I agree if Mass Effect was made into a super deformed anime style, with the plot being rewritten to appeal to nerdy Japanese tastes and such ,it'd be bad.

But this just sounds like like a ME based animated film, made by a Japanese animation studio but scripted by people who know what their doing. No real harm done.

There are good animes, there are bad animes; there are good western cartoon, there are bad western cartoons. From the sound of it, it's just not your thing, but there are plenty of great anime out there. I haven't watched much anime recently - much televison in general, really - so I'm not the best judge on current stuff. But I'm betting you're not, either.

They said that there would be a live action film and an animated movie, if I recall.  "Animated" does not necessarily mean "animé."  Animated means either western-style (as in the Disney renaissance of the 90s), computer generated (as in Resident Evil: Degeneration), or yes, animé.  Don't jump to conclusions.

i just hope mass effect's story doesnt get animefied if it does get turned into an anime. Meet John Shepard, 17, all he wanted was to have a normal highschool life until a childhood friend bumps into him blahblahblah.

It's anime, so it would be more like "Meet John Shepard, 29, he survived the massacre on Akuze because he jumped 40 feet over a Thresher Maw whilst firing his assault rifle with his buttcheeks at 90 mph. He's moved on but the memories are so fresh they will haunt him forever, alas, woe, woe is John." Blah Blah Blah, dribble dribble, enter Ashley, Liara and Tali with double D boobs, drama, drama, yap yap dribble dribble overdone space battle with sovereign and Shepard vs Saren the end.

Wow, that's a very narrow view you've got there. It's like saying the only way Mass Effect can work in America is by giving Shepard a spunky talking dog sidekick, having him sing musical numbers and dance, and shoehorning in a moral message at the last moment.

what im trying to say is, anime storylines are crap. the vast majority of them are crap. name 1 good anime show thats come out this year. thats right, you cant, because anime storylines are generally crap.

Look at my post. I included several good examples. There is also anything made by Satoshi Kon - Paranoia Agent, Paprika, Perfect Blue etc. etc. (he was going to be releasing a movie this year, but passed away)

It depends on the anime and the artistic direction they go in.
Most people assume (when they hear the word "anime") that the characters are going to have large eyes, the dialog is going to be awkward or the tone will be poorly executed, and that everyone has to wear cat ears. etc. etc. When that isn't the case. There are plenty of good examples of anime that could fit the Mass Effect world.

Also, Bioware used the first Final Fantasy movie as inspiration for the artistic direction they went in. Then you have anime like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Blue Submarine No. 6 and Tekkonkinkreet which proves that things like sci-fi / cyberpunk can be executed elegantly.

If Halo Legends is anything to go by, all the writing will be handled by Bioware and the Japanese will handle the actually animation and local dubbing. That said, there's no guarantee that the writing will be any good even if it's by Bioware, given how all the other non-game stuff sucks in that department.

They just signed up 3 hours ago, then posted this thread. Either they're a troll - or extremely ignorant. Especially considering Mass Effect was based on a Japanese CGI movie.

That's usually the case

Funfact: That's why I mentioned Satoshi Kon and the movie "Dream Machine". Tekkonkinkreet also came out fairly recently. (Not within this year. A year or two ago)

either ways, i dont trust a japanese anime studio being in charge of a script. I hope Bioware writes the story.

The only good anime was the 90's anime. Or maybe that's just nostalgia talking...either way, I'm not a big fan of giving Mass Effect the anime treatment. However, I'll keep an open mind about it and hope it doesn't turn out to be another Halo: Legends failure.

That's the only problem, really. But considering how decent/interesting a lot of the comic books and novels seem, I'm not that worried.

I hope bioware keeps a closer eye on this than microsoft and bungie did on halo legends. "wraith drives out of phantom, spartan fights dinosaur.....wtf!(pull out gun shoot self in head)". the people making halo legends did absolutly no reasearch on the halo universe and damn near ruined it . an event like this could be catastrophic for mass effect due to its storie heavy qualities.

Sigh. Okay. For you and Hellhound's sake. I'm going to make a list of good anime that has come out in the past few years.

- Paranoia Agent (2004)
- Paprika (2006)
- Anohana (2011) (Not as action-y as most, but its really emotionally intense and has amazing character development)
- Tekkonkinkreet (2006)
- Gosick (2011) (A murder mystery type show. Very different)

And then you have outrageous stuff like Toradora which is set in a stereotypical highschool setting - but the animators are amazing.

I'd put more but I've lost motivation. :0

No it doesn't. But its good for the type of audience it appeals to. It is not a good example of what I would want Mass Effect to be like - obviously.

Edit: Same as Anohana. Its focused on character development, nostalgia and some sociopolitical/socioeconomical issues.

Satoshi's work was mainly inspired by his fight with cancer.

maybe it is the nostalgia talking, but it seems like japanese writers see cliches as a GOOD thing instead of limitations to be overcome.

It's not the writers, but the studios. There have been some pretty well written shows in the past few seasons, such as Tiger and Bunny and Steins;Gate, both fairly low budget and little studio interference.

Pretty sure it's already been confirmed. I actually highly anticipate it. I used to be a huge anime fan, but not so much anymore. I did like the Halo Legends anime though.

CGI films are not what i would class as anime. Unless your defining anime as any kind of Japanese animation in which case this is a pretty stupid discussion since we're talking in far too broad terms. I personally don't like the anime style and can't see it fitting with the mass effect universe.

Mass effect has a distinctly western feel to me, i don't know how well it could be conveyed in a Japanese style. I'd much rather see a decent cgi than an overstylised anime fan service for the hordes of weaboos who infest the internet.

I'll agree with you on Steins;Gate - but I have no respect for Tiger and Bunny at ALL. At first I assumed it was a jab at product placement in the industry, but its definitely walking that line a little bit too close in favor of product placement.
