No, sorry. I did find that we are not the only discontent ones, however.

Go to Control Panel and try turning your audio hardware acceleration down a notch or two.
This fix worked with an old game I used to play...I think it was Divine Divinity. At least its worth a go

Does windows 7 have audio hardware acceleration? I can't find it anywhere. I know where the display hardware accelerator is, but it's greyed out.

Ah... found this, second post was most informative. Don't know what all this means for DA, though.

Update: no more sound crackling during stealth once I disabled PhysX acceleration on my Nvidia card (had flickering issues).
Both graphics and sound issues resolved.

Damn, I really hate this. Nothing works at all, even a temporary fix... Well, there's the "disable the sound effect" but the fights looks kind of... Weird xD
You only hear the characters, so funny !
But I want the effect...

Well, all is not unicorns and rainbows. Random (i.e. haven't figured out what causes it) scratching jumping into inventory once or twice. Hopped to Windowed mode and back fixed it, but very annoying.
Static/scratching from speakers, voices sound far away.

Could the problem be caused by the CPU being overheated?

I very much doubt it when this many people are having the problem. In addition when overheating happens the computer shuts down, it doesn't start stuttering.

Microsoft stripped ALL sound HW acelleration out of Vista and Win 7. That broke a lot of older win xp games. all newer games must use the CPU to handle sound effects OR OpenAL if they wish to use HW accelerated sound.
As far as I can tell DAO has no HW accell sound support and simply uses the CPU to handle all the sound and will use a SB or on board card just a a device to output 2.0, 5.1, or 7.1 sound

So, switching to 2 speakers kinda fixed the crackling sound. But the gameplay is still messed up (Party members and enemies abilities are delayed and most of the time they stand still and do nothing).

I'm not sure about Audigy, but there are known sound (crackling, etc.) issues with older SB X-Fi cards and drivers for Windows Vista/7. I have an older X-Fi Extreme Gamer card and started having sound issues after upgrading to Windows 7 from XP. In DA:O the sound would sometimes fade in and out during dialogues. It wasn't specific to DA:O since it also happened when watching streaming video from other sites. I was using the latest Win 7 drivers from Creative for X-Fi cards.
I fixed the problem by using Driver Sweeper to completely remove remnants of the Creative drivers (after uninstalling them using Device Manager) and then installing the third party Creative X-Fi drivers AuzenUAA Pack 1.0. Now I don't have any sound issues.
I hope this helps others.

Nope, still the same.
For me, it really appears from nowhere. One day it was perfectly fine, as the 40-50 hours of playing before, and then POP ! And I really did not a thing !

Exact same circumstances for me. If I had sound issues as soon as the game had started up I would suspect my drivers, but I didn't. I'm pretty sure this is a game issue and we're going to have to wait on a patch, regardless of how much we would love to have our own solution, we've tried pretty much everything it seems.
The people having the problem have both diverse PC systems and OS. So far I have seen people in XP, Vista, and W7 having the problem as well as people with various dedicated cards and on-board cards.
It seems like we're a small group of people with the problem but we're pretty diverse....so yeah, wait for a patch seems like our only option.
To that end I have to go pray at my Bioware Altar.

Yep. We'll have to wait, that's pretty much what I thought. Still, I want to try another thing: create another character, to see if the problem remains with that characters, and if it appears after 40-50 hours too. If it does that, then it's really weird xD
Wait for me, let's go pray together!
