldier sounding moments as well, Especaily on Freedome's  progress

Thinking about Call of Duty voice actors, especially Reznov, that guy sure badass as hell! Why Bioware wouldn't hire these guys?

Back on topic,
Mark Meer sounds perfect for the default Shepard,Jennifer Hale is fine though,I wonder if she play the game as Male Shep? and Zaeed Massani? no comment about him! Kasumi? doesn't sound Japanese to me,replace her with Maeko Matsuo.Liara is too subtle like schoolgirl, compared to Samara, that Justicar is better. The rest is alright.

I hope Jen Taylor be in the next game.

I don't see how Ashley or Miranda sound any more "Soldier" than Femme Shepard.  I can understand "Better than Femme shepard" but,  I still can't get my head around the fact that someone can "Sound" like a soldier.  As  I see no similiarities between Ashley,  Miranda or Sheploo.

Miranda sounds like a soldier. She is very matter-of-fact. Liara in Lotsb is pretty badass too, except for the car scene chase. But she turns the tables on the collector ship. Tali definitely sounds like a soldier when you meet her on Freedom's Progress and she's slapping her whiney squad into line - although they mutiny on her later, pretty much. Jack, of course, is a psychopath, not a soldier.
