*ok so below is my problem and here's the fix, i hope. after spending over an hour with the techs at ea he's found that i need to update the redistributor - http://www.microsoft...lang=en&id=5555
after i clean everything out and reinstall it all i'll let you know if it works!*

ok so i'm a pc noob, after years of Sony dedication i realised they're shafting us all so i sold everything and upgraded my pc, so go easy i'm new to pc gaming and am pretty unfamiliar with alot of what's going on inside it right now. specs are:

Dual Core AMD X2 245 running at 3.1Ghz
4G DDR3 1333 CL7
SATA 500G
MSI N460GTX HAWK
XP 32Bit SP3

I've got an EA Value copy of Mass effect, new and legit and after the installer crapping out and following the instructions i've found on here I updated to the 1.02 Patch and am now getting this as soon as I launch:

General Protection Fault
History: Address = 0x1ea4b (filename not found)

There's alot of the GPF on here, seems mostly it's a driver problem, mine are all newly updated and the system looks ok. Have I forgot to copy something? I've spent the last few hours manually installing and then updating and am completely lost as to what to do next. I'm a huge RPG fan, i've allready gone out and got the Crysis series, Farcry, Witcher, Metro, Dragon Age, Fear, Dead Space,  I even have the Limited ed. Mass effect 2 all just sitting waiting as Mass Effect is the main reason for going PC, so yeah pretty down at the moment.

AMD CPU's are reknowned for having slightly different clock speeds in their cores, and this can cause issues with ME. You might need to set your CPU affinity to single core to get the game running reliably.

yeah new update:
so the file is included in the install but because of the manual install i didn't have it, but it wasn't the magic fix. all re-installed and no fix. affinity changed to single cpu but no difference. this is really getting me down. not only do i want to play through the whole story, run my save into Mass Effect 2 and onto 3 etc. but i've spent all day on this, literally like 7 hours of my life. it just doesn't make any sense?

What AntiVirus software are you running? Kapersky AV 2010/2011 have been known to cause similar problems with any games that run on the Unreal 3 engine. If you do have Kapersky, get rid of it and try either Avast or Comodo if you want a free AV product.
If you are running another form of AV, then try firing up ME2 and see if you still get GPFs. They both run on the same engine, with ME2 being tweaked and fine tuned, it might help us narrow down the cause of the problem.

This error messege comes up a lot when somebody tries to use a card that is below requirements or an on board graphics chip. Unfortunately the OP didn't specify what graphics card they have if any so it's impossible to tell if that is the problem.

Edit: They did nevermind that. it was just written in a weird way. You mentioned you have newly updated drivers have you tried using some older drivers to see if it solves the problem?

i was told my gtx460 won't run on the older drivers? like 195/197? i think those are what most people are going back to try out but yeah, i was told in another forum it wouldn't take the old ones.
as for AV i'm running Avast, but that's a good idea Bog, i've got Mass Effect 2 here so i'll chuck it on and run it through now and see what I can see.

could it be a problem with the game picking up the old onboard? in config it's stating the 460 as the GPU though? one thing is that it's not during play at all, it's at the first screen just after the publishers etc. where it asks for you to press any key, as soon as i do it freezes. i could only find a couple of people with the same thing, most GPF's were during play in somewhere specific and the logs were huge.

Try the 258.96 drivers if they're compatible.

The 258.96 are the oldest revision drivers that are listed as being compatible with the GTX460. They also happen to be the "newest" drivers that we tend to agree are still fully compatible with ME and ME2.

Could be worth a shot, but also let us know how ME2 runs on your system just as a comparison.

hey thanx for any help and suggestions by the way, i'm a week in and frustrated as but any help is really appreciated. so update goes as this:

-installed ME
-install failed, forum search as to why, common problem with EA Value Games
-found Bioware manual install instructions and manually installed
-configure crashing, forum search as to why
-full updating of system, apart from full OS reinstall
-both patches downloaded and installed along with manual reinstall of ME
-configure working and game crashes on start screen with GPF, forum search as to why
-again full system update before full manual reinstall of ME
-firewall and AV test, disabling has no affect
-'test' GPU with RE5, no problems
-test with Batman Arkham Asylum, major random freezing, bugging and crashing, forum search as to why. fault found to be Windows 'updating' audio hardware with old drivers, newer driver pack found and installed, Batman works 100%
-retest of RE5, no problems
-move on to Left 4 Dead 2 test, game freezes and crashes.
-retest and update of all drivers
-after fully uninstalling and reinstalling Steam and L4D2 fault found to be with aVast! latest update, which needs to be disabled for steam to run
-all 3 games tested and running fine, L4D2 needs aVast! disabled to run, Steam and Valve contacted for an update patch
-manual reinstall of ME fails, disk bad and checked with Nero, major bad sectors and unable to use
-EA contacted, within 90 day warranty, vender contacted for replacement, currently waiting on response
-Dead Space installed, no problems
-game fails, freezes on boot up
-move onto installing ME2, no problems
-game is fine, runs perfectly and got stuck for 2 hours absolutely riveted to the game, it's everything i had hoped for and now i'm even more determined to get ME working.

ok so yeah, all this has taken over a week so far. i've done everything anyone's suggested and still no fix. the last update i got from EA(who have actually been really quick and pretty cool to deal with) i haven't been able to implement as the disk is bad now, though the last 2 didn't work. my copy of Dead Space is new also, but it's an EA Value Games disk too and now i'm thinking this is too much of a coincidence. i haven't investigated this at all yet, now forum searching or contacting as i got sucked into ME2, but this is too much to ignore. main problem being now i have to wait a couple of weeks for a new copy of ME to turn up to try anything there.

About the only other advice I can give at this stage is to pester EA support about obtaining a code so you can download ME1 via their Origins download service. Some of the reps will plead ignorqance, but others will do it for you. Just perservere until you get a rep who agrees.

We have an EA rep on these forums who suggest as much in this posting.

If you have your code from the 3rd party retailer, you can try to add the code to Origin (which can be downloaded at http://store.origin.com/eadm ), login with your BioWare account information and press the Cog/Gear near the top. You should see Redeem Game Code.
Take the serial code you received from the 3rd party retailer and input it in the box and press Apply. It should create a digital download of the game that you will be able to download and install.

If you have issues with the code (Code invalid/In Use) please select "Contact Us" from the menu on the left side of your screen when you login at http://support.ea.com.

Once the agent verifies your account, they will work to get this resolved and get you into the game.
