Ok, so I'm sure that from the title you might be thinking "WTF? How are these things related?" And they're not.  I just have two questions (one on each topic) and I didn't feel like making two separate topics in an effort to get answers. So, sorry if anyone is disappointed that this isn't some kind of crazy conspiracy theory or something.

My first question, about Ardat-Yakshi, is whether a pure-blood mating produces Ardat-Yakshi (or rather, the chance of producing an ardat-yakshi) or if all pure-bloods carry it genetically?  Samara says "It only occurs in purebloods like myself.  Perhaps that is the root of the stigma regarding asari-exclusive pairings."  I have always understood this statement to mean that ardat-yakshi can only be produced if both parents are asari. However, if one parent is not asari, then an ardat-yakshi cannot be born.  Yet, I have recently seen others under the impression that any pure-blood (like Samara or Liara) would carry the gene for ardat-yakshi and even if the other parent was not asari, they could have an ardat-yakshi child.  I checked the wiki, but there was no clarification. I was curious if there is a source that says definitively, and if not, what people took Samara's statement to mean.  I feel like it clearly means both parents have to be asari, but maybe I'm in the minority. I dunno.

My other question, concerning the Blitz and Shepard's involvement, is what exactly Shepard was doing on Elysium (if War Hero).  I've seen several people give the backstory that Shepard was on leave and so was just kind of accidentally there.  However, I don't remember that being part of the description, nor do I remember any character implying such when talking about Shepard's actions during the Blitz.  I checked the wiki and only one page (the one on Elysium) says that Shepard was on leave, while the pages on the Blitz and Shepard's personal page do not say that.  So my question is: does it say anywhere in game that Shepard was on leave at the time?  Or is that just a fan-made assumption that has become popular belief?

So, if anyone had answers to either question I'd appreciate it. ^_^  When I couldn't find any definitive answers to these questions I thought I'd just ask to see what others thought.

Regarding the Blitz, the point about being on leave is in the Codex personal history:

Interestingly, it seems that those with a Colonist background were posted at Elysium, while those with Earthborn or Spacer background were on leave.

Ah! Thank you! That is really helpful! I will give it a read. I appreciate your help ^_^  I had no idea it would change either.  That is really interesting.

I do not believe that all pure-bloods necessarily carry a recessive Ardat-Yakshi gene. It has only ever been stated that AYs can only occur from a pure-blood pairing. It is not stated, to my knowledge, that non-pure-bloods cannot give birth to an AY via an asari-asari pairing.

Basically, it is possible that even non-pure-blooded Asari can carry the gene recessively, but the trait cannot be pronounced except in a pure-blooded Asari child.

Asari reproduction is an exceptional circumstance, genetically speaking, though, so who knows for certain. It may even be that every asari is a genetic carrier of the condition, but genetic requirements for the condition may been a combination of factors, rather than a single gene, which contributes to the conditions rarity.
