I don't know about some of you guy's hearing perceptions. but Mark Meer doesn't sound monotone to me. In terms of character personality, male Shepard isn't or shouldn't have to be a character who overly shows emotions. If anything, Shepard's personality and speaking tone is comparable to Samus Aran in Metroid: Other M. To start, Shepard and Samus are both galactic heroes and coincidentally, they act as bounty hunters. Yes, There are times when Shepard is a bounty hunter in a sense. Hunting for mercs, escapees, and villains of his own free will or for the Council. For characters that underwent military training and fought to save life throughout the galaxy on a galactic scale, wouldn't they have to be emotionally well-kept? When Samus speaks, most of the time she's stern, focused, prompt, and sometimes thoughtful. When in dire situations in Other M, she spoke with distress, worry, and frantic when she encountered Ridley again and when her Commander Adam sacrificed himself; all of which are understandable and acceptable considering the circumstances whether some people accept it or not. Shepard has emotional tones too. In Arrival he spoke with rightful emotion to Harbinger and to Admiral Hackett about the killed Batarian situation. He wasn't critically saddened and he shouldn't. He knows what's at stake and he knows that being emotionally injured isn't what will complete the mission.
