To be honest. I bought all the books and -TO ME- they sucked, the characters and the dialogue were the worst, I hated them all, I couldn't believe I was reading Drew Karpyshyn at all. And well, to hear that -at the very least- one of their characters would make it into ME3 (Kai Leng) made me roll my eyes.

Still, even when I'm really biased towards this decision of BioWare, I hope his role and development in the game will be significantly better than his role and development in the book. Or that he just happens to be one random cameo "sub-boss" that only the fans who has read the books or knows about them will know who he is.

If it were up to me, I'd do my best to keep all the ominous characters from the books out of ME3.

Read alot myself. But I can't for the life of me understand why people hate them. They havesome great charater expodition, with Seran in revilation, with Paul Greyson inAsension and Retribution, and with Kia Lang in Retribution.
Everyone time Seran showed up in Revilation,he controled the scene. Paul show a new veiw of Cerburus, and what happen when a person is indocrinated. And Kia Lang intensified every scene he was in.
Ofcourse one could hate it for the main characters, but they can easily be ignored, I read for the new veiw of the universe. Revilation is written like a Movie to book novel. Acension problem is it's ploting, too many things happen by chance. Retibution is a little smarter...but what I don't understand is how Sanders forget the reason why she wason the Quarian FLOTILA IN THE FIRST PLACE.<_<
The books of fine, the only problem with them is if you were looking for characterisation with the heros of the book.

Shepard (Especially FemShep) is a bigger Mary Sue than Kahlee could ever hope to be. She came back from the dead, can headbutt a Krogan and do god-knows what else. Cyborg, or not...

I liked the books as well, and I wouldn't mind seeing the charcters in ME3. They were no worse than the ones in the actual game.

It's excusable with the player character.

1. They do. I won't argue with that. They are still horrible however

2. She is soooo beautiful and blonde! Being blonde is rare now! Everyone loves her because she is so beautiful and intelligent! Oops Kahlee got kidnapped again, Anderson better go save her so he can fall in lurve.

1.Nothing they do story wise orplot wise isreally bad. Unless you can tell me
2. The blode part is not a mary sue characteristic, and being beatiful..you may define every femal in ME as a Mary sue.
Though she is being save all the time.....That just damsil in distress sindrom. And that not linked to Mary sue's only........Is Man of Arms from He-man a Mary sue.

"Looking for characterization with the heroes" has nothing to do with characters being good or not or if that makes reading a novel better to read or not.

Some characters are made so you like them and others so you don't, however, when you stumble with a set of novels like these, that develops their characters in such a poor, lame fashion, that has terrible dialogues, that tries to force a series of events in order to make all the elements to "check"... and you're a somewhat experienced reader, you dont get to like them. That's my case (I've studied literature at university and I've read a lot of stuff that is either really good or really bad).

To me, this books just didn't cut it, they didn't helped to properly enhance the feeling the games create, instead they try to emulate other things that are below the level of the narrative, characters and the dialogues ME games has; instead of feeling like the book version of a big, epic, sci fi, space opera, they feel like a bad, wannabe gritty, cheap, crime story. I couldn't stand them as a whole, they were horrible.

Anyway, that's just my take on this. Cheers

another thing i've picked up is taht if u talk to tali right after her recruitement mission and choose to investigate one of her comments you can ask her why she hates cerberus and she tells you bascially the story of cerberus attacking the idenna to recapture gillan.

this shows us that the books and the games are interrelated and do play/bounce off eachother. so its very possible the book characters can have a bigger role than anticipated

I shudder to think what some guy named Kai Leng. Sounds like a wimp....just saying...

Jokes aside, the books sucked, he was a dull character. Wish they hadnt added him, but oh well, we already know what will happen. He will try to kill us, fail, and we will kill him.....big shocker.

I did say Asencion had plot problems. What do you think the plot problems where?=](Retorical statement)
I well understand that the books are write with the intent of triggering events to move the plot, but what ever missstep Kaleen has, other characters fill the gap. And for Kaleens Character, with Revilation, it could of been anyone, the same with Anderson. Their importancein the book was what their jobs were not who they are, and in the that it specified how significat they are. The main problem of that book is that Anderson and Sanders character were so basic, they consept as action movie characters. The Hero and the Girl. Retribution does not have Asension plotting problems or Revilations movie to book feel. The only missed step Retribution has is that it's connected to Asension. Their two way you can take to the plot, Cerburus was doing "EVIL"experimants again and it went awol:pinched:
or Cerburus was doing the nessary evil to find a way to stop the reapers and their enemies came at the wrong time.<_<
The story in it self is fine, it just that the first  2 did not have the best execution for everything.

I think Kai Leng will be an important villain, for he is the right hand of TIM. I think, he will die at Shepard's hand before Shepard can face the devil himself!

I don´t have the book, so if you have, could you post some quotes from him?

It's not his quotes that are interesting. It's his actions. He's a logiacly thinking silent, dragon type. I can say the greatest thing he did in the book was take on, with just a combat knife and no armor, a squad of  heavily geared and armored Turians and killing them all on he's own. He's also a disgusting racist.

exactly... it isnt anything that he says that makes him special... he doesnt even really say much.  Its more of who he is as a person and what he thinks.  He is basically the definition of cerberus with crazy combat abilities... and i cant wait to see him in the game as long as they can bring justice to hes fighting prowess.

aside from taking on 6 armed turians with a knife and a pistol and winning.  He killed a krogan with a knife, and  escaped the ascension project without the use of his legs. just to name a few of his accomplishements

Which is why he is a boring character.

Then again, Retribution lacked any tension whatsoever to begim with.

So seeing the thoughts of someone as they loss their sense of self is not tension?

If Grayson was a likeable character.

I honestly feel nothing for any of the novel characters. They are bland and lifeless.

I agree completely. After reading Revelation Saren beame my favorite character. I really liked Grayson in Ascension and Retribution was exceptionally good for the chapters about Kai Leng and/or TIM.

EDIT

Revelation was also really good for the insight it provided into the Council and humanity's relationship with it.

The problem I have with the books is that they make canon some of the choices from the games. Meaning that if you did not choose a choice in the game that coincides with the books it all seems a little off. I did not read the books but I heard that *Spoilers* Shep keeps the reaper base *end spoilers* among other things. Since I didn't not do these things in my game I feel like the books are not even relevant to my playthoughs. I wish the books would have stayed completely away from Sheps decisions. That being said, It would be interesting to meet some of these book characters and see how they react to MY decisions.

The books AREN'T relevant to your playthrough. They shouldn't be relevant at all actually. Basically the writer could've figure out a clear way to work around the major decisions in ME1 and ME2 and just retconned the whole thing out of laziness.

What so bland about a guy who gave up his daughter out of love, who felt that everything bad thing he did was for the greater good  but so hit by greif for what he done he turn to red sand and by the time he saw that he was doing wrong to his daught he did will too much for him to forgive himself.
That's not a bland character.

Eh in response to the comments on the first page I'd say the novels vary from mediocre to pretty decent.

I wished the characters were a little better written and they could have expanded the lore and universe and realism of the universe a little more.

hopefully they all die off screen. I hated almost every novel character.

I hate EVERY novel character, and for the record, I feel like Drew did a very sub-par job with the characters in general.

Saren: Oh whoopy, a genocidal maniac just because he lost his brother.

TIM: He wants to take over the galaxy. *In M Bison voice* Of course!

Kahlee: An idiot blondie damsel in distress who has at least several characters fall in love with her just because. What does Anderson see in her?

Kai Leng: Oh great, another Saren who could have just been re-named Steven Seagal.

Grayson: Just a red sand addict with very little redeeming qualities
