Yeah, same problem here.

Turing off sound effects has the game running back to normal fps and no sound stuttering... but the game sure is odd to play when a lightning blast is as quiet as a mouse farting.

I started to notice crackling sound only after I updated my video card drivers. I have not revered back on an older driver, but perhaps this is the problem? I can quit the game and restart, and all it fine. Also, I only notice the crackling sound to appear after I save the game. It's fine previous to any saves.

Have a peek at suggestions here and in the comments.

Change your audio format to 24-bit 44100Hz which will fix the chipmunk noise only, but as for the slow motion crackling sounds what I did was unplig my bluetooth mouse and keyboard and now everything can be run on high and play very smooth, also the cut scenes run perfect. I wish there was a way to fix without having to unplug my mouse everytime but it works for now, and to play I just use an xbox contorller.

Hope this helps for some of you.

I was running on drivers supplied by windows update, 182.24, until 2 days ago when I updated to 186.18. An audio issue appeared after installing 186.18. Sound is crackling in left 4 dead, prototype, even in bink video player. Haven't tested other games. Tried 185.85 too, issue persists. Downgraded back to 182.50, also no go. Issue stops when downgrading back to 182.24.

I have an DFI nforce 680i LT motherboard with a Karajan HD onboard audio module and Zotac's 8800 GTX.

As you see the problem can be almost anything...

Good catch with the Bitdefender, I usually disable antivirus programs when playing games without thinking about it, since they usually degrade performance, then turn em back on. Also if you have Comodo firewall, choose disable Defence+ go into configuration and check disable the defence+ permanently then reboot. Defence+ has been known to cause problems with other games. You can keep the firewall running though.
