No way in this earth is Kojima, Halo, ND, or Betthesda have better writing in their games.

I might give you Bethesda because of Oblivion and Fallout 3,  but I think you are biased.

Also, Mech Warrior.  Awesome games, awesome books.

Bethesda's never had good writing in their games all the way back to Daggerfall, but sandbox/open world don't need good writing. As for Mechwarrior, doesn't count as the video games are actually a spin off of the TT strategy game. Hell, I remember the Mech Warrior game centers with the cockpits and all. I actually kinda miss those.

Kahlee Sanders, the most boring Mary Sue ever.

I really hope she won't be in ME3.

I saw the first page of the article, and decided I want to read everything for myself. I'm not sure if this has been asked since I skipped most of the comments to avoid spoilers, but can anyone give me a timeline/order to read the books and comics in?

Chronological order:

Mass Effect: Evolution
Mass Effect: Revelation (prologue takes place before Evolution, remainder takes place 8 years later)
Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect: Incursion
Mass Effect 2 opening sequence
Mass Effect: Ascension -> Mass Effect: Redemption
Remainder of Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect: Retribution
Mass Effect: Inquisition -> Mass Effect: Deception -> Mass Efffect: Invasion
Mass Effect 3

Wow, thanks. I didn't expect someone to give me such a comprehensive list. :)

So what we learned is

1. Whatever you choose in the end of ME1, we get Udina, that jerk. Thanks for the illusion of choice!

2. Cerberus (and sometimes the alliance) screws up more things for humanity and the galaxy than all the bad races of the galaxy put together, yes even more than those nasty batarians.

3. The Mary Sue from the novels named Kahlee Sanders might actually be seen in the 3rd game, maybe??

4. There is this uber racist, waste of skin human called Kai Leng we can put out of his misery in ME3.

We also learn

There are some disgruntled RPGeeks who resent the attempts to create a complex mythology with stories to tell throughout multiple forms of media. They egomaniacally insist that the ME universe start and stop for their precious avatars.

The FemShep legion have an annoying tendency to "force the issue", even if their VG journalists who are supposed to  have an air of unbiased neutrality.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that "Mass Effect" was not simply referring to the plot device that makes the universe go 'round, but also to the "massive effect" player choice would have on the storyline. Given this, it seems fair for players to be disgruntled if those choices are undermined.

'Kahlee Sanders is the (other) most important human in the galaxy."

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.

And to;
"Tali could tell you about how she helped save the Quarian flotilla from
Cerberus. The Turians respect her brashness and intelligence. The
Salarians would love to see her research. Her friend and one-time
partner Hendel may very well have trained in the use of his biotic
powers alongside Kaidan. She has stood up to the Illusive Man's top
agents, and taken no sh*t from Aria T'Loak, powerful biotics, krogan
battlemasters, and more. So much for not fighting, eh?"

Great, a f*cking Mary Sue, just what we need. :/ My Shep will put a bullet in her head if they ever met.
But I so lol'd at the fact she's a 'natural blonde' which is apparently an oh so rare colour in the ME universe.

Have you been reading the Mass Effect novels or the Mass Effect comics from Dark Horse? If not, you are missing out on KEY information all Mass Effect fans should know.

Clearly it was the right choice to exclude that information from the games themselves.

No, it's that you can't compltely follow the story told in Medium A because they keep trying to sell you craptastic garbage in Mediums B through F.

I second that.  Kahlee sounds like a really bad fanfic character.  What would inspire someone like Drew to write such an obvious trope cyborg?  Male guilt?  She sounds extra "Whedon-y"

Jiminy Cricket, the Mass Effect "expanded universe" sounds as bad as the Star Wars crap featured in countless books and comics - ad infinitum, ad nauseum.  Every little side character gets their own book or series of books detailing (exhaustively) their fantastic adventures on a planet no-one will hear about again involving a race/faction no-one will hear about again.  It's horrible, and I feel bad for the trees felled to produce paper for such epic yarns.

Udina is NOT the councilor, damn it!  In the books, because literature is a different medium than games, the author had to make a choice, and he chose Udina.  That should have no effect whatsoever on Mass Effect 3.

Then again, it probably doesn't matter much, considering how little the Citadel Council has actually done over the course of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.  They're as powerful as the U.N., it would seem.  In other words, they're kind of a joke.

lol.. I like how you guys are all freaking out about the lack of choice being negated by a BOOK. Game "canon" takes precedent over the books. The books also had Shepard keep the Collector Base. Does that mean it's canon?

Besides... ME3 starts right as the Reapers invade. I doubt it would really matter.

I like the background information but Udina being the "canon" councilor is crap. I like all the cool back stories and side plots but Udina as Councilor? They are good reads from what I read but still Udina...

"SPOILER ALERT!"

They said that at the beginning of ME3 Anderson decides to stay on Earth- so whatever Council choices are involved later on will probably be very different if Udina is Councillor, assuming he isn't stuck on Earth too, since he will be with the other councillors

I think the 'journalist' that wrote the article could have used a bit of, I don't know, not MAKEING THEIR OPIONS CANNON. Very anti cerberus and pro, Sanders, whom I HATE in the books. So I disliked the tone of the article.

Err no, Anderson clearly resigns as Military Attache/Councillor (the author never categorically states which he is) in Retribution, which is set post ME2.

So yes, by ME3 he's not the Councillor or a Alliance Military Attache anymore.

IF the comics actually end up being canon for the primary medium, the video games.

just because they do things you don't like doesn't mean they are not cannon. I don't like Udina as councilor or the base still around either (although until the next mini comic I was able to dismiss this claim). Bioware does approve them after all. I would like some What-If books tho like say Shep does die at the end of ME2 and what they would do in ME3 without him. I'm probably the only one who would read it though lol.
