I'm just not seeing any genlock, no matter what kind being that tall.  Dwarves are not that tall to start with.  Look at my picture above of my female Hawke and Varric.  I'm just not seeing this.

Now compare the size of ogres to the size of qunari.

But the lore on Orges has been consistent.  They are roughly the same size in both games and the codex entries.  You cannot say the same thing for genlocks.  The lore says hurlocks are bigger than genlocks.  Alphas are just the biggest of genlocks, but that doesn't mean they tack on 2 or 3 extra feet or more.  They're just the tallest of the genlocks.

So it's not about me comparing anything.  I'm just reading and going by what they gave me in codexes.

Look at the image url, it's a genlock.

Seriously, please, go back to the original art design, or just drop darkspawn all together. The retconned yellow, super sized or skeltor, S&M designs are just too stupid and painful. God, how I hate the new derpspawn.

And I don't recall Alphas in DAO (whose designs of for darkspawn actually looked scary) being bigger than their brethren. And even if someone had been clever enough to do so, would they really be two to three times the size? Do alphas get a special diet? It's one thing to be smarter as an alpha but to be so grossly engorged? Bleh.

I wish the darkspawn would just get to go quietly back into that good night. And I'll play DAO.

The Genlock in the picture is about the same height as Hawke and Fenris by the looks of it.(Not accounting for the crested helmet)

Varric is about 1ft to 1ft 6" shorter than Hawke. And Varric is by all accounts, an average dwarf. Genlocks on average are ostensibly dwarf sized, seeing as they are corripted dwarves. So, the genlock in question is not two to three times as large as a dwarf.

It is in fact, probably only 25% or so taller than the average dwarf. Based on that one image.

It's one to two heads taller than Hawke and Fenris if it stood up straight. That makes it about what...two feet taller than a human and a tall elf? Sorry, that makes it two to three times taller to me.

Hurlock alphas might also be larger now, actually. By the genlock codex entry, genlock emissaries are the most intelligent alphas. Emissaries in DA2 are much bigger than regular hurlocks. If those are hurlock emissaries I suppose it stands to reason they are the most intelligent hurlock alphas, giving us an idea of the alpha's size.

Also makes me wonder what the genlock would look like as an emissary.

The emissaries are shrieks. Ie, elven darkspawn.

To be fair that camera angle isn't the best and Hawke seems to be the same size as Fenris, an elf. And elves are supposed to be shorter than humans.

The camera angle is facing upward, which skews the perception of height.

Fenris isn't a tall elf. Hawke is a short human.

people base that around the fact that the emissaries have pointy ears like elves.

And if they are indeed Hurlock emissaries, Bioware failed big time.

And I'm not judging the quality of the DLC from this, but this kind of stuff just annoys me. If you lay out rules of your world, you should stick by them. It's not like this is a case where I imagined something and the game didn't live up to it. I was given info by the game's makers and they disregarded their own lore. That just should never be the case.

This is like the no teleportation rule in Thedus. Yet I see mages teleporting all over the screen. Rogues using vendetta and teleporting across the entire field of battle. If you lay down the rules stick by what you put out there.

They weren't genlocks. They were gremlins. Evil, disgusting gremlins =P.

That's actually one of the reasons why I hated the gremlins in Origins. The ears. Made no sense.

Hm. They look like LOTR trolls to me.
Yes, yes, I'm not contributing or saying anything new. But that's what they look like.

Again, look how tall Varric is when he is standing right next to my Hawke, as in toe to toe next to her. He is about 4ft 6" tall.

Posted Image

He is, we assume, an average dwarf. Thus he would make an average Genlock. An Alpha would be markedly taller than him and wider no doubt.

Two to three times taller than Varric (an average genlock size) would be anywhere from 9ft to 14ft high.

The genlock in the image is cleary nowhere near that height (he is about 25% to 30% taller than Varric) and thus clearly nowhere near two to three times taller.

Where is this stated? They're nothing more than the biggest kid in the class really.

The mage teleportation thing has been explained as the fault of bad implementation of a move that allows the mage to slow down time.

Rogues should've just thrown a smoke bomb that covered a good portion of the field.

Bioware did lay out rules for their world, but the specifics on the rules regarding Genlock Alpha height were never given. As such, we'll have to wait to see if the Genlock Alpha is taller than a Hurlock.

Hawke however is a short human so he can't be used to compare. But the fact that a Genlock Alpha is the same height as Hawke means that most humans will be taller than an Alpha.

Given that we're seeing a genlock alpha and I don't see why normal genlocks wouldn't be a lot smaller the lore remains consistent. Although why consistency in such matters, which really are purely cosmetic, is such a big issue baffles me.

@ The Ethereal Writer Redux: "Rogues should've just thrown a smoke bomb that covered a good portion of the field."

This, I think that liberties should be taken when comparing the lore, to the gameplay and any engine-based limitations

Sorry, wasn't clear. I meant that the Genlock Alphas are as tall as the new Hurlocks, from what I could tell from the demo's brief showing of them. But Hurlocks might still be taller than a Genlock Alpha.

Bad implementation lol.  You mean no implementation.  Even if it was a move that slowed down time you still should have been able to see the mage moving, something like a Matrix blur of a bunch of images of the mage.

See my above post about how not sticking to the rules of your world that you voluntarily put out annoys me whenever it happens.  Game, movie, book wherever it occurs.  Just a pet peeve of mine :?

Edit: Another example was that before you went into the fade in this game, I could have sworn that you were told that if a mage dies in the fade they become traquil, so....

Meh, broodmothers are huge and those are actual dwarves. Doesn't bother me if their children also happen to be huge.

Dammit bioware, you've ruined Shrieks too. Genlocks are the only awesome darkspawn now.

Ohohoh. I know; all genlocks alphas are bigger in DA2 because of the weakened veil! *giggles* I just refought one in DAO and it was dwarf sized. :)

Not that big deal but it's just me or the design....very similar to LOTR trolls(copy, in fact), BioWare better come some lore explanation about Genlocks Alpha huge size though.
