Indeed. But no matter how addicted a Templar becomes, once you cross his moral border, he will not follow that order. His border may or may not be pused by his addiction, but the addiction does not make him a mindless drone.

A willingness to nurse an addiction to the point of personal selfdestructiveness and moral degradation does not imply straight out mindlessness. Part of the reality of addiction is that very addicted people will go to extraordinary lengths to satisfy their addictions.

They didn't really "rebel", they left the Chantry (keyword: left). Probably because the Chantry tried to prevent them from going on a mage killing spree.

And has already been stated, some Templars DO need the lyrium to be Templars.

Varric uses the word rebel. Also, I'm not sure what you'd classify as the rest of the moral Templars actions as against Meredith, etc, during DA2 if not rebellion. One definition of rebellion is "defiance"-- and they were doing exactly that.

And I still question the source of that because of Varric and his 'common knowledge' and his audience (Chantry clergy).

we don't know the nature of the Mage templar war and who is on who's side, what we know is that one side is prominently Mages and the other is prominently Templars, with the chantry as a smaller third party in this debacle.
