I have to disagree with that. For every good western cartoon you can name, I can name 2 good Japanese cartoons. Here's a start:
Ghost in The Shell, One Piece, Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk and Trigun (though the Trigun anime is not as good as the manga).
These names above are merely the names of series. If I'm allowed to name films than I can add wayyyyyyyyy more names to the list. I'm also nice enough to link each and every name that I just listed to a trailer or short clip of named anime. Ain't I nice?
To be really 100% honest, I think we both exaggerated in the past. Maybe I need to be more open-minded about modern western cartoons and you need to be more open-minded about Japanese cartoons.
Didn't you forget Samurai Champloo?
