CGI films are not what i would class as anime. Unless your defining anime as any kind of Japanese animation in which case this is a pretty stupid discussion since we're talking in far too broad terms. I personally don't like the anime style and can't see it fitting with the mass effect universe.

Mass effect has a distinctly western feel to me, i don't know how well it could be conveyed in a Japanese style. I'd much rather see a decent cgi than an overstylised anime fan service for the hordes of weaboos who infest the internet.

So you don't consider Final Fantasy anime?

Its cgi animation. It has concepts in it that are directly related to a specific culture/artistic movement. The Final Fantasy: Spirits Within movie has a LOT of stylistic elements that are similar to Japanese anime from the 90ies and 80ies.

Just because mainstream industry has changed (and square) to focus on a more stylistic approach (colorful hair, larger eyes etc.) does NOT mean that the requirements are any different. There are a lot of examples of different stylistic approaches to anime.

Also, a lot of Mass Effects themes are Western. I will agree with you there. It is about an underdog that is overthrowing a larger power in order to gain their freedom.

Japanese animation often focuses on more environmental issues/issues in a work force.

The film was intened to be largely photorealistic. Photorealism isn't a characteristic i would ascoicate with anime. Maybe the plot nuances and characters were in keeping with anime but i assumed the storyline concept and character sculpting would be similar to other mass effect media. However i guess outside of sheppards story a different approach could work. I guess i will just have to judge the film when it comes out.

The storyline has nothing to do with Mass Effect. They mainly based the atmosphere and artistic style off of it. And while you may not see it, I do. Primarily the colors, the ships, the suits of armor, and most of the atmosphere. Before Spirits Within, there were no games in western society that even came close to that level of presentation in a FPS, RPG or any of the sort. That artistic style is / was EXTREMELY Japanese. Times have changed with all the Halos and the Killzones and the Mass Effects.

Edit: I apologize not all of these are hyperlinked. I'll work on that. I hate this forum's format.

Sorry i constructed that sentence poorly. edited it now so it makes more sense. I'm no expect on anime but i've never seen an anime that's close to Spirits within interms of photorealism. To me that makes a bigger difference than the colour pallet.

No I understood what you meant. :x My whole stance on this subject is a hopeful one. I HOPE that they assign an artist that is able to maintain the sci-fi atmosphere in an anime world. I also hope that (because of cultural differences) that the writers will be able to understand the motives behind the story.
I'm just trying to prove that Mass Effect does draw its atmosphere from an Eastern art style, and that not all "anime" is the same for the exception of subtle stylistic approaches that are inspired by their culture.
Also, watch the movie "Ghost in the Shell: 2". They use CGI and anime in different scenes to make photo realistic images

Example of the Ghost in the Shell CGI.

But for all I know they'll hire the same guy who did the Haruhi series and I'll cry 10,000 tears for old-otakus everywhere who were hoping for anime to finally return to its respective form. A medium that used mechs and sci-fi to comment on sociopolitical issues.

Not one about high school girls and boobs.

*Ahem*
That isn't beautifully made. It looks god-awful.
I will also add that Ghibli is even worse, as they make mind-numbingly stupid films where the characters look like ambulatory tumors.

I wouldn't mind a fully CG anime like "Final Flight of the Osiris" or "Advent Children" though.

... Okay, if Square Enix signed up then I would never stop giggling.

As for good anime, Eden of the East (2009) was pretty awesome. Art was mediocre, but the premise was interesting.

Ugh, I hope you're kidding and/or trolling, else I really feel sorry for your bad taste and ignorance about art.

You complain about Studio Ghibli's "mind-numbingly stupid films where the characters look like ambulatory tumors" yet you like Final Fantasy Advent Children? LOLOLOLOLOL! Sorry but that's just stupid.

Final Fantasy Advent Children has a really boring script, the characters are poorly written and their voice-actors are god-awful (especially the English voice-actors). All characters are incredibly cliché.

I think Final Fantasy Advent Children is REALLY mind-numbingly stupid where the characters look even WORSE than ambolatory tumors.

Seriously, look at this and tell me he doesn't look INCREDIBLY CLICHÉ and god-awfully stupid:

UGH! The gayness!

Now tell me sir, which Studio Ghibli films have you seen yourself and what where your complaints about the script and characters?

As long as the movie has flying unicorns with rocket launchers and horns that shoot pixie dust out, I will watch it.

Friends have shown me a lot of different anime series and 99% of it seems to be complete garbage. That said, 99% of *anything* tends to be complete garbage, including video games and Western animation. The stereotypical anime style shared by most of them definitely doesn't do it for me, however.

It was either that or END OF EVANGELION. I don't think the average BSN poster is ready for that.

The whole anime bit is interesting, since the end of ME2 bears an uncanny resemblance to Evangelion.

Unless you saw an ending that was different from the one I saw it was one of the worst endings to any anime I have ever seen aside from maybe the ending to Trigun.
