My vote goes to Guillermo del Toro... I know it won't happen, alas, but here is why I think it should be him:

1 - He is a H.P Lovecraft enthusiast, and the Reapers are very Lovecraftian monsters (incomprehensible evil residing in dark space)
2 - He is a visionary director - someone who has the potential to make an unforgettable movie (Pan's Labyrinth)
3 - He loves video games (is currently writing his own), and considers them an artform equal to cinema

To top it off, Guillermo will even be sitting at the same table as Casey Hudson at ComicCon Mass Effect movie reveal... Damn! So close yet so far...Posted Image

Not a chance del Toro will happen. But it ain't the end of the world. What we can realistically hope for is a quality director who proved himself in the superhero/comic book/action movies but also ain't a household name yet which would make him/her almost impossible to get for a video game adaptation.

Matthew Vaughn - X-Men: First class & Kick-As, both quality superhero movies
Kenneth Branagh - an acclaimed drama director who proved he knows how to make an action vehicle work with Thor
David Yates - another good drama director who proved himself in action with quality Potter movies (including the last one which is getting absolutely stellar reviews)

^NO!

If he were to take the same approach to Mass Effect as he did to The Rock, then I would tentatively suggest Michael Bay. The Rock was his best work in my opinion. Explosions, Sean Connery swearing his head off, an interesting villain, kick-ass action sequences, and a plot line that you just FELT. But I would only suggest him if the movie was about the FCW.

If it was about the main game, then I would efinitely suggest Vaughn or del Toro.

GdT is a good choice, but I would go with Alfonso Cauron. Children of Men. Awesome.

Alfonso's working on his new movie and will be busy with till like late 2012 at least so no chance for him, as amazing as he would be.

In all seriousness, I'd like the director to be a fan of the games, not just a hired gun. I'd hate for the universe to lose it's identity in just another alien invasion film.

Micheal Bay obviously.
We need Shia Lebouf shoehorned in.
Give him the main character that has nothing to do with anything.
Hell the fight against the reapers should be a side story and most of it will have to do with Shia moving out of his parents house and banging his hot girlfriend and complaining the whole time.
Oh we need serious action scenes with TONS of comedy relief someone with a name that means penis would be perfect and. Lets cut to the reapers arguing a lot and lets say Legion is there just to spew gay jokes all the time YES!
Yeah I'm joking but I honestly don't want a movie.

I definitely agree with you. It'd make sense to go with somebody who was familiar with the ME Universe, and who doesn't want to mess with it too much.

Cuaron is the most intriguing choice so far.
Keep in mind that the big reveal at comic-con is probably super early in the development process. Movie wont be out for quite some time(to my infinite sadness).
Children of Men showed a realistic, practical jump into the future that would keep ME from getting into a generic sci-fi feel and stay more believable. As far as it can be with aliens and whatnot, anyway.

Again people. As sad as it is for me as well, forget about Cuarón. He's filming his new movie right now and will be busy with it for the next 1,5 years or more.

Martin Scorsese.

No idea how BioWare/EA would pull that one off, but it's the only insurance we can get to make sure the movie isn't just mindless action.

guillermo del toro, sure, he may twist the storyline around a little but can you imagine how much he'd fetishize the geth and reapers?

Oh forreal. This is entertainment business. Instead of pointlessly complaining how the movie shouldn't happen at all which won't change anything, we should try to suggest the best people possible so whatever comes out of it doesn't stink at least.

I think Joseph Kosinski, the director of Tron: Legacy, should do it. He has shown with Tron: Legacy that he can capture that 1980's sci-fi feel, which would be perfect for Mass Effect. Also, he has shown that he respects the source material in making Tron: Legacy.

My other choice would be Jonathan Liebesman, the director of Battle: Los Angeles. I LOVED that movie. It was as if someone decided to make the perfect movie for me. Anyway, he would be a good choice because of his experience directing Battle: Los Angeles. If the Mass Effect movie is about the First Contact War, then Liebesman would do it justice.

I'm just not expecting much with how well game/movie adaptations have gone. But in order to contribute to the thread I'll say Neill Blomkamp.
