Interesting. Getting a director from TV could be inspired. Michael Rymer is another one: yes, Queen of the Damned may have sucked (still a thousand times a better movie than Transformers 3) but his BSG stuff was most excellent.
Another two are Ivan Engler and Ralph Etter, who directed 'Cargo', which is a nice little movie, made with love.
I'd suggest David Twohy too, given that Pitch Black and Below are minor classics, but then the bigger budget effects heavy CoR didne work so well....

First off, I certainly hope the movie will not be about the events of the first game. "Mass Effect: First Contact" would be awesome, though (just my opinion, others may disagree).
It's going to have to be about the first game (I think they've even stated that in pre publicity for the panel at Comic Con), as that's where the IP is. Unless it was a low budget semi-indie type film, just to test the waters. But Mass Effect without husks and reapers?
I think it would be possible to craft a 150 minute movie of the first game, given a clever writer (David Hayter!), director, and producer, though it would require a lot being left out. ME2, though... Wouldn't have a clue how to wrangle that into a film (TV show, mind...).
Out of the well known directors, Duncan Jones is an obvious choice, as he obviously feels for that retro-future design ethic. But he is more auteur, so might not want to.
Gareth Edwards is another name (Monsters) worth considering. He's doing Godzilla next, so isn't afraid of working with an established property.
The big thing is, unless it isn't going to go into production for 2 or 3 years, who is available?
I think I'd prefer a director I've never heard of, given that my well known best choices all have a full schedule.
The writer is possibly a more important consideration - they're gonna have the most difficult job. Then the producer - they'll have to win the money to pay for Wrex and Garrus.
