Paul Verhoeven

He did ok scifi movies ( Robocop , Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man ) and Basic Instinct and Flesh and Blood.

I believe he could do Mass Effect. He is renowned for making very violent movies but that still make sense.

Edit: Oops.. He is older than i thought.. I think he is 75 now... I wonder if he still makes movies..

I love Star Ship Troopers not only for its nudity but it's message. But Paul expertise is movies that have poltical undertones. I don't really think thats what this movie needs.

Great idea! He's a very promising director yet a newcomer at the same time so it would be realistic to get him for the project (unlike Cameron/Jackson/Spilberg names ME has absolutely no chance at attatching)

It's going to be an up-and-coming director, or a fairly established one that's not had a hit in a while.

So Duncan Jones I'd like, as he really gets that retro-future, and Zack Snyder has a track record of sticking to the source material.

DJ has his own concepts he wants to make, though ZS needs a hit after Sucker Punch did not do so well.

But they're both probably too well known for the budget, but you never know.

Lets see how Conan or Dredd turn out. Marcus Nispel and Pete Travis could fit the bill...

Edit: doubt Blomkamp would ever touch another sci-fi epic based on a videogame again, after his last experience..

Possibly. Hasn't he stated that he would still be interested in the Halo movie, though? After the short he did for Halo, I think he would be an awesome choice for a Mass Effect movie. As long as he didn't depend too much on the cinema verite style.

He was going to do a Halo movie but someone (i think it was microsoft) pulled the plug very late so he ended up doing district nine instead.

I'm not convinced this would taint him against video games though, up and coming (and even established) directors get jerked around from time to time. He would be more likely to be less inclined to work with whoever it was who pulled the plug.

Duncan Jones, as others have suggested, would be great. He wouldn't make the film all about 'splosions and ZOMG evil aliens!!!

The budget is going to be the most important factor. It's doubtful a PoP-level budget will be in the offing. Star Trek had a budget of $140m, and they still had to use a rather obvious brewery as more than one set.

How much would/should Mass Effect: The Movie cost? I think we'll be lucky to get $100m. Can it be done for that amount?

Just in terms of sets:

The Normandy
The Presidium, Citadel Tower
Ilos
Eden Prime
Virmire
Feros, Norveria, and Therum... not gonna have time for all of them anyway.

And that doesn't even include space battles, firefights, biotics, and thresher maws. Yikes.

Joss Whedon did a lot with $40-50m for Serenity, but that was with love, and a cast that was already a family (and of whom none were CGI...).

First off, I certainly hope the movie will not be about the events of the first game.  "Mass Effect: First Contact" would be awesome, though (just my opinion, others may disagree).

District 9 was done with $30 million, Serenity with 40. 100 would be great, but like you said, we'd be lucky if it got that much.  I dunno, I'm trying to stay optimistic about an ME movie.  A good director and a moderate budget go a long way.  It'll be interesting to see how everything plays out.

No chance for more than $150 million IMO.Probably in the low southern region of $100M, $110M-$130M. Could be enough depending on where will they film it.

just give Ridley Scott another space/futuristic movie so he could die happily

Congratulations, you can die happy. This is a movie that is set in the Alien universe and will have Michael Fassbender, Guy Pierce and Idris Elba in it. Need I say more? NO, of course not, don't be stupid.

Neil Blomkamp is my vote. He's comfortable with game adaptations (he was gonna do Halo before that project fell through, and also made this piece of win for Halo 3 marketing) and he does action, characters and atmosphere all very well.

wait.. wut? Jolie + Fincher > ME + movie.

Guess Ridley Scott will have to do then.
Actually, as long as it's not steven spielberg or michael bay, I'm pretty much ok with anyone.

Stanley Kubrick. ---> 2001: A Space Odyssey
One of the most boring but REALIST (something undervalued in this genre) and amazing Sci-fi ever.

But as he isnt available for obvious reasons, I choose The Wachowski Brothers who really make a good work.

If not, other director known or not who isnt influenced by Star Wars/Star Treck/Battlestar Galactica/Stargate...etc etc. It's for nothing but ME is in other level

PD: altho the movie will be dissapointing in high probability and surely I don't go to the cinema.
