Zevran's chastity belt? Fo realz? ;)

Fear not gentle lady for I know a locksmith
To his shop we will go, on his door we will knock
And try to avail us of his technical knowledge
And see if he's able to unpick your lock
Unpick your lock nonie nonie, unpick your lock nonie nonie
See if he's able to unpick your lock

Alas sir and madam, to help I'm unable
My technical knowledge is to no avail
I can't find the secret to your combination
For the cunning old bastard has fitted a Yale
Fitted a Yale nonie nonie, fitted a Yale nonie none
The cunning old bastard has fitted a Yale

Not mine, but it always comes to mind immediately in these cases... :)  (Whole thing here.)

Opening up a contest for a fan anthology posted online, though...from my perspective, this is the best of both worlds. There's no real publishing cost (just space on their servers for a time). The kicker is that it takes a hell of a lot more time and effort to judge stories than artwork, so that's still an investment they'd have to make.

That was my feeling...or even a print one.  (I mean, it depends and all, but they probably could sell a reasonable number.)  It might be a reasonable marketing device, would engage fans, and would cost very little.  (Just the time of the poor person stuck reading the slush pile and whatever prizes they chose to give out.)  It would be an investment, but it could definitely be cool if they chose to make it.

And I could see them making whatever rules they wanted.  I could see the point for and against using characters from the game.  But even if they disallowed pre-existing characters, there's a lot that writers could do with the world. I'd be interested in seeing it.  (And similar things for Mass Effect, NWN, KOTOR, etc. etc.)

Oh. I cannot say "no" to a competition. It's pathological. (And I won one of the DLCs in the podcast for my letter about Leliana, Shale and red shoes!)

I really like the idea of the fanart showcase, but agree that it would be cool for us writers to showcase our talents and lavish love on the game too. I'm a bit surprised the DA writers (that I'm aware of mentioning it) don't enjoy, at least, the idea of fanfic, or pieces inspired by their game. Writing is one of those kinds of communities where everyone learns from everyone, in my experience, and a little encouragement is always nice.

Without trying to stifle the boundless creativity that is DA fanfic, I wonder if some kind of competition/showcase for this might work better if it was carefully structured so that it doesn't mess too much with lore. Until DA2 came along, anyway, the idea of Leliana sending a letter to the Warden was a good one. Also, I tried my hand at some short pieces revolving around epilogues for "less important" characters, like Connor. That kind of stuff.

If it was based around a theme, and kept to a word limit, it might be a really interesting exercise. If entries were short, maybe "official involvement" might be more likely. Or we can stop crying into our porridge and do it ourselves. (Or maybe someone should try to talk the DA Podcast team into doing it again.)

There is a $10 DAII DLC being released soon, you know. (PS. Did the store donate the DLCs last time?)

I'm not sure if that's universally true, but I would totally welcome an electronic contest.  I  mean, really anything would be pretty awesome, I think!

I strongly doubt Bioware will sponsor such. If you wish to ask them, I will add my voice to the inquiry.

There's no reason you couldn't start a contest of your own. Advertise here and on the livejournal communtiies, ff.net, AOOO and dreamwidth and you should get quite a lot of entries.

While a private contest is doable, and you might even be able to talk a prize out of Bioware for the winner(s), it'll simply never have the same prestige (for lack of a better word?) or potential audience as a contest sponsored directly by Bioware. And your stuff theoretically gets looked at by some sort of professional. That's probably what most entrants will be interested in when contributing.

That's my feeling, to be honest.  While a private contest/forum/whatever would be cool/interesting/fun to check out, it really wouldn't be the same.  (And there are private contests periodically from all sorts of different comms as well as collections of stories, etc. on ffnet.)

I could certainly try to throw one together if people were interested/cared.  But I completely agree that it wouldn't have the same level of excitement/enthusiasm.

Erm, can I ask, what's the point of an "anthology"? It's not like there is that much fan writing for this fandom to begin with and it's concentrated on a few sites. People can already sort through favorites lists and sort by character.

As for contests, not something I'm interested in, either. There are lots of prompt-fests out there already.

Basically throwing the fanfic writers an official bone, Addai. There's currently an art showcase for fan artists, promoted by Bioware. It's not a competition, just displaying the creative work of their 'awesome fans', and the artists get nothing except the joy of having their work hanging in a Bioware booth.

I'm sure people can view the pictures on DevArt or other sites as well, but that's not the point. :)
