For me, it's the "The Cradle" from Thief 3. The background history that goes with it is disturbing as well.

It was a mission from Unreal 2 for me. Near the end of the game.

Undying, as a whole, was quite scary.

And the Ocean House section in Vampire: Bloodlines.

This. The only bad thing is nothing later is as scary (there´s still plenty of horror however).

I don´t know how well it will have aged, but the marine campaign in the first Alien vs Predator was quite scary.

Forgot to mention the mall in Condemned.

Those mannequins, and the BGM. Christ.

I tend to get scared by a lot of things. However, when I played Halo CE when I was 5 and encountered the flood, I didn't play the game for a good month or two.

Some of these are pretty old games and I'm not that old but I used to have a really dated computer so I grew up with old games !
-Alone in the Dark : the spiders falling from the roof in the greenhouse
-Alone in the Dark 2 : I recall the whole game as scary but going upstairs in the house was particularly scary, at the time anyway !
-Alone in the Dark 3 : getting inside the room with a bed decorated with two wooden statues, one of some angel with a bow, the other of an old man. The music was creepy and at some point the angel would suddenly shoot an arrow at the old man !
-Oblivion : not really a scary game but some of the last moments from the Dark Brotherhood questline made me pretty paranoid.
-5 days a stranger and 7 days a skeptic (free amateur games) are pretty scary for how low res they are (probably the story).
-Diablo II : act 1, 2 and 3 big bosses + the whole fourth act.

Amnesia is the only game that really scared me. Alone in the Dark can be quite scary as well.

The school level in FEAR 2. Anyone who's played it will know the one I mean.

I nearly s*** my pants playing that the first time. Absolute masterpiece of video game horror, it was. Play it in the dark with the volume turned up, headphones on, on a big monitor.

Not exactly "scary," but Halo 1. The Library. Legendary difficulty.
Tense as hell.

I'd agree with you there. Strangely enough Thief 3 was mentioned here a while ago and I thought I'd play it again - just finished it yesterday. Unfortunately that mission wasn't as scary as the first time I played it because I knew when things would happen, but it was still chilling.

This, especially on the first playthrough. On my first playthrough I got to that section late night, with only a light on at the other end of the room, so I only had the light from my monitor in my vision.

Completely agree with you! That level especially is the only one in my entire video game history where I literally jumped out of my seat. One of the crazies was sneaking around while I was walking down the hallway of one of the stores with a shotgun, and I approach the end of the aisle and he pops out of cover and charges me at about 5 feet away. I gasped (in real life) and by sheer instinct pressed the trigger. Breathed a sigh of relief when he was dead.

I've never been able to have a moment like that before or after.

The entire game is probably the scariest I've ever played, imo. Silent Hill 2 came close, but its been so long since I've played it that I can't remember it well.

I loved that !

Too bad the stupid sequel had to ruin the franchise with its 'magical powers' and cults nonsense.

Don't know about particular missions or levels but Amnesia certainly sticks out as being extremely scary at times. The Penumbra games before also had a lot of impact. Though the games lose a lot of their scariness (a problem with horror games overall I guess) once you "learn" how they work.

Silent Hill 2 is my favorite game in the series by far but I think the first game was a lot scarier at the time of their release. SH1 was extremely hard for me to get through, had to play it in small chunks.

Not necessarily the scariest but the section with the Librarians in Metro 2033 is certainly some of the most panic-inducing gameplay I've ever experienced.

Most horror games (and films) are very bad at what they try to do though IMO. I will never understand how people will find stuff like Dead Space scary for example. The lighting and areas are fantastic but the devs do a crap job of utilizing them for horror.
