Countless times I've been hearing people calling the DA:O darkspawn LotR orcs rip offs in terms of their appearance, and never have I been able to see much truth in their words. But finally I can agree with them, because that thing on the screenshot IS a darkspawn adopted LotR troll.

If they stick to the redesigned versions I begin to hope DA3 will feature neither elves nor darkspawn...

At :43 we can see the normal-sized genlocks and they do indeed stand shorter than a hurlock (which can be seen briefly beside them). Even so, I have to question what they've done to them. These are supposed to be the most numerous darkspawn and they just look like apes. Giving them unique designs and abilities is one thing, but I think this takes it comically too far.

And spikes on the side of the shield pointing towards Fenris? if that Genlock smacks it into him, that is going to hurt.

That's a shield?  Good grief, I thought that was a broken part of a gigantic metal door or something.

No one complains that the hurlocks where copies of orcs from LotR, but OH NO THE GENLOCKS IN DA2 LOOK LIKE THE CAVE TROLLS AND BIOWARE SUCKS!!!!!

Guys, you have a right to complain, but don't be bias, if you think the Genlocks are clones, then you might as well complain about the Hurlocks in DAO.

It seems Bioware are sticking to the retarded spikes they've introduced to armour design with these new darkspawn as well with that stupid helmet the genlock's wearing.

The darkspawn longswords in DA:O are how you make something look poorly put together - it's jagged across the sides and looks crudely put together, but functional. Compare that to for example, the DA2 hurlock longswords, they're just some jagged crap that would probably disintegrate if you blew a gust of wind at it, and it looks like it was purposely made like that rather than simply being a consequence of poor construction techniques.

And about the LOTR comparisons, I too never saw the similarities that much until now - that genlock really is just a carbon copy.

Those Alphas supposed to be smartest ? Yea sure this one really is. He is standing the whole fight doing nothing and then he die. Very clever beast.

And that I love. These Genlock look like monsters, brutal and animal like. Like they are dangerous and are going to rip your head off. I love it.

Bioware please keep the orge, old shiek design and the new Genlock design for future games, BUT FIX YOUR DAM HURLOCKS!  They suck,

Take your rose tinted glasses off. One of the biggest complaint about the Hurlocks and Genlocks in DAO was they where too similar to orcs, that's why they changed them Now we have crappy Hurlocks and awesome brutal Genlocks.

I literally just now finished my 10th play through of DA:O and i don't see it. Put lotr video on monitor, look at hurlock. Nope don't see it, sorry.

The darkspawn in DA2 are horrible in every way shape and form, maybe it is you who should invest in something other than rose tinted glasses.

Hurlocks are overrated, and ripoffs or not but Genlocks look like a pain in the ass to kill on Nightmare. ;)

Well, in case you didn't hear what was said later in the demo clip, that whole demo was being played at casual level.

Seriously, please, go back to the original art design, or just drop darkspawn all together. The retconned yellow, super sized or skeltor, S&M designs are just too stupid and painful. God, how I hate the new derpspawn.

And I don't recall Alphas in DAO (whose designs of for darkspawn actually looked scary) being bigger than their brethren. And even if someone had been clever enough to do so, would they really be two to three times the size? Do alphas get a special diet? It's one thing to be smarter as an alpha but to be so grossly engorged? Bleh.

I wish the darkspawn would just get to go quietly back into that good night. And I'll play DAO.

And edited to say, you should probably ignore, me. I am just sad about something else and being more sensitive than usual.

Nu, nu, no ignoring you dear. Posted Image

I just wanted to point out one thing here.  Remember when the first pictures surfaced (was it in a Gameinformer magazine or whatnot?) of the new art direction? It was of Hawke and Bethany fighting the darkspawn as they were escaping Lothering, right at the beginning of the game.  People generally hated the new art style, both of the darkspawn and of the environment, saing that the darkspawn were just too clean in appearance and not frightening at all and that the landscare looked so incredibly barren and so drastically changed from the Lothering of DA:O. And we were told that these were the initial or incomplete pictures (can't recall which) and that basically everything will look polished and better in the finished game.

Well, guess what... those very same arguments STILL apply to the finished game. The new darkspawn art style took away the scariness factor, gave them a nice, long, hot bath and tried to make them all look like Skeletor. The landscape still looked like the surface of Mars, when it was supposed to be Lothering we were introduced in DA:O.

*sigh* Seriously Bioware. You have created such a rich and deeply immersing lore... why are you trying to hack it all to pieces? This "innovation" trip you're on is taking away the best parts of what made DA:O such an exciting, immersing experience. I don't like the new darkspawn art style, they don't scare me one bit, really could do without DA trying to delve into the realm of amine, simply cannot reconcile how drastically you have changed Anders and don't even get me started on the Na'vi of DA2 with them Welsh or whatnot accents.

I want to give DA another chance, I really want to be able to lose myself in this wonderful universe that has had such a gripping impact on me in my experiences with DA:O and Awakening... but how can I do that with nothing but ever challenging roadblocks being constantly placed in front of me?

eh, and here I thought my frustration with DA2 and this new direction the DA franchise is headed in has long ago burned itself out... Posted Image

Because there is none.

Orc: Slim face/neck, pointy long ears, nose
Hurlock: Huge neck, round face, no ears, no nose.

Whereas the DA2 Genlock is identical to a LotR Mountain Troll.

It's astounding how lost you are.

Why do you think Bioware changed the darkspawns appearance in the first place?

And now instead of looking like LoTR carbon copies, they look like Skeletor's inbred cousins.

Change for the sake of change.

DA2 should have been a new IP, because it sure as hell isn't Dragon Age.

The lore hasn't been butchered though. Its merely been adhered too as per the codex. (whereas it wasn't adhered to at all in Origins). However, some don't like the look of the creature in question, which is fair enough.

But no rules have been broken.
