Read a quote from Blomkamp that stated that the Halo debacle hurt so much he'd be reluctant to go back to a VG movie. Can't remember where I saw that, so take what you will.

Interesting. Getting a director from TV could be inspired. Michael Rymer is another one: yes, Queen of the Damned may have sucked (still a thousand times a better movie than Transformers 3) but his BSG stuff was most excellent.

Another two are Ivan Engler and Ralph Etter, who directed 'Cargo', which is a nice little movie, made with love.

I'd suggest David Twohy too, given that Pitch Black and Below are minor classics, but then the bigger budget effects heavy CoR didne work so well....

First off, I certainly hope the movie will not be about the events of the first game.  "Mass Effect: First Contact" would be awesome, though (just my opinion, others may disagree).

It's going to have to be about the first game (I think they've even stated that in pre publicity for the panel at Comic Con), as that's where the IP is. Unless it was a low budget semi-indie type film, just to test the waters. But Mass Effect without husks and reapers?

I think it would be possible to craft a 150 minute movie of the first game, given a clever writer (David Hayter!), director, and producer, though it would require a lot being left out. ME2, though... Wouldn't have a clue how to wrangle that into a film (TV show, mind...).

Out of the well known directors, Duncan Jones is an obvious choice, as he obviously feels for that retro-future design ethic. But he is more auteur, so might not want to.

Gareth Edwards is another name (Monsters) worth considering. He's doing Godzilla next, so isn't afraid of working with an established property.

The big thing is, unless it isn't going to go into production for 2 or 3 years, who is available?

I think I'd prefer a director I've never heard of, given that my well known best choices all have a full schedule.

The writer is possibly a more important consideration - they're gonna have the most difficult job. Then the producer - they'll have to win the money to pay for Wrex and Garrus.

Really? I hadn't heard that, that's unfortunate. But understandable.

Don't the rights to the IP cover anything that's in the ME universe? I don't think the movie necessarily has to be about the events of the game. Of course, with the history of video game movies as a guide, they may just make ME3 into a movie and simplify it into a generic alien invasion movie.

Movies now are not that good. If a movie based on ME universe were made it'd suck and probably have Megan Fox as LI. Video Games>Movies. Movies are too simplistic compared to video games.

Edit: UNLESS Christopher Nolan directs lol.

i know what you mean.  The problem is a lot of block buster summer movies are just all CGI and no soul, the performance feel really flat, where is the emotion????

Chris Nolan would do an excellent job, but I don't think it's something he would sign up to do.  unfortunately a Mass Effect film would have to heavily rely on CGI and Nolan doesn't like that.  He likes to shoot real locations and enhance with CGI if it is needed.

Maybe Ridley Scott once he's finished his new Alien prequel film.  Ridley Scott did the first Alien film and Blade Runner.  We all know Blade Runner was a big influence in the creation of Mass Effect.  Also he did Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.  I think the devs at Bioware would be pretty stoked if Ridley Scott was director or a producer for a Mass Effect film.

Yes to Ridley Scott, no to James Cameron.  I'm not a fan of Avatar, that film was emotionally 2-Dimentional.

Personally I hope that Mass Effect gets a very low budget. I think the only way that it could be a good movie is if has an $80 Mil budget, takes place before the first game, and ends with Humans first visiting the Citadel.

Act 1 (1 Hour): Discovery of the Mass Effect and its effects on Earth
Act 2 (45 minutes): First exploration past the relay, discovery of first habitable planet, and first interstellar colonization.
Act 3: (45 minutes): First Contact War, first advanced military action for humanity
Act 4: (30 minutes): First peace talks, first interactions with alien species, first visit to the Citadel.

THAT could be a masterpiece that compliments the games instead of butchering them. All characters should be people not in the games, though Grissom and maybe Saren should have roles. Then after that maybe they can get a $200 mil budget and attempt to tackle the first game.

Pretty similar to what I expect, though I don't believe it will run for 3 horus. Agree with the Turians (or any aliens for that matter) not appearing till at least 2nd half of the movie. There'll be lots about discovering the Prothean ruins, Earth's reaction etc, discovering Charon Relay, first explorations and stuff like that. Also agree on the ending with humans visiting the Citadel, something like 'Welcome (both humanity and the movie audience) to the Mass Effect world'.

Michael Bay CAN be a competent director and tell a cohesive and interesting story (The Island and The Rock showed this), it just seems sometimes that he puts a lot more effort into the explosions and special effects, awesome for a summer movie, but no good at all when the story needs real, gritting emotional impact.

So, unless he was bringing the same mindset to the table that he had for 'The Island', I'd count him out of the list...unless they needed him to direct the explosions, in which case, **** YEAH!

Agreed if he would have the same mindset as when he made "The Rock" and "The Island" I belive that a Mass Effect movie would be awesome!

Then again, there are rumours that he might be talking to Will Smith about Bad Boys 3. In which case, I want him to save all his creative energy for this masterpiecePosted Image

He can't make a movie using an existing IP for ****. I still have nightmares about Devastator's balls... *shudder*

I don't go to the movies much but District 9 still has a special place in my heart. I guess I vote Neill Blomkamp.
