Christopher Nolan or Ridley Scott. Why? Because they are the best directors ever

^ THIS

It amazes me the credit Scott has. He made TWO great films, at the start of his career, and has been very irregular since them, IMHO he has more bad films than good ones.

I don´t want Cameron. He has to film Battle Angel Alita after Avatar is done.

Nolan could be interesting.

just give Ridley Scott another space/futuristic movie so he could die happily

The likely choices are;
1. Duncan Jones- Acclaimed up and coming sci-fi director who can work a budget and is familiar to video games. A smart, reasonable choice that both the director and studio would be happy with.
2. Neil Bloomkamp- In a similar posistion to Jones, see above. Even began development on a somewhat similar video game project, Halo.
3. Darren Aronofsky. A renowned director who is looking for a big budget opportunity, based on his previous attachment to Wolverine. The perfect blend of artistry and style, and is already well known to many for Requiem and Black Swan.

Darren Aronofsky doing an epic space opera?  My head would explode from the awesome.  I'm not sure he'd do it though, given the reason he pulled out of Wolverine...  But again, would be completely awesome.  The guy knows how to do epic, beautiful and moving all at once.

I'd be really happy with either Duncan Jones or Darren Aronofsky, to be honest - as long as they play the crap out of the trilogy first and totally geek out over the IP.  Would also love it if they could use the same technology used on Avatar (performance cap, as well as mocap).

GdT is a good choice, but I would go with Alfonso Cauron. Children of Men. Awesome.

Awesome suggestion, I hadn't even considered him. I loved his style in CofM (I'm a sucker for long takes).

Barring him, other people have already suggested my picks: Joss Whedon, Neill Blomkamp, Duncan Jones.

Arronofsky would be interesting, I would definitely see it, but he wouldn't be my choice if it were up to me. Though that would probably mean Clint Mansell would score it, which would be awesome.

Whoever it is better be good, 'cause the script is gonna suck. Either that or get Michael Bay to turn this turkey into a bona fide train wreck.

If you want it to be an epic space opera - Peter Jackson
If you want an action packed but mature film - Christopher Nolan
If you want lots of pretty 'splosions - Micheal Bay

Some people have also mentioned Ridley Scott but I feel if he directed the film might take on too dark of a tone.

Don't even joke about that. He already ruined one of my favorite series with the big steaming pile of crap that was The Last Airbender.

I know this may be extreme ,but I consider the Last Airbender to be the worst film I've ever seen, probably because the cartoon was so great in comparison. I don't know how that moron could claim to have been a fan when he managed to produce that junk.

If GdT did direct it, I would actually expect the movie to be good, rather than desperately hoping.

KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Cameron would likely butcher the political subtext that permeates ME.

Spielberg could definitely make a winner out of it, but he seems to do his best work on his own IP, or historic fiction. A lot of his licensed IP movies were less than stellar, IMO.

Zach Snyder Is a great option, IMO. If my guesses regarding the ME movie are correct, we will need someone that can bring people into the world, even if some character development suffers.

Please keep JJ Abrams and Micheal Bay away from the set. Their stuff is fun to watch, but ME is an emerging IP, and needs to make more of an impression than these guys have a habit of.

Pretty sure most people would consider that American Gangster and Black Hawk Down qualifty as "great films" as well.

He has one set to come out in less than a year, its called Prometheus.

edit:

Also, as a Firefly fanboy I am obligated to throw Joss Whedon's name into the mix here.

But please. please. PLEASE. No Shamamayalan (sp?) or Michael Bay.

I would love to see Peter Jackson make this, but in order for him to do that, production wouldn't be able to start untill 2014, which is sorta of far away. If Bioware and Legacy can't wait untill then, I'l pick Christopher Nolan.

Well to be fair, I think he said in an interview that his kids were fans of the show. So I assume that the film was all some big elaborate punishment for something bad his kids did.
