So far, we know that the Protheans were wiped out violently, and Sovereign was planning the same with us, but I wonder if any cultures made contact with the current Sovereign equivalent of their cycle and invited the Reapers in for dinner, so to speak.
We have already seen an example of this with the Heretic Geth. Even though signs indicate that Geth are largely immune to Indoctrination, due to their nature and goals, they found Sovereign's offer of ascension to Reaper status as a desirable shortcut to their end of creating the unified Geth construct that Legion mentions.
The current dominant species of the galaxy share behavioral evolutionary paterns primarily with earths mamilian and avian families, in that they are socially organized, but with individuals competeing within the population for status and resources. This is not the only possible path of evolution to sapience, however. As seen with the Rachni, some species have evolved with hive-based social behaviors where the individual is less relevant and competition is non-existant.
My speculation is that technologically advanced species with a hive-mentality would tend toward the kind of singularity that the Reapers represent even before making contact with the Reapers. The Reapers might then make peaceful contact through their vanguard in order to usher in the species ascension in a streamlined manner.
This line of thinking also lends to the idea that the Rachni were under the influence of Sovereign during the Rachni Wars, and were seeking to gain control of the Citadel so that the Reapers could purge the other species and grant the Rachni ascension to Reaper status. However, they may not have necessarily been primarily influence indoctrination, and were operating with full knowledge of what they were doing.
Are any of the Reapers Vulunteers?

Its likely that because they are a hive mind(like the geth) that they would be easier to control/manipulate.
If you save the rachni in ME1 then you come across an asari on illium that has come in contact with the rachni tells you that the rachni are not an aggressive race and that there war with the galaxy was not of there choice. She says that something soured the songs of there mothers(they were indoctrinated). Sovereign used the rachni to kill off all of the other races of the galaxy even before the reaper invasion...this means that they were just tools and where not going to ascend into reapers(those that are indoctrinated will be killed). The only race worthy of ascending in the whole galaxy was the humans. The geth and the rachni are both hive mind races (more so the geth then rachni) so it might be easier to use them insted of a non hive mind race...at least thats what I would do if I was a reaper (look for the path of least resistance) but Iam not.
