So what do we think his role will be and do we think that any other big name characters from the books (ie. Gillian or Kahlee) will be appearing and what kind of roles will they be having?

One of the problems with having book characters in the game is the same problem so many people have with showing Tali's face. "That's not how I imagined Tali, the Quarians, Kahlee, Gillian, ect."
No one is going to care.

In fact, the novels read like a bad fanfic.

Me too.
Insight into the workings of the ME universe was interesting, the characters and events were just plain bad.

I don't appreciate having the Council decision made for me.

The problem I have with the books is that they make canon some of the choices from the games. Meaning that if you did not choose a choice in the game that coincides with the books it all seems a little off. I did not read the books but I heard that *Spoilers* Shep keeps the reaper base *end spoilers* among other things. Since I didn't not do these things in my game I feel like the books are not even relevant to my playthoughs. I wish the books would have stayed completely away from Sheps decisions. That being said, It would be interesting to meet some of these book characters and see how they react to MY decisions.

The only canon choice they make is that Udina is councilor.
They never mention the Collector base just that they have Collector technology. "Cerberus had salvaged key pieces of technology from the remains of the Collector operation." That could easily be salvage from the remains of the base. It's ambiguous enough to fit either choice.

No. The base decision was kept ambiguous. Only using the word "salvage" (like in LotSB)

At least Mass Effect is better than Wing Commander was, way back in the day. They were horrible with using novelizations and the like to make a particular in game decision "canon." Defeats the whole point of making a game interactive when it's not about the players decisions anymore, if you ask me.
