You want to use the DEX Hotfix first of all. After that:

1. STR 20
2. CUN 22 (some have said 26 for max effective stealth but some bosses resist stealth regardless)
3. DEX as high as possible
4. WIL/CON as needed
5. All Archery Talents
6. All Stealth Talents
7. Avoid Lethality
8. Spec Bard/Ranger if you feel like dealing with the bad pet interface, otherwise Bard/Duelist
9. Use shortbows ONLY (to take advantage of the DEX hotfix)

How can I tell if the Dex Hotfix is working? The instructions say you might have to change the install location, but I don't see a difference either way yet.

Something everyone else is forgetting about having high cunning is the bonus to bard songs (Song of Courage) and armor pen. Bows have relatively low armor pen compared to melee rogues/archers. So against anything with armor your DPS starts to be crap.

Wow, nice of bioware to put in a DEX hotfix after I complete my archer playthrough (it was my first).

Shortbows would have been good for that run for using pure DEX now :).

Look at a bow in your inventory.  If it says "Attack: 5" somewhere in its stats, the hotfix is working.

Every point in dex gives 1 damage, cunning is only 0.14 armor penetration per point (and 0.5 damage). Better to stack damage and overpower the armor I think.

Dendybar, you can tell if the dex hotfix working because in the tooltip for the bow it will say attack: +5 or something like that.

Im not using the hotfix as i think they will still change something before the official patch.

So in regards to the non hotfix game, i find archers to be a support class. There is no way you will beat a dual-wield damage as bows shoot too slow and their abilities take too long to actually shoot.

But as support with a short duration stun shot, debuff shot etc they are ok. They have the occasional DPS ability which are really support (slaying pretty much killing 1 mob).

Short bows....well there arent many top end special short bows ive found, buy plenty of long bows.

True, if your dead set on using a shortbow this could bebetter.

However if you use a longbow, its .5 from Dex and .5 from cun and .14 armor pen. So cunning wins out (never mind the small bonus from Song of Courage). I'm not saying Dex should be ignored, but that Cunning shouldn't be ignored.

On a side note, the best bow I've found is Falon Dir's Reach that can be found in the Ruin Dragons stash. This is a longbow.

The top three bows I've found are Mage Eye, Falon Dir's Reach, and Leli's companion bow. Mage Eye is much better if you're maxed and roll with a champion and have a bard with high cunning and dex.

With a shortbow you will do extra damage I think, if each dex over 10 is +1 damage?

If you had 20 str, 45 dex, 30 cun, it would be (35) from dex + (10) from cun + (2.8) armor piercing = 47.8 extra dmg.

With the same amount of stat points, say 20 str, 30 dex, 45 cun, you'd do (10) from dex + (17.5) from cun + (4.9) armor piercing = 32.4 extra damage.

I think longbows actually get 0.55 damage per dex or str and not 0.5 damage, that would add 3 more damage but the shortbows still have over 10 more bonus damage (I think). The longbow user would have less attack, I'm ignoring that though.

Both could unlock any lock and have max stealth. Shortbows also shoot faster I think. You could skip lethality with shortbows too, you'd only lose 4 damage. Shortbows are even better if you follow the build below and have someone else for lockpicking. Longbows are better for high cunning rogues with lethality. Personally, I'm planning on using a shortbow, and having Leliana to pick locks. That way I can keep my cun at 22, and both me and Leliana will have archery maxed out sooner, since I'll skip lockpicking and she'll skip stealth.

Just a heads up, I'm not sure if i messed anything up in my math, I think it should make sense though. Someone tell me if I blew it lol. :bandit:

I disagree.  Cunning does not add to accuracy and thus should be ignored as much as possible.  Accuracy, to a large extent, is more preferable than large damage numbers.
If the archer who focuses entirely upon dexterity is landing 4/5 shots and the archer with split focus is landing closer to 3/5 shots, then the more innaccurate archer would need to deal an additional 20% damage to break even in this fuzzy-logic, hypothetical scenario.  Just an example.

Someone confirm this - the dexterity hotfix seems to mess up the tooltip for Shale's crystals. It no longer gives me damage/armor numbers. Or is it just me?

it definitely messes up shale's crystals - not just in the tooltip either. The crystals appear to give you negative bonuses to armor and don't do anything for damage when equipped and if find first find shale with the dex hotfix installed her AC gets borked somehow due to the crystal that she starts with messing up her base stats - it shows up as positive only with a crystal installed but 0 without it (colored red to indicate it is actually lower than 0 I think). The real problem here is if you have the fix installed the first time you enter the village area with shale - her character stats appear to be generated then, probably to base them on your party level, and having the borked crystal in her armor slot permanent breaks her AC stat even if you remove the dex fix.

Since the hotfix replaces the equipment list I suspect that the it doesn't include the stats for shale's crystals, since they are in a DLC module instead of the base game.

I noticed it messed shale up too. I wasn't going to use her anyways, but that kinda sucks.

Oh and quick question while im talking about the hotfix. Do I have to uninstall it if I go get the 1.01b patch? Or does it not matter. I have 1.01 still I think, heh
