Ok, this is one of those questions that's so newbish that I'm embarassed to ask it, but here goes: I've been trying to fight tactically, having Varric and whatever mage I'm using move back and used ranged attacks while my front-line guys defend in a narrow corridor or other chokepoint to keep from being surrounded by enemy mobs. However, I'm finding that I'm constantly having to switch control between the characters in my party, because they always seem to want to rush headlong into combat. It's like herding cats. Is there some basic trick that I'm missing that will tell my characters to hold position, or will give me finer control over how they behave? Is it simply a matter of changing their behavior settings? Thanks.

If you're fighting in a narrow corridor there's a chance your ranged characters are trying to target someone they don't have a direct line of sight to. Also if they have ranged tactics and they find themselves too close to an enemy they'll start running around, possible directly toward groups of enemies, which can happen often in tight corridors.

1) There's a "Hold Position" function (press "H" on PC)
2) You can use "Ranged" behavior in tactics
3) Varric and Anders are suicidal anyway

Flament, usually the problem isn't with what they do in those tight corridors, but in getting them in there in the first place. I move them in, and then they want to immediately turn around and run right back into those wide open rooms where all the enemies are.

Hold is your friend in those cases. There is a particular fight in the Deep Roads (the dragon) where they just will not stay put for me no matter what I do (if I put them back past the crack in the wall the dragon can't go through) but other than that they do as told.
